Herman Sanders
COMSTOCK -- Herman R. Sanders, 85, of Comstock died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at the Jennie Melham Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Comstock. Mark Crist will officiate. Burial will be in the Kent cemetery east of Taylor.
Visitation will be prior to services at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family. Rhoad Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Edgar Slingsby
ANSLEY -- Edgar W. Slingsby, 87, of Ansley died Monday, January 8, 2001 at Jennie Melham Hospital in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Christian Church in Ansley. The Revs. Mel Shepherd and Jim Ferguson will officiate. Burial will be in the Lee Park cemetery west of Arcadia.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the First Christian Church in Ansley or to the Lee Park cemetery Fund.
Mr. Slingsby was born Jan. 5, 1914 on a farm southwest of Arcadia to William and Alma (Casteel) Slingsby. He lived most of his life on the family farm and attended country school. He took over the family farm at the age of 14 after the death of his father.
He married
Doris Mills on April 18, 1936, at Smith Center, Kan. He was a member of the First Christian Church in Ansley and was deacon and trustee at the church. He served on the District # 91 Knight rural school board and was active on the Lee Park cemetery board.
His hobbies were land and livestock. In later years, he enjoyed fishing, traveling, gardening and carpentry work.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Bernard of Grand Island and Gaylord of Ansley; three daughters, LaVonne (Mrs. Joe) McDonald of Ansley, Lorene Stahlberg of Bethlehem, Pa. and Charlotte (Mrs. Lonny) Schnacker of Kearney; one sister, Lucille (Mrs. Clinton) Leep of San Diego; 20 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Clarence and one sister, Alta Toot.
Emil Trojan
COMSTOCK -- Emil Trojan, 82, of Comstock died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at the Valley County Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Don Schauda will officiate. Burial with military graveside services will be in the Bohemian Brethren cemetery in Valley County.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
J. Clinton Whitehead
BROKEN BOW -- James Clinton Whitehead, 88, of Broken Bow died Monday, Jan. 8, 2001, at BryanLGH East Medical Center in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. Luther Casey will officiate. Burial will be in the Lone Tree cemetery at Weissert.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the Lone Tree cemetery Fund.
Mr. Whitehead was born June 14, 1912, at Mason City to James H. and Nina (Taylor) Whitehead. He graduated from Mason City High School in 1930.
He married
Mildred Govier on June 16, 1940. He served in the Army Air Force as a gun turret specialist during World War II. After his discharge, he opened a jewelry and watch repair shop in Broken Bow which he owned and operated for many years.
He was baptized in the Mason City Baptist Church and later became a member of the Church of God at Weissert. He was also a member of the VFW and the American Legion in Broken Bow. He loved to watch Cornhusker football.
Survivors include his wife, one brother, Delwin of Kearney and one sister, Janice Robertson of Loup City.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Melvin and one sister, Iola Browning.
Martin Gladem
SALINA, Kan. -- Martin D. Gladem, 77, of Salina, Kan., died Sunday, Jan. 7, 2001, at the Salina Regional Health Center.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Immanuel-Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Orlando Gunderson will officiate. Burial will be in the North Branch Cemetery.
Visitation will be before the funeral on Thursday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Ascension Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs, Colo.
Levander Funeral Home in Albion is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Gladem was born on June 19, 1923, in rural Petersburg to John H. and Mabel (Score) Gladem. He graduated from Norfolk High School and the University of Denver.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945.
He married
Irene T. Bygland on Sept. 9, 1951, at Immanuel-Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. He lived in Colorado Springs, Colo., for 46 years. He worked for Haskins and Sells early in his career and for Holly Sugar Corp. for more than 35 years. He retired as controller in 1990.
He was a charter member of Ascension Lutheran Church in Colorado Springs, a member of Sons of Norway Fjellheim Lodge 6-107, was active in Boy Scouts USA and was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.
He moved to Salina in June 2000 and lived at Presbyterian Manor. He was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, DuAnn Peterson of Salina; two sons, James D. Gladem of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and David G. Gladem of Littleton, Colo.; nine grandchildren; and one brother, Don Gladem of Houston.
Sister Mary Alice McGuire
LITTLETON, Colo. -- Sister Mary Alice McGuire, 72, of Littleton, Colo., died Saturday, Dec. 16, 2000, at the Loretto Center in Littleton.
A memorial mass will be offered at 7 p.m. Friday at the Loretto Center in Littleton.
Sister Mary Alice was cremated. Burial will be at a later date at the Loretto Motherhouse at Nerinx, Ky.
Memorials are suggested to the Loretto Foundation Development Office in Englewood, Colo.
She was born Pauline McGuire on Nov. 2, 1928, at Grand Island to Paul and Lois McGuire of Wood River. The family moved to Lexington when Pauline was young and she attended school there, graduating from Lexington High School.
She attended Loretto Heights College in Denver where she received a bachelor of arts in social studies and her master of arts in special education at Cardinal Stritch College in Milwaukee, Wis. At the time of her death, she was in the 50th year of her religious life as a Sister of Loretto.
She spent many years teaching in Colorado, Kentucky, New Mexico and Illinois working with children with special needs. She retired to Loretto Center in Littleton where she did community service at Loretto Heights College Post Office and ran the switchboard at Loretto Center. She was an avid sports fan and loved all animals.
Survivors include two sisters, Jane Earnest and Kay Bain, both of North Platte.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Robert J. McGuire.
