Christian Sorensen
Christian L. Sorensen, 86, of 3111 College St. No. 15 died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at Tiffany Square Care Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Nysted Evangelical Church. The Revs. Donald Voorhees and Douglas Stensby will officiate. Burial will be in the Nysted Cemetery.
Jacobsen Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to Messiah Lutheran Church in Grand Island or the Nysted Evangelical Church.
Mr. Sorensen married
Mildred Bridges Irvine on Feb. 9, 1968, at Alma, Kan. The couple lived south of St. Paul.
Survivors include his wife; and two stepsons, Larry Irvine of St. Paul and Marvin Irvine of Grand Island; several step-grandchildren; and several stepgreat-grandchildren.
Judy Harris-Nielsen
OMAHA -- Judy Harris-Nielsen, 56, of Omaha, formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday, March 15, 2000, at her home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Michael Helwig will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Harris-Nielsen was born on Aug. 31, 1943, in Climax, Colo., to Marvin F. Sr. and Hazel (Judy) Keller. She lived in Colorado until age 5, when she moved to Grand Island. She moved to Hastings at age 18 and graduated from Hastings High School in 1961.
She lived in Hastings and Grand Island for 16 years and then moved to South Carolina, where she owned and operated a cleaning business. She returned to Nebraska in 1996.
She married
Jim Nielsen on May 6, 1997, at Hastings. They lived in Aurora and Central City before moving to Omaha, where she worked for J.B. Janitorial.
Survivors include her husband; one daughter, Shelley Thomsen of South Carolina; four stepchildren, Debbie Ghito of Jacksonville, Fla., Laurie Hester of Champaign, Ill., and Jackie and Jamie Nielsen, both of Salt Lake City; one grandson; two step-grandchildren; her stepmother, Myrtle Keller of Grand Island; one sister, Lori Klatt of Decatur; one brother, Marvin Keller Jr. of Grand Island; one half sister, Beverly Sheffield of Sioux Falls, S.D.; one stepsister, Shirley Sorensen of Grand Island; and two stepbrothers, Donald Holmes of Grand Island and Bob Holmes of Kearney.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.
Doris Thomas
TABOR, Iowa -- Doris Gwendolyn Thomas, 82, of Tabor, Iowa, formerly of North Loup, died Thursday, March 16, 2000, at the Tabor Manor.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the North Loup United Methodist Church. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside cemetery at North Loup.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the North Loup United Methodist Church or the North Loup Library.
Mrs. Thomas was born on Oct. 7, 1917, at Scotia to Paul and Gladys (Jenkins) Maddox. She grew up at rural Scotia and was educated in Scotia schools. She attended Kearney State Teachers College during the summer of 1936. She taught country school from 1935 to 1937 south of Scotia.
She married
Vernon M. Thomas on Sept. 15, 1937, at Benkleman. Mrs. Thomas became a farm wife northeast of North Loup. They moved to a farm by the North Loup River in 1944. She worked as a part-time secretary.
The couple moved in 1977 from the farm to a new home they had built in North Loup. After Mr. Thomas died, Mrs. Thomas continued to live in North Loup. Mrs. Thomas was the North Loup librarian from 1980 to 1993, when back problems forced her to move to the Tabor Manor in Tabor, Iowa.
She was a member of the Fortnightly Club, BPW and United Methodist Church. She was a charter member of the Ord Hospital Auxiliary and Duo Decum Card Club. She served on the Low-rent Housing Board, was a church trustee and helped organize Popcorn Days. She enjoyed reading and music.
Survivors include one son, Victor R. of Boulder City, Nev.; two daughters, Janet (Mrs. Dick) Porter of Glenwood, Iowa, and Donna (Mrs. David) Tinkler of Wichita, Kan.; six grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, Dale Maddox.
Jean Tobin
VERIBEST, Texas -- Jean Tobin, 63, of Veribest, Texas, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, in Veribest.
Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Cedar View cemetery in Doniphan. The Rev. Jeff Hale will officiate.
Johnson's Funeral Home in Veribest is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island.
Mrs. Tobin was born on Oct. 6, 1936, at Prosser.
Survivors include her husband, Jim Tobin; two daughters, Carla Whitaker of San Angelo, Texas, and Bev Godfrey of San Antonio; one son, Craig Tobin of Russellville, Ark.; eight grandchildren; and one sister, Linda Gordon of Colorado Springs, Colo.
Mary Tucker
Mary E. Tucker, 76, of Grand Island died Sunday, Feb. 25, 2001, at her home after an illness.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Kleine Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island with the Rev. Larry Lepper officiating. Burial will be at 2 p.m. in the Kearney City cemetery in Kearney. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Esther Cler
Esther Cler, 73, of Grand Island died Friday, Feb. 23, 2001, at the Tiffany Square Care Center of Grand Island.
Funeral services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Grand Island with the Rev. John D. Russell officiating. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island. Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.
Mrs. Cler was born Oct. 20, 1927, to George and Lena (Green) Knaub in Scottsbluff. She grew up in western Nebraska until her family moved to Torrance, Calif., where she attended Torrance High School.
On Dec. 12, 1945, she married
John Cler in Keesburg, Colo. The couple lived in Denver and later farmed in eastern Colorado and western Nebraska and moved to the rural Wood River area in 1955.
They moved to Grand Island in 1983.
Mrs. Cler was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church.
Survivors include her husband, John, of Grand Island; one daughter, Carol (Mrs. Ray) Pritchett of Overland Park, Kan.; two grandsons; and one brother, Vern Knaub of Aurora, Colo.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
