Joshua Robertson
Joshua J. Robertson, infant son of Corey and Clara Robertson, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at birth at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Harvest Time Baptist Church. The Rev. Rob Inge will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Friday at Kleine Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family in Joshua's name.
Survivors include his parents; three brothers, Keith, Eric and Larry, all at home; a sister, Laura at home; his grandparents, Jim and Ella Lowry of Palmer, Linda Crocker of Lincoln and William Robertson of Grand Island; and a great-grandmother, Noma Cargill of Grand Island.
Francis Ackman
NORFOLK -- Francis A. Ackman, 71, of Norfolk died Saturday, Aug. 18, at the Community Pride care home in Battle Creek.
Services will be at 9 a.m. Sept. 1 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Norfolk. The Rev. Jim Keiker will officiate. Burial will follow in the Raeville Cemetery.
Mr. Ackman was born April 10, 1930, on a farm near Raeville to William B. and Mary (Baumgartner) Ackman. He attended Raeville school. He served in the U.S. Air Force as a staff sergeant during the Korean Conflict from 1955 to 1959. He return to farm in the Oakdale-Elgin area.
He married
Sharon Podliska in September 1961. They later moved to Norfolk where he was employed at Sherwood Medical until his retirement in 1995.
He was married
to Dorothy Perry at the time of his death.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1644 in Norfolk.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; three sons, David of Norfolk, William R. of Kansas City, Mo., and Ted of Atchison, Kan.; a daughter and son-in-law, Colleen and Shannon Thompson of Norfolk; seven grandchildren; and three brothers, Duane (Dick) of Greeley, Herman J. of Auburndale, Wis., and Jim of Silverdale, Wash.
He was preceded in death by two brothers and an infant son.
Gary Knothe
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. -- Gary Knothe, 60, of Grand Junction, Colo., died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lutheran Church and School of Messiah in Grand Junction.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Callahan-Edfast Mortuary in Grand Junction.
Memorial are suggested to Lutheran Church and School of Messiah in Grand Junction in memory of Gary Knothe or Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (designate Hairy Cell Leukemia Research Foundation), Rocky Mountain Chapter in Denver.
Mr. Knothe was born Dec. 24, 1940, at St. Paul. He lived and was active there during his youth. He excelled in many sports, social events and won awards for his ability to dance, especially the polka. He was named as an all-state Nebraska football player his junior and senior years in high school. He was actively involved in scouting and became an Eagle Scout. He graduated from St. Paul High in 1959 and went into the Army for two years. During this time he traveled throughout Europe.
Upon his return, he entered college at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and graduated in 1967.
He continued his travels during his career in the oil field, working both off shore and inland. He spent time in Dubai, Singapore and throughout the Middle East, as well as several states in the U.S. before settling in Grand Junction, Colo., in 1979 with his family. Mr. Knothe was active in his church at Messiah Lutheran.
He enjoyed the outdoors, Nebraska Bowl games, hunting, golf, reading and an easy stroll around the block.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Melissa and Rick Thompson of Molina, Colo., and Terra and Steven Vowles of Denver; seven grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Ken and Carol Knothe of Ontario, Ore.; and a sister and brother-in-law, Elizabeth and Paul Manthey of Milwaukee.
Verna Madsen
WINDSOR, Calif. -- Verna M. Madsen, 80, of Windsor, Calif., died Aug. 8, 2001, at her daughter's home in Windsor.
Memorials are suggested to Nancy Madsen for the Verna Madsen Fund.
Mrs. Madsen was born Sept. 11, 1920, at Lincoln to Floyd E. and Florence E. Umberger. She graduated from Lincoln High School and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
She was a former officer of Umberger's Mortuary and Umberger-Sheaff Mortuaries, Minden farmer's wife, homemaker and community servant. She was diabetic double amputee.
In Sonoma County, Calif., she was statistician for FISH, Friends In Service Here, a program to feed the hungry; a member of Advisory Council for IHSS in Home Support Services; and embroidered Bible quilts.
She was a former active member of UNL Alumni, Danish Sisterhood, Lincoln Grace United Methodist Church secretary, Minden United Methodist Sunday School superintendent, Ecumenical Group in United Church Women, Nebraska Polled Hereford Association, Minden Order of Eastern Star officer and state Order of Eastern Star secretary.
She volunteered four hours a day four times a week for three years at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island while her husband, Andrew, was hospitalized there.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Nancy Lee Madsen of Windsor, Margaret and Bill Coleman of Portales, N.M., Ellen and Brian McBride of Glendale, Ariz., and Florence "Betsy" Flynn of Minden; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Elsie S. Teague and Betty and Roy A. Sheaff, all of Lincoln and Lois and Darold Rohrbaugh of Estes Park, Colo.
She was preceded in death by her two husbands, Donald E. Burke and Andrew E. Madsen; a son-in-law, Mike Flynn; a grandchild; a great-grandchild; and a sister, Carol Upson.
Maxine Howard
Maxine S. Howard, 75, of 404 Woodland Drive died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday at Butler-Volland Chapel in Hastings with the Rev. Matt Nieman officiating. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery in Hastings.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Howard was born on Feb. 26, 1924, in Hastings to Emory and Bessie Shriver. She was raised in Hastings, graduated from Hastings High School and later from Hastings Business College. She worked for LT&T;, now Aliant Communications.
She married
Glenn Howard on Jan. 14, 1944. Mr. Howard died on Nov. 12, 1989. Mrs. Howard moved to Grand Island in 1996. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hastings.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn (Mrs. David) Carrier of Plano, Texas; a son, Gary Howard of Grand Island; two grandchildren; and two sisters, Irene Bunker and Ethel Sovey, both of Lincoln.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother.
Norma Miller
Norma A. Miller, 76, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at her home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m., Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Miller was born on Dec. 14, 1922, at Burr to Fred and Belle (Burrill) Bunch. She grew up and was educated at Cairo and graduated from Cairo High School in 1940.
She married
Leonard V. Miller on Sept. 28, 1940, at Smith Center, Kan. The couple lived in Cairo, Johnson Lake and later Grand Island. She had been a seamstress for Bridal World in Grand Island.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Eagles Auxiliary 378, Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 1347 and the Does.
Survivors include one daughter, Jolynn R. (Mrs. Donald) Scholz of Grand Island; one son, Rodney V. Miller of Houston; six grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Florence (Mrs. Merrill) Nannen of Omaha.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Gladys Walklin
Gladys Walklin of Grand Island died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
