U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Corinne Mester

Corinne M. Mester, 78, of Park Place Nursing Center died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center, where she had been a patient for the past two weeks.

Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Tom Ryan officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home with a 4 p.m. Catholic Daughters rosary and an 8:15 p.m. Sunday parish rosary.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Altar Society.

Mrs. Mester was born on Nov. 3, 1920, at Grand Island to Charles A. and Elizabeth (Fay) Mester. She graduated from St. Mary's High School and the Grand Island School of Business. She was a former employee for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and worked at Bosselman and Eaton Inc. for 25 years before retiring in 1980 for health reasons. She lived at Park Place Nursing Center for the past nine years.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, St. Mary's Altar Society, Catholic Daughters and St. Francis Medical Center Auxiliary.

Survivors include one brother, Stanley Mester of Midwest City, Okla.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Elayne Maloney, and a brother, Robert Mester.

Rev. Vernon Schroeder

The Rev. Vernon P. Schroeder, 80, of Grand Island died Thursday, Sept. 9, 1999, at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island, because of renovations at Trinity United Methodist Church. The Revs. Jim Keyser, Cole Fowler and Richard Urbach will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to Trinity United Methodist Church.

The Rev. Schroeder was born June 9, 1919, to Ernest and Rena (Stark) Schroeder at Eustis. He was raised and educated in Eustis, graduating from Eustis High School in 1936. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Western Union College in LaMars, Iowa, in 1940; his bachelor of divinity degree in 1943, and his master of divinity in 1972 from the Evangelical Theological Seminary.

He married Esther Rembolt on May 17, 1942, at Lincoln. The couple lived in Naperville, Ill., while he was finishing seminary. He served the United Methodist Church in Callaway for 10 years and then was assigned to Ralston to establish a new congregation known as Trinity Evangelical United Brethren Church and ministered there for nine years.

During his pastorate, he served as evangelist for two months for the LaCour Mission in Japan. He went to serve the Lincoln Calvary Church in Lincoln for 11 years before moving to Grand Island where he ministered at Trinity United Methodist Church for five years.

He also served the Hastings First Church at Hastings from which he retired in 1981. He served on many conference boards and positions including director of Christian Education, treasurer of the Conference Missions and Benevolence, and trustee of Committee on Church Union. After his retirement from active ministry in 1981, he returned to Grand Island where he served part time for 10 years as minister of visitation at Trinity United Methodist Church.

He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Kiwanis, a former member of the Masonic Lodge No. 317 and the Retired Seniors Volunteer Program.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Ronald "Ron" P. Schroeder of Lincoln; three daughters, Judy (Mrs. Dennis) Johnson and Beth (Mrs. Ken) Reynolds, both of Forsyth, Mo., and Jane (Mrs. Wes) Duehr of Boyntom Beach, Fla.; eight grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

Ruby P. Boyce

ORD -- Ruby P. Boyce, 89, of Ord, died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Ord United Methodist Church. Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Monday with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. at Ord Memorial Chapel.

Memorials are suggested to Valley County Hospital or the American Heart Association.

'Rags' Carlson

STROMSBURG -- Carl Ragner "Rags" Carlson, 92, of Stromsburg died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Silver Creek First United Methodist Church. The Rev. Bev J. Minor and Chaplain Dick Bauer will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. A family-only prayer service will be at 7 p.m.

Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Carlson was born July 25, 1907 to Carl O. and Olga (Stohl) Carlson near Stromsburg. The family later moved to a farm near Havens where he attended Riverside School District No. 28.

He married Myrtle J. Peterson of Stromsburg on March 14, 1932. They lived on a farm south of Havens. He received his pilot's license in the 1940s and became an aerial spray pilot. He was also a charter member of the Nebraska Flying Farmers and a member of the International Flying Farmers.

In 1969, they moved to Silver Creek where they lived until February 1998 when they moved to the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg. The couple celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary in March.

He was an active member of the Fairview United Methodist Church, later transferring to the First United Methodist Church of Silver Creek. He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite and York Rite of Freemasonry, Tehama and the Sesostris Temples of the Shrine and a member of the BPO Elks Lodge No. 1024.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Ron Carlson of Silver Creek; four daughters, Donna Wagner of Stromsburg, Karleen Watts of Osceola, Mavis (Mrs. Marlan) Hill of Sioux City, Iowa, and Patricia (Mrs. Tom) DeLay of Norfolk; four sisters, Elsie Martin of Silver Creek, Bertha Larson of Grand Island, Vivian Brady of LeRoy, N.Y., and Olive Butera of Belmont, Calif.; 24 grandchildren; and 49 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one brother, three sisters and one grandson.

Emma Fenster

AURORA -- Emma Fenster, 96, of Aurora died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Memorial Community Care at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hampton with the Rev. George E. Damm officiating. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Mrs. Fenster was born on April 15, 1903, at Indianola to Christian and Catherine (Bamesberger) Wall. She grew up and started school in Red Willow County. She moved with her parents to Hampton, where she attended parochial grade school at St. Peter Lutheran Church and later Hampton High School. She worked as a housemother for families in York and Lincoln.

She married Walter Fenster at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hampton on April 18, 1925. They lived on farms in York and Hamilton Counties before moving to his parents' farm in 1944. She moved to Hampton to live with her mother when her husband died in 1959. Several years later, she moved to Aurora to manage Ken's Motel until her retirement in 1968. She moved back to Hampton after her retirement, then returned to Aurora in 1990.

She was a member of St. Peter Lutheran Church Ladies Aid and the Neighborhood Sewing Club.

Survivors include two sons, Rolland of Lincoln and Lowell of North Platte; four grandchildren; one step-granddaughter; four great-grandchildren; two brothers, Raymond Wall of North Platte and Carl Wall of Hemut, Calif.; and three sisters, Gertrude Miller of Hampton, Dorothy Fenster of Broken Bow and Velma Sullivan of McLean, Va.

She was preceded in death by her husband; four brothers, Edwin, Herman, William and Walter; and two sisters, Lena and Clara.

Lydia Linkswiler

STROMSBURG -- Lydia F. E. (Lochmiller) Linkswiler, 99, of Stromsburg died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.

Visitation is from 10 a.m. until service time Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Linkswiler was born on Oct. 5, 1899, at Longpine to Phillip and Maria (Schulz) Lochmiller. She married Sterling S. Linkswiler on Oct. 12, 1918, at Norfolk. They farmed in Pierce County for three years and moved to Taft, Calif., for two years. They returned to Meadow Grove. In the 1930s, they moved to Petersburg, where they operated a cafe until 1943. They moved again to California, where she worked in the pie department for Vandecamp's Bakery for 15 years, making thousands of pies. In 1965, they retired and moved to Stromsburg to be near other family members.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Oscar; and one sister, Luella.
