Lowell Yohn
BROKEN BOW -- Lowell B. Yohn, 85, of Broken Bow died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2000, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Don Schauda will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the Evangelical Free Church Sunday School.
Mr. Yohn was born on March 15, 1914, in the West Table community in Custer County to Clayton and Caroline (Koch) Yohn. When he was a child, the family moved to Custer Canyon. He attended Hollow Hill District 263 School through the eighth grade. He rode a horse to Ryno School for the ninth and 10th grades and graduated from high school in Broken Bow in 1931.
He received his teacher's certificate from Kearney State College. He then helped his parents with their farm work and helped other farmers. He began operating the Standard service station in Broken Bow in 1938.
He married
Lethia Bayless on Feb. 14, 1939, at Loup City. They farmed south of Ansley. They moved to Broken Bow in 1976 and sold their real estate in 1977. Mr. Yohn began battling Paget's disease in his legs in 1996 and moved to Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in March 1997.
He loved animals, especially horses, mules and cattle. In his younger years, he broke horses to ride. He enjoyed hunting, playing cards and dancing.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lynna (Mrs. Leonard) McKenney of Broken Bow and Leta (Mrs. Ron) Roth of Callaway; two grandsons; and a brother, Irvin Yohn.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Thelma and Crystal.
Gerald Gauthier
HOLDREGE -- Gerald N. Gauthier, 73, of Methodist Memorial Homes in Holdrege and formerly of Hastings died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Phelps County Hospital in Holdrege.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Michael's Catholic Church with the Rev. David F. Bourek officiating. Burial with military rites will be in Parkview cemetery in Hastings.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. today at Butler-Volland Chapel in Hastings, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the funeral home and one hour before services Saturday at the church. Rosary services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mr. Gauthier was born on May 20, 1926, in Willow County, N.D., to Lucien and Petronolene (Grant) Gauthier. He graduated from Rolla High School in Rolla, N.D. He served in the U.S. Navy from Sept. 29, 1944, to June 9, 1946. Following his discharge, he returned to Hastings.
He married
Jean Mary Roth on June 7, 1949, at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church in Hastings. They spent most of their married
life together in Hastings.
Mr. Gauthier spent most of his time working in drywall construction and was the former owner of ArtCraft Drywall Co. in Hastings.
He was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings before moving to Holdrege three years ago.
Survivors include three daughters, Mary Ann (Mrs. Leonard) Melfi of Williamsburg, Va., Kim (Mrs. Doyle) Oerter of Holdrege and Gail (Mrs. Phillip) Bailey of Jefferson, Wis.; five sons, Anthony of Grand Island, Mike of Aurora, Jeff of Loveland, Colo., Bill of Lincoln and Patrick of Providence, R.I.; 13 grandchildren; two sisters, Theresa Olson of Rochester, Minn., and Rosemary Schweitzer of Lincoln; and five brothers, Ernest and Armand, both of Hastings, Leo of Lincoln, Marlin of Omaha and Francis of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his wife; an infant daughter, Jeanette Marie; and a sister, Dorothy Sellman.
Janet McCleary
ESCONDIDO, Calif. -- Janet McCleary, 79, of Escondido, Calif., formerly of Arcadia, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2000, at Escondido.
Services are pending at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Virginia Stewart
DERBY, Kan. -- Virginia M. Stewart, 76, of Derby, Kan., formerly of Albion, died Friday, Jan. 7, 2000, at Wichita, Kan.
Graveside services were Wednesday at Boone cemetery at rural Albion. The Rev. Terry Otto officiated.
Levander Funeral Home of Albion was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Stewart was born on Dec. 29, 1923, at Albion to Raymond and Lois Maricle. The family moved to Page until 1928 and then moved back to Boone County. She attended a two-room school in Boone County until her junior year and graduated from Albion High School in 1941. She then attended the University of Nebraska until 1944. She began writing society news and selling advertising at the Albion Weekly Newspaper in 1943.
She married
Floyd Stewart on March 23, 1944, in Lincoln. They moved to Amarillo, Texas, moved back to Nebraska and eventually to Wichita.
In the 1960s, Mrs. Stewart was a preschool teacher's aide. She also was a volunteer coordinator for a community center and worked with developmentally disabled children.
In 1972, the Stewarts purchased a self-service laundry in Derby, Kan. By the early 1980s, they had purchased a dry-cleaning station in Rose Hill, which Mrs. Stewart ran. The Stewarts retired and sold their business in the mid-1980s. Mr. Stewart died in July 1991.
Mrs. Stewart supported fund-raisers for the Drum and Bugle Corps in which her son, Don, was involved. She also helped raise funds for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
She enjoyed sewing, cross-stitching and reading.
Mrs. Stewart was a member of Mount Olivet United Methodist Church and Wichita Church Women United. She also sponsored the Junior-Senior High Youth Group for a couple of years.
Survivors include a daughter, Peggy (Mrs. Rick) Wade; a son, Don Stewart; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Gordon Maricle of Albion and Scott Maricle of Hanover, Ind.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one sister, Sally Maricle.
Norbert Lanners
Norbert H. "Bert" Lanners, 96, of Grand Island died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Riverside Lodge.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Cathedral. The Rev. Jose Chavez will officiate.
There will be no visitation. Mr. Lanners' body was cremated.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Crane Meadows or Nebraska State Parks Association.
Mr. Lanners was born June 1, 1904, to John and Marie (Dominick) Lanners at LeMars, Iowa. He grew up and received his education in the Catholic School system in LeMars and later moved to Chicago, Ill.
He entered the U.S. Army on Aug. 4, 1943, serving during World War II in China, Burma and India Theater and received his discharge on Oct. 29, 1945.
He married
Ilene Peterson on Aug. 19, 1946, at Hastings, after which they lived in Grand Island, where he worked for Lever Bros. Soap Company, out of Chicago, Ill. He began working for Greenbergers shortly after that and worked their for more than 30 years, retiring in 1966. Mrs. Lanners died in 1995 and he continued to live in Grand Island.
He was a master bass fisherman winning many awards and he enjoyed metal detecting. He took many Grand Island men fishing when they were in their youth.
He was a member of the VFW and the American Legion Club.
Survivors include one nephew, John Isaksen of Grand Island.
In addition to his wife he was preceded in death by a sister and three brothers.
