Opal Machan
Provo, Utah -- Opal Lee Kixmiller Machan, 79, of Provo, Utah, formerly of Grand Island, died Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2001.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Slate Canyon Fifth Ward in Utah. Burial and graveside services will follow the funeral at the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Walker Family Mortuary in Provo, Utah.
Mrs. Machan was born March 13, 1921, to Julius John and Edna Lena (Albrecht) Kixmiller in Weatherford. She moved with her family in 1922 to a farm near Carson, Iowa. She graduated from Carson High School in May 1937 at age 16.
She married
Donald Louis Machan on June 5, 1937. They moved to Grand Island where she worked for Paine Monument Co. and also worked for the Grand Island Daily Independent for 10 years.
She became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in 1951. On Aug. 29, 1963, their marriage was solemnized at the LDS Logan, Utah temple. The couple was married
for 62 years.
In 1967, they moved to Provo where she worked 19 years for the electrical engineering department at Brigham Young University. She retired in August 1986.
Survivors include two brothers, Renal Kixmiller of Omaha and Donald Kixmiller of Kansas City, Mo.; one son, Gary of Salt Lake City; five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Grace Eaton
Grace H. Eaton, 423 W. 13th St., died Saturday, January 23, 2000, at her home. Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Thomas Kircher
Thomas A. Kircher, 44, of Grand Island died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. James Cooper officiating.
Visitation is from 10 a.m. until service time Tuesday at the funeral home.
Following the service, Mr. Kircher will be cremated. The burial of cremains will be at a later date in the Indianola cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Kircher was born on June 16, 1955, at McCook to Roger and Marcella (Yager) Kircher. He attended schools in Saronville; Sutton; Alma, Mo.; and Marshall, Minn. Following his education, he worked as a laborer in construction, meat packing and grain elevators. He also was a nursery worker for the Upper Blue Natural Resource District.
He enjoyed nature and liked fishing, gardening and being outdoors.
Survivors include his parents of Grand Island; two brothers, Gary of Endicott, N.Y., and Rex of York; and three sisters, Gloria Stett of McCool Junction, Marcia Dubord of Friend and Julie Cannafax of Kansas City, Kan.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents.
Irene Carpenter
BURWELL -- Irene I. Carpenter, 92, of Burwell died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
Services are pending with Eberle-Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Joan Forbes
PALMER -- Joan F. Forbes, 68, of Palmer died Sunday, Jan. 23, 2000, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Palmer United Methodist Church with the Rev. Ken West officiating. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery.
Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home in Palmer.
Lisa Garrett
HORDVILLE -- Lisa D. Garrett, 16, of Hordville died on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, as the result of injuries received in an accident near Hordville.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Central City with the Rev. Nelson Newman officiating.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the church with a rosary and scripture service at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
She was born on March 4, 1983, in Aurora to Bill and Shelli (Placke) Garrett. She lived in the Polk and Hordville areas all of her life and was a junior at Polk-Hordville High School in Polk. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in York.
She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church in Central City and attended youth group at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Aurora.
She was active in high school volleyball, basketball, track (1999 state qualifier), band, speech team, flag corps and one-act plays. She was a member of National Honor Society, student council and was selected for All-State Honor Band. She was a member of the South Central USA Volleyball Association and the Grand Island Junior USA Volleyball Association. She played on the Hampton 16-and-under softball team and the Central City 18-and-under softball team.
She loved playing the flute and piano.
Survivors include her parents, Bill and Shelli Garrett of Hordville; two brothers, Jeremy and Jason, both of Hordville; one sister, Lindsay, of Hordville; her grandparents, Marilyn Placke of St. Libory and Orville and Marj Garrett of Hordville; her great-grandmother, Bessie (Mrs. Marvin) Garrett of Randolph; and a special friend, Tony Cantrell of Fairmont.
She was preceded in death by her grandfather, William Placke Jr.
'Andy' Goc
LOUP CITY -- Andrew "Andy" Goc, 82, of Loup City died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2000, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City with the Rev. Reginald A. Urban officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City.
Visitation is from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Monday at the church with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service. Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Goc was born on April 15, 1917, on the family farm near Boelus to Ignatz and Barbara (Kosmicki) Goc. As a child, he moved with his family to the Ashton area, where he received his early education. As a young man, he farmed and worked on the construction of Kingsley Dam at Ogallala.
He married
Evangeline A. "Van" Hurt on Oct. 25, 1943, at Ashton. They lived and farmed in various areas of Sherman County until 1962, when they moved to a farm southeast of Loup City. He continued to farm and also worked for the local John Deere dealership.
Mrs. Goc died on April 28, 1993. In 1999 he moved to the Rose Lane Home in Loup City for several months. The past two months, he had lived at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
He enjoyed polka music and mechanic work. He was a member of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church.
Survivors include one son, Kenneth Goc of Loup City; two daughters, Sharon (Mrs. Frank) Koperski of Farwell and Patricia (Mrs. Mark) Eurek of Loup City; 14 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Angie Hurt of Grand Island and MaryAnn (Mrs. Gene) Gesiriech of Lincoln.
Other than his wife, he was preceded in death by one granddaughter and two brothers, Clarence and Jerome.
Eva Hawkins
LITCHFIELD -- Eva A. Hawkins, 91, of Litchfield died Friday, Jan. 21, 2000, at Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church in Mason City with the Rev. Victor Crawford officiating. Burial will be in the Mason City Cemetery.
Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church in Mason City or the Good Samaritan Center in Ravenna.
Mrs. Hawkins was born on Jan. 13, 1909, on a farm west of Mason City in Custer County to Bert and Ellen (Peterson) Amsberry. The family moved to Oregon when she was young, and after returning to Nebraska, she attended Algernon and Mason City public schools. She was baptized and confirmed at Evangelical Zion Lutheran Church eight miles south of Mason City.
She married
George H. Hawkins on Sept. 27, 1927, at Bushnell. They farmed for two years east of Mason City, then moved to a farm on the Basin for the next 16 years. They moved to a farm south of the Basin for the next 20 years.
The couple moved to Litchfield in February 1966. Mr. Hawkins died in October of 1983. Mrs. Hawkins continued to live in Litchfield.
She enjoyed working in her garden and flowers. She also sewed and did fancy crochet work. After the membership of Basin Church dissolved, she became a friend of the Litchfield United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one son, Vern of Grand Island; one daughter, Jennie Fread of Litchfield; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by two sisters and one brother.
