Mary Owens
ORD -- Mary Ann Owens, 69, of Ord died Sunday, April 8, 2001, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City with the Rev. Reginald A. Urban officiating. Burial will be in the Arcadia City cemetery in Arcadia.
Visitation is planned from 2 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City and from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church. A vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Owens was born April 5, 1932, at Loup City to Anton and Sophia (Rewolinski) Lewandowski. She attended grade school at District 59 School and St. Josaphat's parochial school and graduated from Loup City High School in 1950.
On Sept. 29, 1951, she married
Raymond "Bud" Owens at Loup City. The couple farmed in Arcadia. In 1962, they moved into Arcadia. Mrs. Owens entered Valley County Nursing Home in Ord in July 1985.
She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Altar Society in Arcadia, St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City and the American Legion Auxiliary in Arcadia.
She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, polka music and dancing.
Survivors include her husband; five sons, Richard "Dick" of Albion, Myron "Mike" of Lincoln, Mark of Hastings, Dwain of Columbus and Shawn of Arcadia; five daughters, Paula Johnson of Arcadia, Janelle Masters of Hastings, Julie Gudesen of Ord, Patricia "Patti" Buttell of Hastings and Mary Young of Columbus; two brothers, Fred Lewandowski of Ansley and Dale Lewandowski of Loup City; four sisters, Donette Holcomb of Arcadia, Marge Larimer of Billings, Mont., Harriet Polski of Omaha and Esther Kaminski of Omaha; 24 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; five step-grandchildren; and four stepgreat-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one infant son, Joseph; one son, Alan; one brother, Carl Lewandowski; and two sisters, Evelyn Janulewicz and Rozella Silver.
Julia Peterson
YORK -- Julia Peterson, 89, of York, formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, April 9, 2001, at Hearthstone Nursing Care Center of York.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island with the Rev. Cheryl Lamb officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation is from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday with family receiving friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Great Plains Chapter of the American Red Cross in Grand Island, First Presbyterian Church or Association for Retarded Citizens.
Mrs. Peterson was born June 7, 1911, at Broken Bow to George and Ida (Foster) Porter. She attended Broken Bow schools, graduating from Broken Bow High School in 1929. She attended Hastings College and the University of Colorado in Boulder. She later taught kindergarten at Mason City.
She married
Irwin B. Peterson on May 31, 1936, at Broken Bow. The couple lived in Broken Bow. They moved to Grand Island in 1948, where she was a community and civic leader, including the teen coordinator at the Grand Island YWCA and the Hall County American Red Cross director from 1964 to 1979.
She retired in 1979. Mr. Peterson died in 1989. She continued to live in Grand Island until 1994, when she moved to York to be near her daughter.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. She was past executive director of Hall County chapter of the American Red Cross, Central Nebraska Association for Retarded Citizens, Mayor's Committee on the Handicapped and Grand Island Council of International Visitors. She was also a past member of Grand Island Business and Professional Women and Chapter EZ of PEO. She was involved with Citizen Advocacy on the state and local levels. She worked for retarded citizens and received civic recognition.
She enjoyed her family's accomplishments, being a poetic reader and singing.
Survivors include one daughter, Margaret Brink of York; three sons, Jon of Lincoln, Neil of Bloomington, Minn. and Richard of Hastings; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ramona (Mrs. William) Ptacek of Green Valley, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband; four sisters, Adelaide Betz, Roxie Pennington, Helen Williams and Doras Rupert; and five brothers, Alfred, Kenneth, Dwight, Harve and George Porter.
Delmar Rieken
DERBY, Kan. -- Delmar L. Rieken, 63, of Derby, Kan., died Monday, April 9, 2001.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Friday at Resthaven Mortuary Chapel in Wichita, Kan.
Resthaven Mortuary of Wichita is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Rieken was retired and formerly employed as master sergeant for the United States Air Force.
Survivors include his wife, Marilyn Rieken of Derby; one son, Roger of Dallas, Texas; one daughter, Cindy Silver of Wichita, Kan.; four grandchildren; one brother, James Rieken of Grand Island; and three sisters, Phyllis Fuller of Lincoln, Nylotis Brocker of Grand Island and Ardith Engle of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Dorothy Lemke
PAPILLION -- Dorothy M. Lemke, 73, of Papillion died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Midlands Hospital in Papillion.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Columbkille Church in Papillion with the Rev. Steven Stillmunks officiating. Burial will be in the Calvary cemetery in Omaha.
Visitation is from 1 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kahler-Dolce Mortuary in Papillion.
Memorials are suggested to American Diabetes Association, St. Columbkille Church or donor's choice.
Mrs. Lemke was born to Phillip and Frances (Carroll) Koenig and married
Louis Lemke Sr. She was an agent's secretary for an insurance company.
Survivors include her husband one son, Louis Jr., of St. Paul; two daughters, Shirlene Hansen of Omaha and Barbara (Mrs. Franklin) Peters of Papillion; seven grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.
Richard Martin
MASON CITY -- Richard S. Martin, 90, of Mason City, died Thursday, April 5, 2001, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Mason City. The Revs. Victor Crawford and John Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in the Mason City Cemetery.
Visitation is from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brother Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Mason City.
Mr. Martin was born on April 18, 1910, near Mason City to Charles W. and Myrtle (Somerville) Martin. He graduated from high school in 1929 at Craig, Colo.
He married
Lucia Plantz on June 7, 1937, at Cheyenne, Wyo. They lived in Mason City, where they farmed and ranched.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Mason City and served on the board of trustees. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, the National Guard, the Mason City Township Board, the Mason City Service Club, the Round Grove school board and was a former Custer County assessor. He also lobbied in Lincoln for the Farm Bureau.
He enjoyed square dancing and was an avid artist.
Survivors include his wife and two sons, Charles M. Martin of Martinez, Calif., and Hugh A. Martin of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by one brother and one son, Lucian.
