Leonard Whitten
ELWOOD -- Leonard J. Whitten, 72, of Elwood, died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000 at his summer home on Johnson Lake near Elwood.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 29 at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Superior. The Rev. Harold Backus will officiate. Burial will be in the Guide Rock cemetery in Guide Rock.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursday at the Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the Johnson Lake EMTs. Williams Funeral Home in Superior is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Whitten was born Aug. 3, 1928 in Phillipsburg, Kan. to Joy Joseph and Helen (Matteson) Whitten. He moved with his parents through most of his childhood, and graduated from Eckley High School near Guide Rock in 1946.
He married
Ruth Wehrly on June 27, 1947 at Belleville, Kan. The couple farmed north of Guide Rock until 1973 when they moved to Lexington where he was employed at Husky Harvester and later at Sperry New Holland. He retired in 1989 and had a home at Johnson Lake near Elwood.
He enjoyed fishing, camping, traveling, woodworking, mechanics and cardplaying.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Darlene (Mrs. Sam) Hays of Superior, and Linda Thagard of Superior; one son, Lonnie Whitten of Lebanon, Kan.; mother Helen Whitten of Hastings; one sister, Irene Colfack of Grand Island; two brothers, Dewain Whitten of Denver, Colo. and Gordon Whitten of Hastings; eleven grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Dennis.
Eddith Burdick
DENVER, Colo. -- Eddith Burdick, 91, of Denver, Colo., died Sept. 11, 2000, at Denver.
Mrs. Burdick's body was cremated. Burial was at the Olsen Family Plot at Albaton cemetery at Sloan, Iowa.
The Horan and McConaty Funeral Home of Denver was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Burdick was born Dec. 26, 1908, at Whiting, Iowa.
She married
Roger Burdick on July 6, 1955. They were divorced in October 1979. She had worked as an accountant and bookkeeper.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Denver.
Survivors include one sister, E. Corrinne Patrick of Denver.
She was preceded in death by her twin sister, Edith M. DeLashmutt of Onawa, Iowa.
Olive Mahlen
WATERTOWN, S.D. -- Olive S. Mahlen, 85, of Watertown, S.D., died Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2000, in a local care center.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the Grace Lutheran church chapel in Watertown, S.D. The Rev. Bill Hamill will officiate. Burial will be in the Fron Lutheran cemetery at Roslyn, S.D.
Visitation will be one hour prior to services on Friday at the church.
The Wight and Fox Funeral Chapel Inc. of Watertown, S.D., is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Mahlen was born Oct. 6, 1914, in Pierpont, S.D. to August and Clara (Miklebost) Anderson. She attended school in Pierpont and graduated from Pierpont High School in 1932. After her graduation she worked in the school library on book binding and repair of library books as well as taking classes at night offered in typing and shorthand by the program the government offered during the depression years of 1932 and 1933.
On Sept. 3, 1936, she married
Ernest E. Mahlen in Minneapolis, Minn. In 1957, the couple moved to Webster, S.D. and Mrs. Mahlen worked at the Day County Hospital Office and was chosen by the Board of Doctors to be Medical Records Librarian clerk of Insurance and Medicare.
They moved to Watertown in 1967, and Mrs. Mahlen was hired by memorial Hospital as admissions clerk in the office. Later she joined Fedt Clinic as office manager and insurance clerk for several years. Mr. Mahlen died on April 30, 1989.
She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church Altar Guild and Church Circle.
Survivors include three daughters, Jean (Mrs. Roger) Nygaard of Grand Island, Arlene (Mrs. Bob) Helwig of Redwood Falls, Minn. and Marilyn (Mrs. Kerry) Stevens of Mahtomedi, Minn.; two sons, Jerald Mahlen of Leesville, La. and Lee Mahlen of Sioux Falls; one sister, Jean Doll of Howard Lake, Min.; six grandchildren; three step grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and 10 step great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by 11 brothers and sisters.
Helen Powell
LOS ANGELES, Calif. -- Helen Powell, 85, of Los Angeles, formerly of Grand island, died Monday, Sept. 25, 2000, at Los Angeles.
Private family burial services will be at Englewood Park cemetery in California. Memorial services will be at the First Methodist Church in Santa Monica, Calif.
Memorials are suggested to the American Red Cross Disaster Service or the church.
Mrs. Powell was born Aug. 31, 1915, in York to John and Fernlea (Phillips) Wilson.
She graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1933.
She married
Floyd W. Powell on July 12, 1936, at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island. They moved to California in 1940.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd; one son, Bruce; one daughter, Diann; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Marjorie (Mrs. Lyle) Batie of Grand Island.
Martha Frame
Martha R. Frame, 90, of the Tiffany Square Nursing Center in Grand Island, formerly of Colorado Springs, Colo., died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at Tiffany Square.
There will be no funeral service. Mrs. Frame was cremated. The All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Frame was born Sept. 22, 1909, at Fairview, Ill., to Lester and Jessie (Hudson) Davis. The family lived in Canton, Ill., until she was 7. She then moved to Colorado Springs, Colo., with her mother and sister.
She married
Fred Williamson in 1935 in Pueblo, Colo. They lived in Colorado Springs, Colo. Mr. Williamson died in 1950 and, in 1959, she married
Jess Frame, who died in 1983.
Mrs. Frame was employed at various law firms as a legal secretary. She also owned and operated apartment buildings.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church and enjoyed reading and doing crossword puzzles.
Survivors include numerous nieces and nephews, including Don Shaver of Grand Island; seven great nephews, four great nieces; and many great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husbands and one sister, Mary Shaver, who died in 1981.
John Whyte
John T. Whyte Jr., 73, of Grand Island died Saturday, June 10, 2000, at the Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with a 7 p.m. rosary and wake at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the American Diabetes Association, the American Heart Association, or the YMCA "Y" Heart Program.
Mr. Whyte was born Sept. 21, 1926, at Grand Island to John and Mary Ann (McCullow) Whyte Sr. He received his education in Grand Island and graduated from St. Mary's High School.
He married
Rosie M. Kiolbasa on May 2, 1950, in Grand Island. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad for over 40 years.
His enjoyed photography, yard work and visiting with friends and neighbors.
Mr. Whyte was a member of the Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the Knights of Columbus and the Eagles, and he was active in the YMCA's "Y" heart program.
Survivors include a son, Tom Whyte of North Platte; three daughters, Mary Kay Hescock of Grand Island, Deborah Jess of Tobias and Margaret "Midge" Pollock of Fairbury; two sisters, Ellen Cain of Washington and Sheila Paro of Plattsmouth; 10 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife in October 1999; a son, Michael Whyte; five brothers, Francis, Charles, John Henry, James and Alfred; and three sisters, Kathleen Koehler, Maureen Cain and Eileen Whyte.
