Naomi Armstrong, 89, Musician, teacher, gardener
LINCOLN -- Naomi D. Armstrong, 89, of Lincoln died Thursday, May 3, 2001.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the First Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow with the Rev. Gene Goben officiating. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church.
Mrs. Armstrong was born April 26, 1912, near Anselmo to Earl and Caroline Hudson. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Broken Bow High School in 1928. She taught country school for some time.
She married
Clifford Armstrong on Sept. 24, 1932.
As a pianist, she spent much of her life teaching and directing. She served as church organist and choir director at the First Presbyterian Church in Broken Bow for more than 30 years.
She and her husband played for many "barn dances" in the 1930s and 1940s. She would play piano and Mr. Armstrong played fiddle. In the 1940', she did her part in war effort by pumping gas and doing the books at the Co-op in Broken Bow. She was part of the vocal quartet called "The Harmonettes, " which performed regularly in the area during that time.
Her hobbies included reading, doing crafts, knitting, crocheting and tatting. She also liked working in her flower gardens, making chokecherry jelly, cookies and homemade pickles.
Survivors include her two sons, Gene and Rod, both of Lincoln; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; her stepmother, Thelma Hudson of Broken Bow; and stepbrother, Gaylor Hudson of Shakopee, Minn.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one brother, Paul Hudson; and her sister, Edna Hudson.
Joan Carstens, 70, Rockville native
OMAHA -- Joan V. Carstens, 70, of Omaha died Thursday, April 19, 2001.
Services were held April 24 at St. Vincent dePaul Catholic Church with the Rev. Dennis A. Hanneman officiating. Burial took place in the Resurrection cemetery in Omaha.
Mrs. Carstens was born Jan. 16, 1931, at Rockville to Camilia and Sam Andersen. She attended Rockville Grade School until 1943, when she moved with her family to Omaha. There she graduated from South High School. Following graduation, she was employed by the Travelers Insurance Co.
On Sept. 2, 1950, she married
Robert L. Carstens. After raising their three children, she served as accountant and executive secretary to the Sunset Valley County Club in Omaha for 23 years. After a bout with cancer, she retired from the club in February 2000.
Her hobbies included baking, sewing, polka music, books, flowers, playing cards and spending time at their cabin on Sherman Reservoir.
Survivors include her husband; three sons, Richard, Rob and Terry, all of Omaha; seven grandchildren; and one sister, Dolores (Mrs. Gilbert) Carstens of Omaha.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Victoria Youngson, 94, Retired farmer
MINDEN -- Victoria M. Youngson, 94, of Minden died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at the Long Term Care Unit of Kearney County Health Services.
Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Minden cemetery with the Rev. Bill Hunter officiating.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Layton Funeral Home in Minden.
Memorials are suggested to the Minden United Methodist Church or the Minden Opera House.
Mrs. Youngson was born Dec. 31, 1906, to Swedish immigrants, Charles and Hilda Johnson in Norman. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Minden High School at the age of 16. Following high school she taught for three years in a country school in Kearney County.
She married
Charles R. Youngson on May 21, 1926. They lived on a farm near Holdrege for a short time before moving to Norman, where they continued farming for many years. In 1944, they moved to Minden where they had lived since that time.
In addition to farming, she worked with her husband to help run livestock sale barns in Minden, Crete and Hastings. Following retirement from farming in the early 1970s, they traveled to Scandinavia and many other countries throughout the world. Mr. Youngson died in 1992.
Mrs. Youngson was a longtime member of the Rebekah Lodge, Eastern Star, American Legion Auxiliary, Danish Brotherhood and the Minden United Methodist Church.
Her hobbies included duplicate bridge, needlepoint and antique collecting.
Survivors include one daughter, Renee (Mrs. Carl) Amick of Doniphan; and one grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband; one son, Charles; one grandchild; and two sisters.
Ella Hutchison
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. -- Ella M. Hutchison, 85, of Downers Grove, Ill., formerly of Central City, died Thursday, May 3, 2001, at Fairview Baptist Home in Downers Grove.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Hallowell & James Funeral Home in Downers Grove, Ill. Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Rose Hill cemetery in Palmer with the Rev. Cliff Reynolds officiating.
Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until service time Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Association.

Shirley Miller, 75, Retired UNL Professor
SYCAMORE, Ill. -- Shirley B. Miller, 75, of Sycamore, Ill., formerly of Lincoln, died Wednesday, April 25, 2001, at DeKalb, Ill.
Graveside services were held April 30 at Lincoln Memorial Park cemetery in Lincoln with the Rev. Dr. Clarke Mundhenke officiating.
Roper & Sons Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to DeKalb County Nursing Home Foundation.
Mrs. Miller was born Oct. 27, 1925, in Ravenna to Joseph C. and Jesse (Humpal) Bacon.
She was a retired assistant professor at the University of Nebraska at Lincoln and was a successful artist.
Survivors include her son, Jon of Sycamore, Ill; one daughter, Susan (Mrs. Gary) Duven of Appleton, Wis.; and five grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William; and one brother, Joey Bacon.
Carl Schlingman, 77, Retired highway worker
MERRITT ISLAND, Fla. -- Carl C. Schlingman, 77, of Merritt Island, Fla., died May 3, 2001.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at North Merritt Island United Methodist Church in Merritt Island. Burial will be in the Florida National Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the North Merritt Island United Methodist Church or Wuesthoff Brevard Hospice.
Mr. Schlingman was born August 4, 1923, in Omaha to Carl Christian and Maude (Chesley) Schlingman.
He was retired from the Colorado Highway Department after 30 years.
He was a member of the North Merritt Island United Methodist Church.
Survivors include his wife, Peggy; two sons, Steven of Merritt Island, Fla., and Jim of Yankton, S.D.; one brother, William Schlingman; six grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Kathleen Hoppens.
