U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Edna Payne

LOVELAND, Colo. -- Edna P. Payne, 70, of Loveland, Colo., died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Boulder, Colo.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. March 31 at the United Methodist Church in Alma.

There will be no visitation. Mrs. Payne was cremated.

Mrs. Payne was born March 17, 1930, in Alma to Ross and Edna (Baker) Andres. She grew up and attended schools in Alma, graduating in 1947.

On Jan. 1, 1949, she married Merle "Flap" Payne. They lived in the Alma and Holdrege areas until 1985, when they moved to Golden and then to Loveland, Colo.

She was a fan of baseball and football and was known for her crocheted Barbie doll outfits.

Survivors include her husband; three sons, Ken Payne of Lincoln, David Payne of Hastings and John Payne of Bethesda, Md.; three daughters, Peggy (Mrs. Brad) Perry of Ogallala, Pamela (Mrs. Don) Laisure of Eagle, Colo., and Patricia (Mrs. Tom) Jones of Loveland, Colo.; 11 grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one great-grandchild; two step-great-grandchildren; one brother, Lanny Andres of Merced, Calif., and one sister, Karry (Mrs. Ken) Smith of Giltner.

She was preceded in death by one infant son; an infant brother and one brother, Raymond Andres.

Pedro Ruiz

ODESSA, Texas -- Pedro R. Ruiz, 56, of Odessa, Texas, died Saturday, March 17, 2001, at Midland Memorial Hospital.

A rosary was at 7 p.m. Monday at Slaton's Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Slaton, Texas. The Rev. Phillip Maldonado officiated.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the church, with the Rev. Lawrence Hemp officiating. Military graveside services will take place at Englewood cemetery in Slaton, Texas.

Memorials are suggested to the Catholic Charities.

Englunds Funeral Service of Slaton, Texas, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Ruiz was born March 23, 1944, in Bangs, Texas. He moved to Slaton in 1948 from Coleman, and attended Slaton schools. He attained his GED and served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from July 1967 until July 1969. He remained in the Reserves until 1975 and was in the National Guard from 1983 to 1985.

He married Adelina Garza on June 9, 1972, in Slaton. In 1980, he moved to Odessa, Texas, where he was employed by OIME, Standard and Cardinal Industries as a machinist. He retired in 1997 because of ill health.

He was a life member of VFW Post No. 4372 and a member of the National Guard Association. He was also a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Odessa.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Dorinda Ann Ruiz of Lubbock, Texas; six brothers, Pablo of Shelton, Benito, Steve and Lupe, all of Slaton, Texas, Jesse of Buffalo, Texas, and Tony of Lubbock, Texas; four sisters, Mary Leyva, Teresa Guerra and Sarah Gonzales, all of Slaton, and Josie Valdez of Granbury, Texas.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Manuela Arguello.

Alberta Jarrell

Alberta A. Jarrell, 89, of Grand Island died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Tim Anderson officiating. Inurnment will be in the St. Stephen's Columbarium.

There will be no visitation. Mrs. Jarrell was cremated.

Memorials are suggested to St. Stephen's Episcopal Church.

Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Jarrell was born Oct. 28, 1911, at Fairbury to John C. and Cora (Haines) Applegate. She moved with her family to Grand Island at age 9 and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School. She attended Stephen's College in Columbia, Mo., for two years and the University of Nebraska Lincoln, graduating in 1933.

She married Ellis Shepherd on June 19, 1935. Mr. Shepherd died in December 1945.

On Jan. 23, 1950, she married Archibald Jarrell. Mr. Jarrell was the former editor of the Grand Island Independent. He died in March 1976.

Mrs. Jarrell was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church, Chapter EH of P.E.O. and lifelong member of Riverside Golf Club. She enjoyed duplicate bridge and had been the last surviving member of a bridge club that was formed while she was in high school.

Survivors include two daughters, Joanne (Mrs. Carl) Crook of Colorado Springs, Colo. and Susan (Mrs. Harry) Chan of Atlanta; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both of her husbands.

Albert Panec

Albert E. Panec, 66, of Grand Island died Thursday, March 15, 2001, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Faith United Methodist Church with the Rev. Richard Karohl officiating. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. Monday at the DuBois cemetery in DuBois.

Visitation is planned from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday with family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m. at All Faiths Funeral Home.

Frances O'Connor

BURWELL -- Frances M. O'Connor, 85, of Burwell died Monday, March 12, 2001, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.

Services were Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Burwell. The Rev. Bernard Berger officiated. Burial was in the Cottonwood Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. O'Connor was born on July 18, 1915, in Hannah, N.D., to Jim and Frances Frank. The family moved to a farm by Bagley, Minn., when she was very young. She attended Bagley Public School and then moved to Burwell.

In 1938, she married William P. O'Connor. They lived on a farm three miles east of Burwell. She moved to town in 1991 and was living with her daughter, Marsha, until becoming ill earlier this year.

She was a lifelong member of Sacred Heart Parish. She enjoyed creating Raggedy Ann dolls for the annual bazaar.

Survivors include three daughters, Sheila (Mrs. Robert) Salmen of Hastings, Marsha O'Connor Taylor of Burwell and Maureen Worden of Lincoln; one son, Kevin of Shepherd, Mont.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Frank of Bagley, Minn., and Bert Frank of San Francisco, Calif.; and one sister, Marion Halgren of Maitland, Fla.

She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, James and Benjamin; one sister, Harriet Wright; and two sons, James and an infant son, Johnny.

Lilas Slagle

SARGENT -- Lilas C. Slagle, 90, of Sargent died Wednesday, March 14, 2001, at the Sargent Nursing Center.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Don Schauda will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Hope cemetery in Sargent.

Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
