Addie Phelps
CLEBURNE, TEX. -- Addie "Isabelle" Phelps, 93, of Cleburne, Texas, formerly of Grand Island, died Thursday, Jan. 4, 2001, in Cleburne.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Grand Island City cemetery with the Rev. Robert Flynn officiating. Visitation will be from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home in Grand island.
Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church of Joshua, Texas.
Mrs. Phelps was born March 14, 1907, in Grand Island.
Survivors include a son, Robert of Columbia, Md.; a daughter, Mary (Mrs. Robert) Tague of Cleburne, Texas; seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank.
Robert Esau
PETERSBURG -- Robert E. Esau, 77, of Petersburg died Friday, Jan. 12, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island as the result of an accident.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the United Church of Christ in Albion. Burial will be in the Mount Pleasant cemetery in Petersburg with military rites conducted by the Petersburg American Legion Post 334.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mr. Esau was born Sept. 29, 1923, in Petersburg to Peter and Elisabeth (Kroecker) Esau. He attended school at Boone County School District #46 northwest of Petersburg, after which he served in the U.S. Army.
He married
Belle Leach on Feb. 26, 1955, in Albion. He farmed and worked at filling stations while living in the Albion and Akron area. In 1971 the couple moved to Petersburg where he worked as a trucker.
He enjoyed playing the harmonica, writing poetry and gardening. He was a member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Albion and American Legion Post 334 of Petersburg.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Robert of Farwell; four daughters, Robin (Mrs. Karl) Grosshans, of Lodi, Calif., Teresa (Mrs. Henry) Bergman of Tujanga, Calif., Gail (Mrs. Alvin) Starman of Petersburg and Jennifer (Mrs. John) Torres, of Lodi, Calif.; one sister, Frances Thorin of Bartlett; 13 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Marcy Lynne; four brothers, Henry, John, Harry, and Elmer; and four sisters, Katherine, Ella, Bessie, and Eva.
Barbara Lewis
BURWELL -- Barbara Jane Lewis, 76, of Burwell, died Sunday, January 14, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell. The Rev. Kevin Murray will officiate. Burial will be in the Ulysses cemetery in Ulysses, Kan., on Friday.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. Memorials are suggested to the Cedar Creek Bible Church.
Donna Coufal
PLATTSMOUTH -- Donna L. Coufal, 75, of Plattsmouth, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at Bergan Mercy Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Rev. Wendell Davis will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Coufal was born on May 25, 1925, at Lincoln to Roy and Eulalie (Zuerlein) Bridger. She grew up and was educated in Fullerton.
She married
Ernest Coufal on Nov. 25, 1952. They moved to Plattsmouth and resided there until her death.
She spent most of her life as a housewife and homemaker, and she enjoyed music.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Lauren Coufal of Sioux City, Iowa, and Kerry Barkman of Blue Springs, Minn.; two brothers, Ralph of Belgrade and Don of Central City and three grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Lynn and one sister, Arnette Furby.
Dorothy Cusimano
BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. -- Dorothy H. Cusimano, 98, of Blue Springs, Mo., formerly of Sherman and Custer counties, died Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001, at St. Mary's Hospital in Blue Springs, Mo.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Loup City. The Rev. Mark Cadenbach will officiate. Burial will be in the Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at the Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow and from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Methodist Church in Loup City.
Mrs. Cusimano was born on May 26, 1902, nine miles north of Loup City to Samuel and Matilda (Huncker) Chilson. She spent most of her life in Loup City where she held various jobs as a hotel and school cook and church secretary.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara Siecke of Independence, Mo.; one son, Larry of Grandview, Mo.; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sisters; and one grandson.
Dr. Stephen Maks
Dr. Stephen W. Maks, 73, of 1517 Stagecoach Road died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jack Rademacher will officiate. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Black Hills National cemetery in Sturgis, S.D.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the church with the family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. A parish wake service will be at 7 p.m. Sunday.
Memorials are suggested to the church or the donor's choice.
Dr. Maks was born on Sept. 1, 1926, at Sedro-Wooley, Wash., to Stephen and Frances (Lloyd) Maks. He graduated from Jefferson High in Portland, Ore., in 1944. He served in the U.S. Army from March 1945 to December 1946.
He graduated from the University of Portland in 1950 and from Creighton University with his medical doctorate in 1953.
He married
Mary Rosalyn Hartnett on Feb. 7, 1953, in Hubbard. He taught internal medicine at the University of Oregon School of Medicine in Portland, was chief of internal medicine at St. Vincent's Hospital and assistant clinical professor for the internal medicine department at the University of South Dakota School of Medicine.
He was in private practice in internal medicine in Portland from 1959 to 1977. He was staff physician and chief of the department of medicine at Fort Meade Veterans Affairs Medical Center in South Dakota from 1977 through 1985.
He was chief of staff at the Grand Island Veterans Affairs Medical Center from 1985 to 1992, staff physician supervising ambulatory care from 1992 to 1996, acting chief of staff from 1996 to 1997 and a contract physician in ambulatory care since 1997.
He was a member of medical societies in Oregon, the Black Hills, Minnesota and South Dakota Medical Society; Alpha Tau Delta Honor Medical Society; Mayo Clinic Alumni Society; Federal Health Care Executives Institute Alumni Association; Federal Executive Association of Grand Island; and American Medical Association.
Dr. Maks received the Director's Hands and Heart Award at Fort Meade, University of South Dakota School of Medicine Faculty Recognition Award for Outstanding Teaching and the Veterans Administration Special Contribution Awards.
He was a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church, the parish council, Knights of Columbus and Riverside Golf Club.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Daniel of Beaverton, Ore., Patrick of Indianapolis and Jeffrey of Rapid City, S.D.; one daughter, Stephanie Maks of Minneapolis; six grandchildren; and one brother, Dave of Cottage Grove, Ore.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marlene Willson.
