Richard Haggart
Richard J. Haggart, 75, of Grand Island, formerly of St. Paul, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at Wedgewood Care Center.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Kenneth Christensen will officiate. Inurnment will be in Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul. Military honors at graveside will be by Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul.
There will be no visitation. Mr. Haggart was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Association.
Mr. Haggart was born on Aug. 5, 1924, in Grand Island to Ralph and Clara (Bartle) Haggart. He was educated in St. Paul and graduated from St. Paul High School in 1942. He attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln before enlisting in the V-12 program of the U.S. Naval Reserve and attending Doane College.
He then attended the U.S. Naval Reserve Midshipman's School at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., where he was commissioned an ensign in 1944. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as a lieutenant junior grade. He was discharged in 1946.
He married
Lillian von Wieding on March 24, 1946, at Brooklyn, N.Y. He graduated from UNL Law School in 1949.
Mr. Haggart worked in the attorney general's office in Lincoln before returning to St. Paul to practice law with his father. He retired in 1983 and moved to Riverside Lodge in February 1999.
He enjoyed hunting and golf. He served as St. Paul city attorney and Howard County attorney.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of St. Paul, St. Paul Country Club and St. Paul Drum and Bugle Corps. He was a past member of the Tehama Shriners and past master of the Masonic Lodge of St. Paul. He was a 52-year member of Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 of St. Paul, where he had served as post commander.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Douglas of Lincoln; one daughter, Veronica (Mrs. Charles) Haggart of McLean, Va.; one grandchild; and one sister, Janet Trojan of North Webster, Ind.
Ralph Sisson
Ralph H. Sisson, 81, of Grand Island, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at the St. Francis Medical Center of Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Mr. Sisson will be cremated with burial at a later date.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Grand Generation Center of Grand Island.
Mr. Sisson was born Sept. 27, 1918, to Ralph and Ada (Miller) Sisson at Belgrade. The family settled in Kearney, where he graduated from Kearney High School.
While in Kearney, Mr. Sisson was an electrician by trade. He entered the United States Army on May 18, 1945, serving during World War II.
He married
Josephine Carlson in Kearney. The family later moved to Long Beach, Calif., where he worked for Southern California Edison Company until his retirement.
After the death of his first wife, he married
Carol Haines in Long Beach, Calif. They moved to Grand Island in 1992.
After the death of his second wife, he married
Gladys Krauss of Grand Island.
He enjoyed raising flowers and pigeons. He was actively involved in the Grand Generation Center in Grand Island and the Senior Swingers Band.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Edwin of Grand Island and Robert of Cottage Grove, Ore.; two daughters, Sheila (Mrs. Larry) Bossard of Aberdine, Wash. and Judy (Mrs. Jim) Potter of Bay Village, Ohio; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother Clyde and one son, Richard.
Harry Anderson
STROMSBURG -- Harry H. Anderson, 89, of Stromsburg died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at the Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg. The Rev. Jeff Thurman and the Rev. Lester Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Stromsburg Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Palmer Funeral Home of Stromsburg.
Mr. Anderson was born Dec. 17, 1909, at Ramsjo, Smaland, Sweden to Emrick and Anna (Olsson) Andersson. He was educated in Sweden. He arrived in America in February 1928, with his mother and two siblings.
He married
Hannah Larson on Feb. 14, 1940, in Hordville. The couple farmed near Polk for 32 years before retiring in Stromsburg in 1975.
He was a member of Swede Plain Methodist Church near Polk for many years. He was also a member of Stromsburg United Methodist church; a 4-H leader; a Sunshine Award winner; and a Green Thumb volunteer at the Stromsburg Senior Center for 15 years.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening and playing cards.
Survivors include a son, Harold Anderson of Stromsburg; three daughters, Janice (Mrs. Larry) Bengtson of Grand Island, Delores (Mrs. Galen) Sterner of Doniphan and Dorothy (Mrs. Gary) Rasmussen of Parker, Colo.; ten grandchildren; ten great-granchildren; and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Hannah in 1985; a sister, Margaret Larson; a brother, Sigfrid Anderson; and a granddaughter.
'Ed' Ash
BROKEN BOW -- Ival Edwin "Ed" Ash, 76, of Broken Bow died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Jerry Ruzicka will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association.
Mr. Ash was born on March 14, 1923, at Gates to LeRoy and Alta (Westbrook) Ash. He grew up in the Gates and Merna areas and attended school at Merna.
He did mechanical work and lived and worked in various towns. He had lived in Broken Bow for 30 years. Mr. Ash also worked for the county Highway Department for 10 years.
He enjoyed fishing.
Survivors include two grandchildren and two sisters, Velma Applegarth of Broken Bow and Jane Cottam of Hastings.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a son, Ival Ash Jr.; four brothers, Harold, Leo, Lewis and LeRoy; and one sister, Ruth.
Louise Dewhirst
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Louise M. Dewhirst, 91, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, Oct. 4, 1999, in Colorado Springs.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Del Roper will officiate. Burial will be in the Mausoleum at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the church or Andrew Chapter of the Eastern Star or Daughters of the Nile.
