U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Stewart Oliver

Stewart L. Oliver, 82, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Aug. 22, 2000, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. William J. Forbes will officiate. Burial will be in the Shelton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the Grand Generation Center or the donor's choice.

Mr. Oliver was born on Jan. 9, 1918, at Shelton to Edward and Ethel (Jones) Oliver. He was educated in a rural district school near Shelton. He farmed with his father and brothers.

He served in the U.S. Army from Jan. 7, 1942, to Sept. 24, 1945.

He married Lorene Spracklen on Feb. 9, 1946, at St. Louis. The couple lived in the Shelton area. They moved to Grand Island in 1960. He was a carpenter for the local carpenter's union working for Lacy Building and Supply and was in the maintenance department at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. He retired in 1980.

He was a member of the All Faiths Chapel at the Grand Island Veterans Home. He volunteered at the Grand Generation Center and various places when needed.

He played cards, enjoyed reading western stories, bingo, fishing and hunting.

Survivors include his wife; four brothers, Gilbert and Nelson of Shelton, George of Gibbon and Kenneth of Alexandria, La.; and three sisters, Roberta Burmood and Ann Delaet, both of Lexington, and Jo Oliver of Oxford.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Skert and Lucille Taylor; and one brother, Everett Oliver.

Jeffery Couton

GREELEY -- Jeffery Allen Couton, 36, of Greeley died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, as a result of an automobile accident in Howard County.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley. The Rev. Gerald Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in the Greeley Methodist Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with a rosary at 7 p.m., Friday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

T.J. Finn and Sons Funeral Home of Greeley is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Couton was born on June 14, 1964, at Grand Island to James and Jeannette (Hansen) Couton of Loup City. He attended District 2 Elementary School at Austin and graduated from Loup City High School in 1983.

He married Esther Jane Moore on Sept. 9, 1995, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley.

He enjoyed restoring and working on old cars and woodworking, especially crafting wooden model airplanes. He loved to fly with his dad and was a member of the Nebraska Flying Farmers and Ranchers.

He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Justin Allen of Greeley; his parents, James and Jan Couton of Gilmar, Texas; one sister, Jacqueline Couton of Honey Grove, Texas; and his grandparents, Sherman and Helen Hansen of Dannebrog.

He was preceded in death by an infant brother and his grandparents, William and Hazel Couton.

Maude Forney

ALBION -- Maude M. Forney, 99, of Albion died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Albion. The Rev. Terry Otto will officiate. Burial will be in Rose Hill cemetery at Albion.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Lelia Hess

GIBBON -- Lelia Bernice Hess, 101, formerly of Shelton, died Wednesday, Aug. 23, 2000, at the Good Samaritan Center in Gibbon.

Services are pending at Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon and Shelton.

Helen Chesnut

SCOTTSBLUFF -- Helen M. Zimmerman Chesnut, 80, of Scottsbluff died Sunday, Aug. 20, 2000, at the Regional West Medical Center in Scottsbluff.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Scottsbluff. The Rev. Lewis Warren will officiate. Entombment will follow the services.

Visitation will be before services Thursday at Jolliffe Funeral Home.

A memorial has been established to Prairie Haven Hospice.

Mrs. Chesnut was born on May 5, 1920, in Grand Island to Oscar and Abby (Battles) Kensinger. She grew up and graduated from high school in Grand Island.

She married Lloyd C. Zimmerman on Feb. 28, 1939, in Grand Island. They moved in 1955 to Scottsbluff, where they owned and operated Zimmerman's Electric Inc. She was the accounts manager.

She married Dr. Robert Chesnut on Oct. 6, 1978, in Scottsbluff.

She was a member of St. Andrew's Episcopal Church in Scottsbluff. She was very active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and served one term as state chairwoman of the VFW Auxiliary of Nebraska while living in Grand Island. She was a member of Dome Rock Chapter 215, Order of the Eastern Star, participated in numerous bridge clubs and was a past board member of the Homestead Halfway House in Scottsbluff.

Survivors include her husband, Robert of Redding, Calif.; one daughter, Linda (Mrs. Jim) Hall of Fort Collins, Colo.; one son, Jim Zimmerman of Scottsbluff; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Les Kensinger of Everett, Wash.; and one sister, Irene Jemison of Grand Island.

She was preceded in death by her first husband and five brothers.

Helen Strong

STUART -- Helen Myrtle Strong, 86, of Stuart died Aug. 17, 2000, at Parkside Manor in Stuart.

Services were on Tuesday at Faith Community Church in O'Neill. The Rev. Paul Harder officiated. Burial was in the O'Neill Prospect Cemetery.

Biglin's Mortuary of O'Neill was in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Strong was born on July 17, 1914, in O'Neill to Roy and Maude (Ernst) Cole. She graduated from O'Neill High School.

She married Robert Strong on Feb. 20, 1934, at Long Pine. The couple farmed in the O'Neill area until 1943. They moved to a farm in the Page area until 1947, when they purchased a ranch north of Chambers. They lived there until 1966 and then moved to O'Neill.

After her husband's death in 1992, she lived with her daughter Lois and her husband, Duane, for several years in the Ainsworth area. She had lived at Parkside Manor for the past two and a half years.

She enjoyed Garden Club, quilting, canning, gardening, sewing, flower arrangements, cake decorating, crocheting, knitting, crafts, music and playing piano and mandolin.

She was the church pianist for many years and taught Sunday school and vacation Bible school. She was active in her churches, including Center Union, Page, Pine Creek Family Union, O'Neill Wesleyan, Gideon Bible Society and later Faith Community Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Lois (Mrs. Duane) Lewis of Ainsworth and Demaris (Mrs. Glenn) Summers of Mineral Wells, Texas; three sons, Donald of Chambers, Raymond of McPherson, Kan., and John of Central City; 17 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter of Salem, Ore.; and one sister, Dorothy (Mrs. Walter) Anson of Grand Island.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Marvin.

Alice Bartu

LOS ANGELES -- Alice Bartu, 89, of Los Angeles, formerly of the Comstock and Ord areas, died Saturday, Aug. 19, 2000, at Queen of Angels Hospital in Los Angeles.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Douglas Grove cemetery at Comstock. The Rev. Mark Crist will officiate.

Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
