Harry Johnson Sr.
ATWOOD, Kan. -- Harry A. Johnson Sr., 84, of Atwood, Kan., died Oct. 31, 2000, at Atwood.
Services were at Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church in Atwood.
Williams Funeral Chapel of Atwood was in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Johnson was born on April 11, 1916, at Marquette to Otto and Lizzie (Wisby) Johnson. He graduated from Marquette High School in 1935.
He married
Dorothy Ammons on Oct. 15, 1944, at Duncan, Okla.
He was a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps at Halsey, helping build the Nebraska National Forest. He was a World War II veteran. He lived at Aurora, Seward and Milford before retiring to Zapata, Texas, where he operated a recreational vehicle camp. They moved to Atwood in April 1999.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Harry Johnson Jr. of Lincoln; two daughters, Betty (Mrs. Lyle) Gross of North Platte and Sharon (Mrs. Anthony) Horinek of Atwood; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Irene Warren of Aurora.
Jim Tuma
James T. "Jim" Tuma, 85, of Grand Island died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at Lakeview Nursing/Rehab Center in Grand Island.
Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Tom Ryan officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Tuma was born Jan. 11, 1916, in Elba to Jake and Mary Tuma. He attended District 52 school in Farwell.
He married
Lena M. Kay on Aug. 21, 1939, in Grand Island, after which he farmed for a few years in southwestern Hall County. He was employed by the Union Pacific Railroad. He later was employed as a carpenter for Sothman Lumber Co. for 12 years until his retirement in 1963 due to failing health.
He was a member of the Protestant faith.
He enjoyed fishing, gardening, outdoors, flowers, Nebraska football and listening to polkas and Bohemian music. He also enjoyed saving and collecting items and spending time with his grandchildren. In his spare time he would entertain the residents at Lakeview with music when he entered the nursing home.
Survivors include his wife, Lena Tuma of Grand Island; two daughters, Florence (Mrs. Stanley) Grudzinski of St. Libory and Delores (Mrs. Norm) Bulin of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; one brother, Leonard Tuma of Farwell; and five sisters, Clara Pawlowski of Farwell, Gustie Albers of Spokane, Wash., Bessie Senseney of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Josephine Brahatcek and Josephine Brahatcek, both of St. Paul.
He was preceded in death by one grandchild, four brothers and five sisters.
Dorothy Wagner-Wells
Dorothy M. Wagner-Wells, 95, of Grand Island died March 22, 2001, at Lakeview Nursing/Rehab Center.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Dale Wilson
Dale A. Wilson, 94, of Grand Island died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the hospice program of St. Francis Medical Center.
Mr. Wilson was born Jan. 7, 1907, on a farm near Glade, Kan., to William T. and Augusta (Gaarde) Wilson. He attended rural school near Glade and graduated from Phillipsburg, Kan., High School in 1926. He attended Hays State College in Kansas.
In 1927, he moved to Grand Island, where he worked at the Justice Candy Co., Fairmont Creamery Company and Lingeman Refrigeration and Wiring. He retired in 1969.
He married
Mollie Ditter on June 19, 1929. They lived in Grand Island. Mrs. Wilson died in 1983.
He was a member of the Eagles Club and Platte-Deutsche.
He enjoyed hunting and fishing and was a Nebraska sports fan. He also enjoyed traveling throughout the Western United States.
Survivors include two daughters, LaVonne (Mrs. LeRoy) Moats of Washington and Arlene Feyen of Atchison, Kan.; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; four brothers; and one infant sister.
Florence Dertien
RAVENNA -- Florence Dertien, 87, of Ravenna died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Colorado Springs, Colo.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna. The Rev. Doug DeNeui will officiate. Burial will be in the Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna.
Visitation is planned prior to service time at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the Congregational Church or the Ravenna Senior Center.
Mrs. Dertien was born Jan. 1, 1914, in Platte, S.D., to Ed and Dora (Wiersma) Voetberg. She graduated from Platte High School and attended Springfield College for one year. She taught school in South Dakota for four years.
On Aug. 29, 1935, she married
Charles Dertien in Grand Island. The couple lived in Ravenna, where they owned and operated the Gambles Store. They later owned and operated the Golden Rule. Mr. Dertien died on June 3, 1968.
Mrs. Dertien was a member of the Congregational Church, where she had served as the church secretary, Rebekahs, P.E.O., Ravenna Chamber of Commerce, American Legion Auxiliary and was active in the Ravenna Senior Center.
Survivors include two sons, Marvin of Vancouver, Wash., and Donald of Colorado Springs, Colo.; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Ralph of Platte, S.D.; and two sisters, Helen Gray of Platte, S.D., and Doris McGehee of Bellevue, Ill.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Andy.
Russell Dockhorn
ORD -- Russell G. Dockhorn, 80, of Ord died Wednesday, March 21, 2001, at the Sargent Nursing Center in Sargent.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Ord Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. Don Schauda officiating. Burial will be in the Arcadia City Cemetery.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Leukemia Society of American or the Westcott Baptist Church.
Mr. Dockhorn was born July 28, 1920, on the family farm near Comstock to Glenn R. and Mae (Woodworth) Dockhorn. The family moved to farms in Custer County near Arcadia, where he attended Westside and Ohme grade schools. He attended Arcadia High School for three years and then worked on the family farm. He later moved with his parents back to the family farm near Comstock.
He married
Irene Shepperd in Broken Bow on March 25, 1939. They worked as tenant farmers in northern Iowa for 11 years.
In 1950, they returned to Comstock, where he worked with his father in the carpentry business. Later he was custodian at Comstock School until they moved to Ord, where he was superintendent of transportation for the Ord Public Schools until his retirement in 1982.
He attended the Westcott Baptist Church. He enjoyed retirement, helping with carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, mechanics, farming, gardening and woodworking.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, Glenn Dockhorn of Comstock and Darren Dockhorn of Grand Island; two daughters, Janice Sutton of Hoyt, Kan., and Charlene (Mrs. Victor) Green of Allen; 11 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers, Gerald of Lincoln and Darr of Grand Island; and four sisters, Ora Mae Zahn of Keizor, Ore., Freda Kokes of Ord, Joan Weber of Loveland, Colo., and Pearl Norton of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Lewis, Anson and Milo; two sisters, Grace Sherbeck and Gwendolyn Cunningham; and one granddaughter.
