Esther Cler, 73, of Grand Island, died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001 at the Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Lindsay Gillespie
Lindsay Mae Gillespie, 9, of Grand Island, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at Children's Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church. The Rev. Martin Schmidt will officiate. There will be a family prayer service at 1:15 p.m. at the church. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Lindsay was born on Sept. 18, 1991, at Grand Island to John III and Cynthia (Quandt) Gillespie. She was a third-grader at Dodge Elementary School.
She was loved so much by her family and friends, and was a special little girl.
Survivors include her parents of Grand Island; one sister, Brittany Marie Gillespie at home; her maternal grandmother, Dianne Quandt of Grand Island; and her paternal grandparents, Jack and Alyce Gillespie of Mesa, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Albert Quandt.
Bertice Powell
Bertice I. Powell, 86, of Grand Island formerly of Longmont, Colo., died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Ahlberg Funeral Chapel in Longmont, Colo. The Rev. Ronnie Brumley will officiate. Burial will be in the Longmont Mountain View Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral chapel.
Mrs. Powell was born on June 7, 1914, at Coffeyville, Kan., to Samuel and Mabel (Holstine) Gibson. She graduated from Pittsburg College and worked as a primary school teacher.
She married
Kenneth J. Powell on June 25, 1938, in Pittsburg, Kan. The couple lived in Liberal, Kan., and then moved to Longmont, Colo., in 1977.
Mr. Powell died on Jan. 5, 1991. Mrs. Powell then moved to Grand Island in 1994.
She was a member of the New Creation World Outreach Church of Longmont, Colo., the Methodist Church women's circle, the hospital auxiliary and the Aurora Club, all in Liberal, Kan.
She was the head of the primary Sunday school department and a Sunday school teacher for the Methodist Church in Liberal, Kan. She was also a girl scout leader and was involved with all her children's activities.
Survivors include three daughters, Bertie Lou Madden of Longmont, Colo., Connie (Mrs. Gary) Mehl of Grand Island, and Debbie (Mrs. Tom) Johnson of Coweta, Okla.; seven grandchildren, and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a grandson.
Larry Schager
Larry D. Schager, 63, of Grand Island, died Saturday, Feb. 24, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Service will be at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Private graveside services will be held Tuesday at the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or the Salvation Army.
Mr. Schager was born on April 24, 1937, in Hartington to Henry and Eunice (Elliot) Schager. The family moved to Grand Island when he was 10 years old. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1955 and attended Kearney State College.
He married
Margo Webster on Dec. 26, 1959, in Grand Island. He then went to work with his father at Grand Island Abstract.
He was past president of the Cosmopolitan Club, and was the past president of the Nebraska Land Title Association. He was also appointed to the abstracters board of examiners by Gov. Exon.
Mr. Schager was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, the Wood River Country Club, Riverside Golf Club, the Cosmopolitan Club, American Legion, Platt-Duetsche, and the Eagles Club.
Survivors include his wife of Grand Island; one son, Hal Schager of Grand Island; one daughter, Marnie Sundermeier of Grand Island; one grandson; one brother, Loren Schager of Redding, Calif.; and two sisters Jean Ciccione of River Grove, Ill., and Juna Schaffer of Lincoln.
Walter Schinkel
Walter E. Schinkel, 85, of Grand Island, died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at the St. Francis Memorial Health Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Peace Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. William Voelker will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to Peace Lutheran Church, the Lutheran Hour or to the Kidney Foundation.
Mr. Schinkel was born April 3, 1915, at Ravenna to Edward and Minnie (Pape) Schinkel. He graduated from Rockville High School and then helped his father farm.
He married
Eleanor Ninke on Feb. 14, 1939, at Hayestown. The couple farmed in Ravenna and Rockville until 1954 when they moved to a farm east of Grand Island. They later moved into Grand Island where Mr. Schinkel worked at Norden Laboratories until 1964. He then worked for Swift & Company until his retirement in 1979. He and his wife also co-owned and operated the Party & Bridal Boutique from 1977 to 1996.
Mr. Schinkel was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church from 1954 to 1976 when he and his wife became charter members of Peace Lutheran Church. He was a past member of the Joy Club at the church.
He enjoyed gardening, sports and reading.
Survivors include his wife of Grand Island; five daughters, Arlene (Mrs. Darr) Dockhorn, Diane Plummer, Debra Schinkel and Lois Niemoth, all of Grand Island, Norma Dugan of Omaha; 21 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one brother, Leo Schinkel of Grand Island; and one sister Jeanette Carstens of Rockville.
He was preceded in death by one son, Eric; two brothers Bernard and Edwin; and one sister, Leata.
Max Cruikshank
ARCADIA -- Max Cruikshank, 87, of Arcadia died Thursday, Feb. 22, 2001, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Arcadia United Methodist Church. The Rev. Paixao Baptista will officiate. Burial will be in the Arcadia City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Valley County Nursing Home or the Arcadia United Methodist Church.
Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Cruikshank was born Nov. 10, 1913, to Grant and Bessie (Rhodes) Cruikshank on the family farm which was homesteaded by his grandfather James Cruikshank. He attended school at the Old Yale School District No. 34 and graduated from Arcadia High School. By the age of 10, he had become interested in purebred Hampshire hogs and entered into 4-H Club work. He later served several years as a leader and many years he showed purebred Hampshire hogs on a State Fair Circuit in the United States.
He married
Blanche Dorsey on July 31, 1941, at Kahoka, Mo. At that time, he was working for Ryan Stock Farms at Delta, Ohio. They lived there for two years before moving to Wauseon, Ohio, where their two children were born. In 1947, they moved back to Arcadia to help his parents move from their farm into Arcadia. The couple then farmed east of Arcadia in Valley County and celebrated along with their family the 100-year anniversary of the Cruikshank family farm in 1985.
He had been a 4-H leader and had served on the Valley County Weed Board. In 1958, he founded All Alumni Association for Arcadia High. He was a member of the Arcadia Congregational Church. He enjoyed fishing, boating and camping.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Max W. Cruikshank II of Arcadia; a daughter, Jan (Mrs. Bob) Goodsell of Unicoi, Tenn.; a sister, Helen Shawe of Lakewood, Colo.; four grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Thelma Russell.
