Otto Petersen
LOUP CITY -- Otto F. Petersen, 96, of Loup City died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.
Private services will be at a later date in Evergreen cemetery in Loup City.
There will be no visitation. Mr. Petersen was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church in Loup City.
Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Petersen was born on Nov. 9, 1904, at Loup City to Otto F. and Amelia F. (Hansen) Petersen. He was educated at Loup City Public School and graduated from Loup City High School in 1922. He also graduated from Grand Island Business College.
He worked for the Mason City Banking Co. In 1926, he moved to Monrovia, Calif., where he worked at Security First National Bank for seven and a half years and continued receiving his education.
He married
Mary L. Larson on June 15, 1929, at Riverside, Calif. In 1934, they moved to Loup City, where they farmed for 38 years and maintained the Petersen Airstrip, used by other airplanes and their own for 20 years. Mrs. Petersen died in 1996. Mr. Petersen continued to live in his home until moving to the Rose Lane Home three days before his death.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church, Masonic Foothill Lodge 308 of Monrovia and Oriental Chapter 78 of the Order of the Eastern Star of Loup City, which he served as worthy patron for several years. He also served on the Soil Conservation Board, District 13 school board and the township board.
He enjoyed flying airplanes.
Survivors include one daughter, Judith P. Holland of LaVista; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Chris and Clarence Petersen.
'Lucille' Robinson
KENESAW -- Ida "Lucille" Robinson, 89, of Kenesaw, formerly of Prosser, died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, at the Haven Home in Kenesaw.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Brand-Wilson Chapel in Hastings. Burial will be in Rosedale Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m., with family present from 6 to 8 p.m., Sunday and from 8 a.m. until service time Monday at the chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association.
Mrs. Robinson was born on Nov. 19, 1911, in Giltner to Clyde D. and Ida Edna (Gannon) Hafer. She attended country District 10 School and graduated from Doniphan High School. She worked at Union 76 in Alda for several years.
She married
Hazel G. Robinson on April 5, 1942, in Grand Island. They farmed in the Prosser area until 1980. They moved to Doniphan, where they lived until she moved to the Haven Home in Kenesaw in October 1996.
She was a member of the Doniphan Senior Center.
Survivors include her husband, of Hastings; one son, Bart Robinson of Prosser; and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Glen.
Neal Hunt
ALBION -- Neal R. Hunt, 75, of Albion died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Albion. The Rev. Terry Otto will officiate. Burial will be in the Rose Hill cemetery in Albion.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Zachary Smolik
LINCOLN -- Zachary A.T. Smolik, 7 weeks old, of Lincoln died Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2001, in Lincoln.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Lincoln Memorial Funeral Home. Burial will be in Lincoln Memorial Park.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to service time Saturday at the funeral home.
Zachary was born on Dec. 18, 2000, in Lincoln to Thomas and Gina (Christensen) Smolik.
Survivors include his parents; three sisters, Courtney, Megan and Shania Smolik, all of Lincoln; grandparents, Dennis and Sonnia Christensen of Seward, Robert and Yvette Smolik of Burwell and Shari Cleary of Lincoln; and great-grandparents, Iven and Anne May of Lincoln.
Joseph Schmitz
WHEATLAND, Mo. -- Joseph V. Schmitz, 78, of Wheatland, Mo., formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, Feb. 8, 2001, at Cox South Medical Center in Springfield, Mo.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Grand Island. The Rev. Tom Ryan will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Hathaway & Peterman Funeral Home in Wheatland, Mo. There will be memorial services at 1 p.m. Saturday at St. Bernadette Catholic Church in Hermitage, Mo.
There will be on visitation in Grand Island.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Central Catholic Development Foundation.
Mr. Schmitz was born March 10, 1922, at St. Joseph, Mo., to Frank J. and Alice E. (Brahman) Schmitz. He grew up and attended school in Kansas City, Mo., graduating from DeLaSalle High School in 1940. He served in the U.S. Navy from August 1942 until December 1945.
He married
Consuella "Connie" Farrenkopf on July 31, 1944, at Kansas City. They moved to Grand Island 1947. Mr. Schmitz worked as a meteorologist for the U.S. Weather Bureau until his retirement in 1977. They moved to Wheatland, Mo., in 1991.
He was a member of the VFW Post #9638 in Galmey, Mo., the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Chapter 1980 and a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus.
Survivors include his wife; five sons, Joseph II of San Luis Obispo, Calif., Matthew of Hastings, Michael of Overland Park, Kan., Peter of Traverse City, Mich. and Anthony of LaCrosse, Kan.; seven daughters, Barbara (Mrs. John) Roessig of Greeley, Colo., Judith (Mrs. Dennis) Schell of Sterling, Alaska, Teresa (Mrs. Don) Grint of Lenexa, Kan., Catherine Schmitz of Kaysville, Utah, Loretta Schmitz of Hastings, Diane (Mrs. Patrick) Fischer of St. Genevieve, Mo., and Cynthia (Mrs. John) Morris of Grand Island; 22 grandchildren; two brothers, Bernard of Colorado and Robert of Kansas City; and four sisters, Mary Catherine Foster and Elizabeth Ann Stewart, both of Kansas City, Dorothy Pogorzelski of St. Louis and Margaret Strobl of Stockton, Mo.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Patricia Peterson and one brother, Frank Jr.
Arnold Tomanchak
TAYLOR, Texas -- Arnold Tomanchak, 83, of Taylor, Texas, formerly of Gering, died Friday, Feb. 9, 2001, at a local hospital.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at Providence Funeral Home in Taylor. The Rev. Martin Doering will officiate. Burial will be in the Taylor City Cemetery.
Mr. Tomanchak was born on Sept. 5, 1917, in Taylor to John and Teresa (Stiba) Tomanchak. He was educated in Taylor, Texas.
He farmed with his parents in the Taylor area until 1942, when he joined the armed forces. He served in the 96th QMC Bakery Battalion until his honorable discharge on Jan. 10, 1946. Staff Sgt. Tomanchak returned to Texas for a short stay before moving to Gering.
He was a route salesman for Cudahy Packing Co. for 15 years before going into federal meat inspection until his retirement in January 1983. He moved back to Taylor in May 2000.
Survivors include a sister, Vlasta Vordenbaum of San Antonio.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Albert Tomanchak; and a sister, Evelyn Brieger.
