Albert F. Thurber
Albert F. Thurber, 96, of Grand Island died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Mr. Thurber was cremated. Burial will be at a later date in the Phillips Cemetery.
Mr. Thurber was born on Oct. 8, 1903, at Deweese to Walter A. and Mary Marie (Stichka) Thurber. He was educated in the Nelson schools.
He married
Neva Hepler in July 1925. He worked as a carpenter. He served 40 years in law enforcement as a deputy sheriff in Nuckolls County, village marshal in Phillips, deputy marshal at ordnance plant and at the Pinkerton Detective Agency in Hamilton County.
He married
Rose Eihusen in 1943 in Bellville, Kan. After leaving law enforcement, he returned to construction work and retired in 1966.
He was a member of Eagles Aerie 378 of Grand Island. He had been a member of the Stichka Rodeo Stock Contractors Rodeo from 1948 to 1953.
Survivors include two sons, Stanley of Aurora, Colo., and Scott of Clovis, N.M.; one daughter, Alberta Alberts of Doniphan; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and one sister, Viola Molley of Fairbury.
He was preceded in death by his wife; two sons, Tom and James; and two sisters.
Connie Karel
RAVENNA -- Connie Karel, 90, of Ravenna died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Mark Cadenbach will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the church. Rasmussen Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Karel was born on July 13, 1909, at Garland to George and Jessie (Palmer) Welsh. She was educated at Garland and graduated from Seward High School. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for two years and graduated from Kearney State College in 1966. She taught at Goehner, Oshkosh, Leahy, Alliance, District 42, Hazard and District 107 in Buffalo County, Cairo and Boelus.
She married
Jerry Lester Karel on June 16, 1940, in Seward. The couple moved 53 times with stops in Chadron, Alliance and Ravenna. They purchased a home in Ravenna in 1945. She retired from teaching in 1968 after 21 years.
She was a member of the Ravenna United Methodist Church, Ravenna Garden Club, Ravenna Women's Club, Eastern Star, Loiness, a former member of the Ravenna Chamber of Commerce and Community Improvement Committee and a past Boy Scout leader.
Survivors include two sons, Jerry of Ravenna and Sam of Gunnersville, Ala.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers.
Hazel Schneringer
AURORA -- Hazel Schneringer, 86, of Aurora died Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2000, at the Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 10:30 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Aurora. The Rev. Joe Scahill will officiate. Burial will be in Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Higby Mortuary.
Mrs. Schneringer was born on Feb. 24, 1913, at Odell, Ill., to Walter and Effie (Kelsey) Neth. She grew up in Custer County and attended rural school. She graduated from Callaway High School.
She married
Howard Schneringer on April 11, 1932. They farmed near Callaway until 1953, when the couple bought a farm near Broken Bow. They moved into Broken Bow in 1971. In 1975, they moved to Aurora.
Mrs. Schneringer was a member of the Aurora United Methodist Church, Anna Circle and Fidelis Sunday School Class.
Survivors include one son, Allan of Brighton, Colo.; a daughter, Loretta (Mrs. Bob) Leach of Aurora; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and two brothers, Eugene Neth of Mason City and Walter Neth Jr. of Ocala, Fla.
LaVern Ortgiesen
LaVern Eugene Ortgiesen, 82, of Grand Island, died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Wilcox. The Revs. Jean and Warren Alnor will officiate. Burial will be in the Wilcox Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday at the Banta Torrey Funeral Home in Wilcox.
A memorial fund has been established.
Mr. Ortgiesen was born Jan. 10, 1918, at Hildreth to George W. and Jennie Dirk (Harms) Ortgiesen. He attended the Forrest Valley Rural District 51 School in Franklin County. He attended and graduated from high school at Hildreth with the class of 1935.
On Aug. 27, 1935, he married
Charlotte Ann Johnson at Hildreth. They farmed with his father near Hildreth until 1941. During World War II he worked as an airplane riveter in Columbus, Ohio and at Kearney. Following the war he moved with his family to the family farm southeast of Wilcox where he farmed until 1978. While living there, he served on the Lincoln Township Board. They moved to their home in Wilcox in 1975.
After retiring from farming he sold Federal Crop Insurance until 1983. During their retirement, they spent several winters at McCallan, Texas. The Ortgiesens moved into Tiffany Square in Grand Island a year ago and moved to Wedgewood Care Center one week ago.
He was a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church in Hildreth. After moving to Wilcox they attended the Wilcox United Methodist Church. He was also a member of the Wilcox Lions Club.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Gayla (Mrs. Eugene) Hunt of Holdrege, Mona (Mrs. Delmar) Garrelts of Grand Island and Jo Ann (Mrs. Robert) Alderman of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; one son, Eugene "Butch" of rural Wilcox; one brother, LeRoy of Wickenburg, Ariz.; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Larry Ingles
HOUSTON -- Larry D. Ingles, 72, of Houston died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Abundant Life Christian Center in Grand Island. The Rev. Stephen Warriner will officiate.
There will be no visitation. Mr. Ingles was cremated.
Rasmussen Funeral Home in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Ingles was born on Aug. 10, 1927, in Greenville, Mich., to Howard and Uldene (Shipman) Ingles. He grew up near Sparta, Mich., and graduated from high school there.
He enlisted in the Navy in 1945 and served on the USS Missouri. After serving in the Navy, he enlisted in the Air Force.
He married
Patty G. Stokes on Aug. 8, 1950. The couple moved to Minden following his military discharge, and he worked as a laboratory technician at the hospital until 1960. He worked at the Kearney Clinic until 1972, when they moved to Texas. Mrs. Ingles died in 1981.
Mr. Ingles was a member of the First Baptist Church of Beaumont, Texas. In his earlier days, he enjoyed playing the piano and organ for various dance bands. He also enjoyed going to concerts, operas and musicals.
Survivors include two sons, L. Dale and Richard of Ravenna; one daughter, Chris (Mrs. Barry) Glause of Palmer; four grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; and two step great-grandchildren.
Alice McKeag
CONCORD, Calif. -- Alice Catherine Hinkson McKeag, 93, died Jan. 22, 2000, in Concord, Calif.
Services were at St. Luke's Methodist Church in Richmond, Calif. on Jan. 25. Burial was at Sunset View cemetery in El Cerrito, Calif.
Mrs. McKeag was born Sept. 10, 1906, near Cairo to Preston and Arendse (Dehn) Hinkson. She graduated from Wood River High School in 1923 and attended Nebraska State Teachers College in Kearney. She taught in District 16 School in Hall County and three Nebraska towns until 1935.
She married
Maurice D. McKeag, formerly of Wood River, on June 16, 1935 in Richmond. In 1941 they built a house and lived there until 1997, when they moved to an assisted living home in Concord, Calif.
The couple joined the Richmond First Presbyterian Church Mariners Club in 1942. They joined and attended St. Luke's Methodist Church in Richmond from 1960 through March 1997.
Survivors include two sons, Roy of Santa Fe, N.M. and Gregory of San Pablo, Calif.; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; one sister, Helen Larson of Grand Island; three brothers, Keith and Preston of Cairo and Frank of Muleshoe, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1997 and three brothers, Hugh, Everett and Dean.
