Betty VanWinkle
KEARNEY -- Betty L. VanWinkle, 59, of rural Kearney, died Friday, April 20, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Faith United Methodist Church in Kearney. The Rev. Bob Neben will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Monday in the Silver Creek cemetery in Silver Creek.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the O'Brien-Straatmann-Apfel Funeral Home in Kearney and one hour prior to service time at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Lied Transplant Center.
Mrs. VanWinkle was born Jan. 13, 1942, at Silver Creek to Clinton and Opal (Shepard) Colby. She grew up at Silver Creek and graduated from Silver Creek High School in 1960. After graduation she worked at the Farmer's Union Station at Clarks.
She married
Dennis VanWinkle at Silver Creek on June 1, 1963. They lived at Hordville and in Chappell for 23 years before moving to Kearney in 1998. She worked for Western Drug while living in Chappell.
She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Chappell, Precter Alpha Gamma Sorority in Chappell, and was a past member of the Eastern Star in Silver Creek.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Todd of Ravenna, Jeffrey of Cresco, Iowa, and Darren of Grand Island; one sister, Carolee (Mrs. Edsel) Matousek of Clarks; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Clifford Boehnke
Clifford R. Boehnke, 85, of Grand Island, died Aug. 2, 2000, at Wedgewood Care Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Robert Harms will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in the New Lutheran cemetery in Norfolk.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday with the family receiving friends from 4 to 5:30 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to Trinity Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran School.
Mr. Boehnke was born June 7, 1915, at Norfolk to John and Lydia (Peter) Boehnke. He grew up and received his education at Norfolk, graduating from Norfolk High School in 1934.
He married
Irene Eggen on Aug. 25, 1940, at Christ Lutheran Church in Norfolk. The couple lived in Norfolk, where Mr. Boehnke worked as a linotype operator for the Norfolk Daily News from 1934 to 1945. In 1945, the couple moved to Grand Island where he joined the staff of the Grand Island Independent. He was a linotype operator for the Independent, where he worked until his retirement in 1980.
He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church where he served on the board of elders, board of education, board of trustees, and the board of stewards.
He was instrumental in the production of the first copy of Trinity Topics, a monthly bulletin from Trinity Lutheran Church to all members of the congregation. He was on the church counting board for 15 years and a volunteer at the Lutheran church service on Friday afternoons at the Nebraska Veterans Home. He played American Legion baseball in Norfolk, and he started the Boy Scout troop at Trinity Lutheran School in Grand Island which he led for many years.
He enjoyed woodworking, bowling, golfing, fishing and card playing.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Linda (Mrs. Charles) Brockmann of Paullina, Iowa, and Ellyn (Mrs. W. James) Dillon of Canton, Ohio; one son, Charles Boehnke of Waterloo, N.Y.; seven grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and one sister, Helen Van Landingham of Lincoln.
Dorothy Molczyk
Dorothy Elizabeth (Wendt) Molczyk, 66, of Grand Island died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center, after a long bout with cancer.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Klein funeral home is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church with a 7 p.m. rosary, followed by further visitation.
Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Among her survivors is her husband George.
'Kay' Riggle
L. Catherine "Kay" Riggle, 82, of Grand Island died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Mae Scranton
CENTRAL CITY -- Mae L. Scranton, 93, of Central City, formerly of St. Paul, died July 25, 2000, at the Integrated Health Services Nursing Home in Central City.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Scott Shimmin
DANNEBROG -- Scott J. Shimmin, 36, of Dannebrog died Tuesday, Aug. 1, 2000, in a roofing accident in Fairbury.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Family Center in Dannebrog. The Rev. Barry Arndt will officiate. Burial will be at the Oakridge cemetery in Dannebrog. Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday with a prayer service from 7 to 8 p.m. at the First Baptist Family Center.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Survivors include his wife, Lori of Dannebrog; two daughters, Pamela and Bethany at home; one son, Timothy at home; his parents, Allen and Jean Shimmin of Tryon; two sisters, Connie (Mrs. Mike) Hernandez of Spring Hill, Kan., and Sally Dorrough of St. Francis, Kan.; and two brothers, Douglas of North Platte and Michael of Tryon.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jerry Tidyman.
Howard Minick
STREATOR, Ill. -- Howard H. Minick, 74, of Streator, Ill., formerly of Grand Island, died July 28, 2000, at Camelot Terrace in Streator.
Services were Tuesday at Immaculate Conception Church. The Rev. Deo Gratias Mutefunya officiated. Burial was in Riverview cemetery with military rites by Streator Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 217 and Streator Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492.
Solon and Baker Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Foundation.
Mr. Minick was born June 12, 1926, in Streator to Harry L. and Barbara W. (Schmitt) Minick.
He married
Alice M. Beishline in 1946. She died June 25, 1966.
He later married
Eleanor M. Metzgar on April 29, 1983.
He served in the United States Army Air Force as a sergeant in the 355th Fighter Group during World War II. He served in the U.S. Reserves for one year prior and three years after his service in World War II.
He retired from Flink Co. in 1991. He had previously worked for Cessna Aircraft in Wichita, Kan., for 23 years, returning to Streator in 1982.
He was a member of Immaculate Conception Church, a life member and past commander for the Illinois Disabled American Veterans Chapter 96, a life member and past commander for the Illinois AMVETS Post 120, a life member , past quartermaster, post commander and past advocate for Streator Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1492, a life member of the Forty & Eight Local 0378, served as junior and senior La Salle County Council Commander, a life member of Streator Leslie G. Woods American Legion Post 1492; served as co-chairman of the Streator Korean Veterans Memorial Committee, served as trustee of the Veterans Plaza Committee of Streator, served as a delegate to La Salle County Veterans Assistance Commission, a life member of the Loyal Order of Ruptured Ducks, a member of Concerned Veterans of La Salle County, a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars National Home in Eaton Rapids, Mich.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Thomas Minick of Streator; a daughter, Barbara (Mrs. Michael) Paulick of Grand Island; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and a sister, Dorothy (Mrs. Edgar) Overtion of Oviedo, Fla.
In addition to his first wife, he was preceded in death by a son, John C. Minick; and a daughter, Nancy Kay Minick.
