Edwin Petersen
Edwin M. Petersen, 77, of 915 Bauman Drive Apt. 25 died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Veterans Affairs Medical Center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Revs. Frank Hoelck and Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Maxyne Whitesell
Maxyne E. Whitesell, 79, of Grand Island died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at Bryan Memorial Hospital of Lincoln.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Immanuel Baptist Church with The Reverend J. L. Jones officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with the family receiving friends from 5 to 8 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Immanuel Baptist Church or Nebraska Childrens Home.
Mrs. Whitesell was born Feb. 8, 1920, to James E. and Martha Ann (Schuck) Hughes at Alliance. She grew up in Alliance and McCook, and graduated from Alliance High School. From 1942 until 1946 she was employed by the Alliance Air Base.
She married
Harry I. Whitesell on Aug. 16, 1946, at Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island. Mr. Whitesell died in 1997.
She was a member of the Immanuel Baptist Church where she taught Sunday school and vacation bible school, served on the church council, was part of the women on mission, started and maintained a prayer ministries and served on various church committees.
She also was involved with child Evangelism Fellowship and with Teaching Good News Clubs.
She had attended the Evangelical Free Church where she taught Sunday School for 20 years and was involved in the woman's ministries.
She was a volunteer for the American Red Cross Association and the gift shop at the Lutheran Hospital for several years.
Survivors include two daughters, Vanessa (Mrs. Randy) Adle of Grand Island, and Annetta Shotkoski of Phoenix, Ariz.; one son, Harry "Greg" G. Whitesell of Humboldt, Ariz.; three grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one stepgreat-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jim and Glenn.
Mary Bulger
ARCADIA -- Mary Caroline Bulger, 85, of Arcadia, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at the Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Mrs. Bulger was cremated. There will be no services. Burial will be in the Arcadia City Cemetery. Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Arcadia Fire and Rescue Unit.
Mrs. Bulger was born Oct. 3, 1914, at Berwyn to Harvey and Ada (Stark) Waterbury. As a child she lived in Arcadia for a short time. She spent most of her childhood in Ansley where she graduated from Ansley High School. She attended Hastings College.
On May 8, 1938, she married
William Bulger at Broken Bow. The couple first lived in Arcadia. They lived in New Jersey and later returned to Nebraska living in Lincoln, Arcadia, Loup City, Ord and Chadron. In 1951 the couple lived in Arcadia.
She operated Mary's Café in Arcadia for nine years.
Mrs. Bulger was a past member of Eastern Star and Rebekahs Lodge.
She is survived by her husband.
She was preceded in death by one son, William Harvey Bulger and one brother, Bernard Waterbury.
Walter Kramer
ALBION -- Walter H. Kramer, 81, of Albion died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.
Services are pending with Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Lillian May
PHILLIPS -- Lillian Frances May, 76, of Phillips, died Monday, Dec. 13, 1999, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Richard Karohl will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Memorials are suggested to the Faith United Methodist Church in Grand Island.
Mrs. May was born in Marquette on Sept. 21, 1923, to Stephen and Anna (Anderson) Andersen. She grew up at Marquette. She graduated from Marquette High School.
She attended Nebraska Central College in Central City. She was a schoolteacher for 5 years in the Marquette vicinity.
She married
Maynard May on July 19, 1945. They lived in Valentine, Grand Island, Denver and Pueblo, Colo. She was a church organist for 30 years at Pueblo and Grand Island.
Upon retirement, the couple lived on a farm near Phillips.
She was a member of the Faith United Methodist Church in Grand Island, Charity Circle of United Methodist Women, Christian Women's Club, T.O.P.S. of America and Happy Hour Club of Aurora.
She was a member of the Aurora Memorial Hospital Auxiliary where she delivered mail to patients. She was a longtime member of Hamilton/Merrick County A.R.C.
Survivors include her husband; one son, Marion May of Axtell; two daughters, Cheri (Mrs. Garth) Leigh of Kansas City, Mo. and Merrilee May of American Samoa; one grandson; and three sisters, Edith McConnell of Grand Island, Ethel (Mrs. Einer) Johnson of Central City and Lucille Nyblom of Aurora.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Esther Pearson and Erma Travis and one brother, Elmer Andersen.
Ray Phelps
HASTINGS -- Ray J. Phelps, 77, of Hastings died Tuesday, Dec. 14, 1999, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the First Presbyterian Church in Hastings. The Rev. Matthew Nieman will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. Visitation will continue one hour before services Friday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Ray and Vivian R. Phelps Memorial Fund.
Mr. Phelps was born on Sept. 27, 1922, near Trumbull to Raymond and Verna (O'Donnell) Phelps. He graduated from Trumbull High School in 1940. He enrolled at Hastings College for a year and then joined the U. S. Army and served in Germany. He returned to Trumbull to join the family custom harvest company in 1946.
He married
Vivian Boggs on May 10, 1946. He began farming with his brother, Ralph Phelps, in 1954 and continued farming until June 1999. Mrs. Phelps died in October 1994.
Mr. Phelps married
Marjorie Reamer on Oct. 17, 1997. They spent their winters in Mesa, Ariz.
He was a member of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; three daughters, Pamela Reichstein and Vicki (Mrs. Larry) Rouse, both of Trumbull, and Valerie (Mrs. Jim) Brt of Lincoln; four grandchildren; two stepdaughters, Connie Thompson of Rugby, N.D., and Bonnie Reamer of Madison, Wis.; two stepsons, Calvin Reamer of Oakes, N.D., and Howard Reamer of Augusta, Ga.; six step-grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his first wife; one grandson; a brother, Ralph; and a sister, Mina Turner.
