Gayle Anderson
ALBION -- Gayle D. Anderson, 66, of Albion died Saturday, May 12, 2001, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Larry Sydow will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery in Albion.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion. Memorials are suggested to the family or the donor's choice.
Mr. Anderson was born on September 12, 1934, to Albert and Ada (Cooper) Anderson on a farm west of Anselmo. As a boy, he moved with his family to the Brewster area where he attended country school near Brewster, graduating from Brewster High School in 1952.
He attended the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for two years before entering the U.S. Navy in August of 1954. After receiving his flight training at Pensecola, Fla., and Corpus Christi Tex., he served as a pilot aboard the aircraft carrier USS Kearsarge in the Pacific. Following his tour, he was honorably discharged in 1958 and returned to Nebraska to begin crop spraying.
He married
Marion Smithson in 1962. The couple lived near Broken Bow and later in Elgin and Neligh before moving to Albion in 1968.
He married
Carol Henrichs on Dec. 13, 1985, at Albion. He retired in 2000 following his 40th year of agriculture spraying business. Later that year, he moved into the Fullerton Manor.
He enjoyed traveling and camping and was a long-time member of the Nebraska Aviation Trades Association.
Survivors include his wife Carol; two sons, Kevin of Albion and Dwaine Anderson of Newman Grove; one daughter, Carmen Johnson of Newman Grove; two sisters, Shirley Hartley of Lakewood, Colo., and Lorainne Duncan of Yakima, Wash.; and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one son, Farron.
Lucille Burch
FULLERTON -- Lucille E. Burch, 83, of Fullerton died Friday, May 11, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Clarence McConkey will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday with a 7 p.m. Eastern Star service at Palmer Funeral Home.
Margie McCarty
ST. EDWARD -- Margie McCarty, 97, of St. Edward, died Saturday, May 12, 2001 at her home.
Services are pending with Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward.
'Pappy' Zaruba, 67, Truck Driver
FULLERTON -- Carroll "Pappy" Zaruba, 67, of Fullerton died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Sterling, Colo.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Peters Catholic Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Don Cleary will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Catholic cemetery with military rites.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday with a 6 p.m. scripture service and rosary at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton.
Mr. Zaruba was born Dec. 30, 1933, to Edward and Mildred E. (Turner) Zaruba in Boone County. He grew up on a farm and attended District 14 in north central Nance County and attended Fullerton High School, graduating in 1951. He then attended Doane College from 1951 to 1952 where he played fullback on the conference championship football team.
He served in the Marine Corps where he was stationed at Korea from 1952 to 1954. After the service he attended the University of Nebraska where he played halfback/fullback and linebacker. In 1960, he was drafted by the Dallas Texans (later the Kansas City Chiefs) and played one year as a defensive cornerback.
He married
Rose Knopik on Oct. 27, 1960, in Lincoln where they lived. In 1972, they moved to Omaha where he worked as an operations manager for Lowrey Trucking. In 1978, they moved to Fullerton where he owned and operated Pappys Station until 1993. Throughout the years, the continued to truck, trucking for 30 years. He presently was working for Lindsay Transportation.
He was a member of St. Peters Catholic Church in Fullerton and the American Legion Post 151 in Fullerton and the N Club in Lincoln. He enjoyed hunting and driving truck.
Survivors include his wife; three sons, Wayne Gilson and Terry Gilson, both of Schuyler and Scott Zaruba of Norfolk; two daughters, Sue (Mrs. Daniel) Stetz of Fullerton and Jackie (Mrs. Scott) Crabtree of Stewartsville, N.J.; three brothers, Gary Zaruba of Kearney, Charles Zaruba of Julesburg, Colo., and Patrick Zaruba of Albion; three sisters, Theresa (Mrs. Ted) Wieser of North Bend, Lorraine (Mrs. Allen) Iverson of Broken Bow and Louise Schank of Fullerton.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Chuck Gilson and an infant Steve and one sister, Kristina Zaruba.
'Bob' Goetsch 76, Bosselman's employee Robert "Bob" E. Goetsch, 76, of Grand Island died Dec. 28, 2000, at St. Francis Skilled Nursing Unit following a lengthy illness.
Graveside memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cedarview cemetery in Doniphan with the Rev. Virgil Taylor officiating.
There will be no visitation. Mr. Goetsch was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to the family or St. Francis Hospice.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Goetsch was born March 22, 1924, at Grand Island to Frank and Pauline (Perky) Goetsch. The family moved to Doniphan, where he graduated from high school.
He served in the U.S. Army during World War II in Normandy, France, Rhineland and Central Europe from May 1943 to December 1945.
He married
Florence Keithley on July 14, 1946, in Cheyenne. He worked for the Union Pacific Railroad in Cheyenne and the Grand Island Fairmont Creamery and Feed Mill. He retired from Bosselman's after 28 years of employment there.
He was a member of the United Veterans Club and former member of Isaac Walton League.
His hobbies included airboating on the Platte River, his aquariums, woodworking, watching western movies and reading western books.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Penny Sue (Mrs. Gary) Greenlee of Redding, Calif.; one son, Douglas Goetsch of Grand Island; two grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harold of Laconner, Wash., Tom of Apache Junction, Ariz., and Glen of Lincoln; and two sisters, Frances Creech of Cheyenne, Wyo., and Imogene Brown of San Antonio, Texas.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Jim Goetsch.
'Bob' Rombach, 76, Retired Auto Mechanic
Robert "Bob" L. Rombach, 76, of Grand Island died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home with the Rev. Del Roper officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery with military honors by Fort Riley Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Rombach was born Dec. 23, 1924, at Haskell, Okla., to Joseph and Verda (Martin) Rombach. He was raised and received his education in Haskell, graduating from Haskell High School in 1943.
He entered the U.S. Army in June 1943, serving in the 35th Infantry during World War II. He was honorably discharged in November 1945.
He married
Mary A. Phillips on Oct. 10, 1945, in Coweta, Okla. They lived in Grand Island since December 1945. He began working as an auto mechanic at Arrow Pontiac. He owned and operated Rombach Auto Service until retiring in 1985, due to health problems. Mrs. Rombach died on Feb. 4, 1997.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, the American Legion and the Platt-Duetsche.
His hobbies include hunting, fishing and spending time with his family.
Survivors include one son, Chuck of Bellevue; two daughters, Carol McCaw of Ralston and Deb Rombach of Grand Island; four grandchildren; and two brothers, Joe of Miami, Okla., and Jack of Littleton, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Dave Rombach; a brother, Charles.
Earnest Whiting, 91, RETIRED FARMER
ORD -- Earnest Whiting, 91, of Ord died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at the Burwell Community Memorial Health Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ord Christian Church with the Rev. Michael Chase officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery in Scotia.
Visitation is from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Burwell Community Memorial Health Center.
Mr. Whiting was born Oct. 25, 1909, at Horace to Roy and Grace (Salter) Whiting. He received his education at Horace School.
He married
Lenore A. Hoagland at Valentine on Feb. 13, 1932. The couple lived in Horace for close to four years. They moved to LaGrange, Ill., where he worked in a factory for 13 years. In 1949, they returned to Horace, where they farmed until retirement in 1978. They lived in Ord after retirement. Mrs. Whiting died Nov. 6, 1995. Mr. Whiting continued to live in Ord until October 1999, when he became a resident of the Burwell Community Memorial Health Center.
His hobbies include fishing and gardening.
Survivors include his two sisters, Esther Winslow of Indiana and Delight Gothard of Chicago; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife and daughter, Joanne Keown.
