'Fritz' Woodward, 83, motel owner
Francis D. "Fritz" Woodward, 83, of 3208 E. Highway 30, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at St. Francis Skilled Nursing.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday in Gollaher Chapel at Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Del Roper will officiate. Burial with military rites will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Monday, with the family present from 5 to 7 p.m.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Trinity United Methodist Church or the Elks.
Mr. Woodward was born Sept. 5, 1917, at the family home east of Grand Island in Hall County to Horace Oliver and Carrie Agnes (Hodgson) Woodward. He grew up east of Grand Island near the Union Stockyards and Shady Bend area.
He graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1934.
He married
Margaret G. Hutton on Jan. 16, 1939.
He served as a member of the Army Air Corps in World War II and was decorated for service during the invasion of Normandy. He was the owner and manager of the Shady Bend Motel in Grand Island.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Hall County Historical Society, BPOE Elks No. 604 (past exalted ruler and past district deputy), Hall County Rural Fire Department (charter member) and past school board member of Seedling Mile and Northwest High School.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Marilyn Jo (Mrs. Robert) Wagner of Lincoln; two sons, Craig of Grand Island and Richard of Beatrice; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Howard, Loyd and Bobby; and granddaughter, Jillian Kathleen Woodward.
'Lillian' Belt
GIBBON -- C. Lillian Belt, 92, of Gibbon, died Sunday, May 6, 2001, at the Gibbon Good Samaritan Center, where she had been a resident.
Services are pending with the Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon/Shelton.
Survivors include one son, Floyd of Reeds Spring, Mo.; two daughters, Theresa Hagge of Gibbon and Pauline Chamgna of Omaha; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
Marian Dunbar, 91, Hardware Store owner
TAYLOR -- Marian H. Dunbar, 91, of Taylor, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Burwell Health Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Rhoad Funeral Chapel in Sargent. The Rev. Michael Laing will officiate. Burial will be in the Taylor Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Dunbar was born March 26, 1910, in Loup County to William and Marian (Roblyer) Helmkamp. She attended rural school in Loup County and then attended Taylor High School and graduated in 1929.
She taught school and worked at the Taylor Post Office before her marriage.
She married
Henry Shannon Dunbar Oct. 14, 1945, in Belleville, Kans.
They bought Dunbar Hardware in Taylor in 1954. She assisted at the hardware store with her husband until his death in 1969. She continued until she sold the store in 1975.
She was on the library board, enjoyed gardening and reading, and the activities of her grandchildren.
In 1997, she entered the Burwell Health Care Center, where she resided until her death.
Survivors include one daughter, Delores (Mrs. John) Hyde of Ord; one son, Henry of Lincoln; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one daughter, Annabelle; and three brothers, Bert, Joe, and Howard Helmkamp.
Kermit Gundersen
KENESAW -- Kermit Gundersen, 88, of Kenesaw, died Friday, May 4, 2001, at Haven Home.
Graveside services and burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Hanover Presbyterian Churchyard Cemetery, southeast of Hastings. The Rev. Jay Snell will officiate.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday and from 9 to 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings.
Memorials are suggested to Hanover Presbyterian Church.
Mr. Gundersen was born Oct. 17, 1912, in Adams County to Carl and Lydia (Trier) Gundersen.
He married
Anna S. Rothfuss on Oct. 18, 1933, in Kearney. She died in 1990.
He was a life-long area resident and a member of Hanover Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include four daughters, Donna Busboom of Hastings, Virginia Busboom of Doniphan, Margaret Piel of Fort Collins, Colo., and Glenda Bell of Harvard; two sons, Doyle and Waldene, both of Hastings; 19 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dean.
Ella Klinginsmith
ST. PAUL -- Ella M. Klinginsmith, 75, of St. Paul died Sunday, May 6, 2001 at St. Francis Skilled Care in Grand Island.
Services are pending at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Ralph Schanou, 86, Farmer
SHELTON -- Ralph E. Schanou, 86, of Shelton, died Saturday, May 5, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Shelton United Methodist Church. The Rev. John Ewton will officiate. Burial will be in Shelton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Shelton United Methodist Church, Good Samaritan Center, or Shelton Emergency Unit.

Mr. Schanou was born Oct. 27, 1914, in Shelton to George and Flora (Richards) Schanou. He attended the Shelton public schools and graduated in 1931 from Shelton High School.
He was raised on a farm north of Shelton, where he lived and farmed until his retirement in 1987.
He enjoyed farming, working on machinery and motors, and sharing coffee and conversation with friends in Shelton.
Survivors include a sister, Bessie of the Good Samaritan Center.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Jennie; and a brother, George.
