Lyle Smith
Lyle J. Smith, 68, of, Grand Island, died Tuesday Feb. 1, 2000, at the Lakeview Nursing/Rehab Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, at the First Presbyterian Church in Grand Island. The Rev. C. Roger Nelson will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be 4 to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Preschool or Tabitha Hospice.
Mr. Smith was born on Jan. 26, 1932, to Jacob H. and Esther J. (Harter) Smith at Stockham. He grew up and was educated at Henderson, and graduated from Henderson High School in 1949.
He entered the U.S. Army on Sept. 3, 1952, serving during the Korean War and spending 16 months in Austria. He received his discharge on Aug. 20, 1954.
He married
Nina Thiesen on Sept. 17, 1954, at Henderson. The couple lived in Lincoln and later Henderson.
The couple later moved to Newton, Kan. where he attended Bethel College, graduating in 1958 with his Bachelors Degree in Education. After graduation they lived in Kansas and he taught school there. The family moved to Grand Island in July of 1965. He taught school at Walnut for 14 years, retiring in 1979.
He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church where he was a deacon. He also was a member of local, state and national educational associations.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Jerry of Grand Island; one daughter, Diane England of Doniphan; three grandchildren; and one sister, Phylis Freisen of Henderson.
Lillian Newcomer
STROMSBURG -- Lillian D. Newcomer, 98, of Stromsburg died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Stromsburg. The Rev. Jeff Thurman will officiate. Burial will be in Hoffer Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Friday at Palmer Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mrs. Newcomer was born on Sept. 29, 1901, near Boelus to John P. and Lyda (Kruse) Berck. She attended Osceola High School.
She married
Dwight Newcomer on Feb. 13, 1922, in York. The family lived on a farm east of Stromsburg, where Mrs. Newcomer was a homemaker. They lived in Stromsburg until the mid-1970s. Mr. Newcomer died in 1983. Mrs. Newcomer moved to Midwest Covenant Home in 1986.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and was active in the Methodist women's group. She was also a member of the Polk County Historical Society.
Survivors include a son, Baldwin of York; a daughter, Lloydell (Mrs. Duane) Henggler of Fairburn, Ga.; a foster son, Danny Danhauer of York; 18 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; three brothers, Woodrow Berck and Lin Berck of Marquette and Marvel Berck of Hoover, Ala.; and a sister, Ethel Schwarz of Phoenix.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Maurice; a daughter, Alice; two brothers; and three sisters.
Hazel Christensen
HOLDREGE -- Hazel Genese Christensen, 92, of Holdrege, formerly of Grand Island, died Monday, Jan. 31, 2000, at her home in Holdrege.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Grand Island City Cemetery. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate.
There will be no visitation.
The Nelson-Harris Funeral Home of Holdrege is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Christensen was born April 27, 1907, in Worth County, Mo. to Lafe and Ida (Barber) Garrett. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school.
She married
Thomas Jefferson Bennet in St. Joseph, Mo. on May 12, 1928. They lived in southeastern Nebraska. In 1947, they moved to Grand Island. Mr. Bennet died in 1962.
On June 1, 1964, she married
Carl Christensen in Grand Island. They lived on a farm near Boelus until Mr. Christen's retirement in 1966. At this time they moved into Grand Island. Mrs. Christensen moved to Holdrege in 1992 where she lived until her death.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island and the O.E.S., receiving her 50-year-pin last year. She also was a past member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Boelus.
Survivors include her daughter, Genese Munn of Grand Island; and two grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; one sister, Maudie Mobley; and five brothers, Charlie, Cecil, Ralph, Claude and Emmett Garrett.
Kathleen Burnight
HAWARDEN, Iowa -- Kathleen M. Burnight, 52, of Hawarden, Iowa, formerly of Fullerton, died Jan. 26, 2000, at the Hawarden hospital following a long bout with cancer.
Services were on Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hawarden with the Rev. LeRoy Seuntjens officiating. Burial was in the parish cemetery.
Porter-Dow Funeral Home in Hawarden was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Burnight was born on July 31, 1947, at Cedar Rapids to Robert and Rita (Wlaschin) Zaruba. She attended Fullerton schools and was a 1965 graduate of Fullerton High School. She graduated from Wayne State College in December 1968. She received her master's degree in special education from the University of South Dakota at Vermilion in 1979.
She married
Larry Burnight on Oct. 5, 1968, at St. Peter's Catholic Church in Fullerton. The couple lived for several years at Yankton, S.D., before moving to Hawarden. She was a special education teacher at Sioux Center, Iowa, High School until she retired due to illness.
Mrs. Burnight was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, PEO and took part in a Bible study class. She was a 23-year member of the Fullerton Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Kelly Richardson of Yankton, S.D., and Katie of Hawarden; one son, Brian of Big Bear Lake, Calif.; two grandchildren; her mother, of Belgrade; two sisters, Mary (Mrs. Jim) Buck of Fullerton and Judy (Mrs. Bruce) Kirby of Eureka, Mont.; and three brothers, Donald Zaruba of Savage, Minn., Robert Zaruba of Bennington and LeRoy Zaruba of Fullerton.
She was preceded in death by her father and one sister, Joan Nicholas.
Alice Crites
LAKE OSWEGO, Ore. -- Alice Marie Tooley Crites, 98, of Lake Oswego, Ore., formerly of Central City, died Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2000, at Lake Oswego.
Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Central City Cemetery. The Rev. Dale Sallans will officiate.
There will be no visitation. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements.
Dr. Richard Sautter
MARSHFIELD, Wis. -- Dr. Richard Daniel Sautter, 73, of Marshfield, Wis., died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at St. Joseph's Hospital in Marshfield.
Services were on Wednesday at Our Lady of Peace Catholic Church in Marshfield. Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mount Hope cemetery in Scotia.
Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of local arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Gwen D. Sebold Research Fellowship at Marshfield Medical Research Foundation.
Dr. Sautter was born on Dec. 30, 1926, in Ord to Daniel and Teresa Sautter. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the Pacific Theater.
He married
Rosemary E. Graham on Aug. 4, 1956. He earned his bachelor of science and medicine degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. He received his medical doctorate from the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He served his internship at Highland Alameda County in Oakland, Calif. He received training in general surgery, served as instructor of general surgery and served his residency in thoracic surgery at the State University of Iowa at Iowa City.
Dr. Sautter joined the Marshfield Clinic's thoracic and cardiovascular surgery department in 1961. He started the open-heart surgery program in Marshfield. He designed and patented a device known as the RDS oxygenator, which made possible emergency cardiopulmonary bypass for open-heart surgery and pulmonary embolectomy.
Dr. Sautter was a founding member of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and a Fellow in the American College of Surgeons. He wrote or co-wrote more than 150 scientific articles published in peer-reviewed medical and scientific journals and wrote and published four chapters in medical books.
The University of Wisconsin Medical School appointed Dr. Sautter clinical assistant professor in the surgery department. He served as assistant dean for clinical affairs from 1984 to 1986.
Survivors include three sons, Daniel R. and Mark A. of Eau Claire, Wis., and Michael G. of Chili, Wis.; a daughter, Ann E. Sautter of Madison, Wis.; and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and an infant daughter, Lynn Marie.
