U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Zenobia 'Toby' Stobbe

Zenobia M. "Toby" Stobbe, 83, of Grand Island died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Park Place Nursing Home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Rockville. The Revs. Rod Pruss and Jim Schmidt will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Catholic cemetery in Rockville.

Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City and from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the church with a 7 p.m. vigil service.

Memorials are suggested to the Polish Heritage Center at Ashton or the Sherman County Historical Society.

Mrs. Stobbe was born on May 16, 1917, on a farm west of Loup City in Sherman County to Edward and Mary (Kaminski) Roszcynialski. She graduated from Rockville High School.

She married Herbert S. Stobbe on Oct. 19, 1936, at St. Mary's Catholic Church. They farmed in the Ashton area in Sherman County before moving in 1944 to the Austin community northwest of Rockville. They continued living on the farm after retiring in 1974. Mr. Stobbe died in September 1994. Mrs. Stobbe stayed on the farm until moving to Park Place Nursing Home.

She was a member of Alpha Nu Extension Club and St. Mary's Catholic Church and a past leader of the Sunset 4-H Club.

Her hobbies were gardening, cooking, cards and sewing.

Survivors include two daughters, Maxine (Mrs. Leo) Liske of Grand Island and Cathy (Mrs. Jim) Vogel of Lincoln; one son, Richard of Grand Island; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Stella Birrer of Healdsburg, Calif.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one daughter, Loretta Jean; one great-grandchild; one brother, Joe Roszcynialski; two sisters, Thadea Kranz and Clara Stobbe Wlaschin; and four infant siblings.

LaDonna 'Louise' Boatman

RANDOLPH -- LaDonna "Louise" Boatman, 77, of Randolph died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at her home.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Frances Catholic Church in Randolph. The Rev. Ronald Battiato will officiate. Burial will be in St. Frances Catholic cemetery in Randolph.

Johnson Funeral Homes of Randolph is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Boatman was born on June 17, 1923, in Armour, S.D., to James Garfield and Olive Mae (Robinson) Shearer. She attended Armour public schools.

In 1941, she moved from Armour to Norfolk, where she worked at a restaurant.

She married Gordon Boatman on Nov. 28, 1942, in Norfolk. They lived in many northeast Nebraska communities. They moved to Randolph in 1968, and she worked at the Cornhusker Cafe, Dairy Dream and Colonial Manor Nursing Home.

She was a member of St. Frances Catholic Church and Randolph Christian Mothers.

Survivors include her husband; four sons, Gerald of Ocheyedan, Iowa, Curtis of Sioux City, Iowa, and David and Kenneth, both of Lincoln; two daughters, LaDetta (Mrs. Nick) Larsen of Sioux City, Iowa, and Nadine (Mrs. Duane) Seyl of Dyresburg, Tenn.; 16 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Iola Mudder of Tyndal, S.D.

She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Monica Ann; five sisters; and three brothers.

Freda Morgan

BROKEN BOW -- Freda Morgan, 95, of Broken Bow, formerly of Omaha and Loup City, died Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Evergreen cemetery in Loup City. The Rev. Shawn Kitzing will officiate.

Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Morgan was born on April 21, 1905, at Cordova to Herman and Blanche (Roush) Schneller. She spent her childhood in Buffalo County. She graduated from Kearney State Teachers College in 1927.

She taught school and then worked for the Omaha school district for more than 40 years.

She married John F. Morgan on July 2, 1933, at Ravenna. The couple spent more than 50 years together. Mr. Morgan passed away in November 1984. Due to failing health, Mrs. Morgan moved to Kearney to be near her family. She later moved to Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Roy and Floyd; and two sisters, Louise Cross and Emma Schmaljohn.

Phillip Spanel

BROKEN BOW -- Phillip James Spanel, 73, of Broken Bow died Monday, Jan. 22, 2001, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. Todd Philipsen will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.

A Christian wake service will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the church. There will be no visitation.

Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society.

Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Spanel was born on July 6, 1927, at Anselmo to Frank and Caroline (Knoell) Spanel. He attended country school and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1946. He then began working for Top Tune Amusement Co.

He served in the U.S. Army from August 1950 to August 1952 during the Korean War and was stationed in Alaska. After his discharge, he returned to Broken Bow and continued working for Top Tune Amusement.

He married Karen Joy Woods on Oct. 26, 1955, in Broken Bow. He purchased Top Tune Amusement, which he owned and operated until retiring seven years ago. They moved to Mountain Home, Ark., in September 1993. They returned to Broken Bow in the fall of 2000.

Mr. Spanel was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, the Broken Bow Elks Lodge and the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Gregory Scott Spanel of Broken Bow and Craig Spanel of Callaway; two daughters, Celeste (Mrs. Bill) Baumert of Gretna and Lisa (Mrs. Michael) Bell of Flowery Branch, Ga.; 13 grandchildren; and four brothers, Lawrence Spanel of Grand Island, Victor Spanel of El Centro, Calif., Robert Spanel of Grand Island and Francis "Andy" Spanel of Heber Springs, Ark.

He was preceded in death by one sister, Louise Spanel.

Freda Springer

AURORA-- Freda Lucille Oswald Springer, 93, of Aurora died Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001, at Memorial Hospital.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pleasant View Bible Church in Aurora. The Rev. Rick Prettyman will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant View cemetery southwest of Aurora.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Mrs. Springer was born on May 5, 1907, in Aurora to Daniel and Eda Adelia (Bald) Oswald.

She grew up and went to country school near Aurora. She graduated from Aurora High School.

She married Albert Springer on Jan. 22, 1936, at her parents' home southwest of Aurora. They farmed in the Murphy area until 1945, when they moved to a farm north of Aurora. They moved into Aurora in 1969. Mr. Springer died in March 1999.

Mrs. Springer was a member of Pleasant View Bible Church.

Survivors include one son, John of Aurora; one daughter, Eda K (Mrs. Larry) Aspegren of Oklahoma City, Okla.; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
