Glen Carlson
AURORA -- Glen L. Carlson, 79, of Aurora, formerly of Hordville, died on Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at the Memorial Long Term Care in Aurora.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Melvin Loge will officiate. Burial will be in the Hordville Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Carlson was born Nov. 2, 1921, near Hordville to Arvid E. and Clara (Ortegren) Carlson. He received his education at Districts 61 and 94 in Hamilton County. After completing his education, he farmed with his father.
He married
Evelyn L. Reed of Aurora on January 17, 1943, in Aurora. The couple farmed in the Hordville area.
In 1961, he went to work for the Farmers Co-op Association at the elevator in Hordville. He remained with them for twenty-five years, retiring in 1986. He then worked for area farmers and at the Aurora Mall.
He lived all of his life in the Hordville community, until moving to Memorial Long Term Care in June of 1994.
He attended the Mamre Evangelical Free Church near Marquette all of his life. He served on the District 61 school board, was a 4-H Leader with the Busy Beaver Beef Club, and was a volunteer fireman for the Hordville Volunteer Fire Department.
He was Santa Claus for the Hordville community for many years. He enjoyed fishing and hunting, and by allowing neighborhood children to go with him, he gave them an opportunity to share in these sports.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Aurora; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Pat of Central City, Larry and Karen of Basset, and Don and Cheryl of Hampton; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; one sister, Erma Habe of Ravenna; and one brother, Gerald Carlson of Lincoln.
He was preceded in death by two infant brothers.
Gail Fisher
BROKEN BOW -- Gail Edward Fisher, 68, of rural Broken Bow died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at his home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Berean Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. Lloyd Lenz will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow cemetery with military honors.
Visitation will be from noon to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the Hyannis High School Scholarship Fund.
Mr. Fisher was born Sept. 15, 1932, in rural Brown County to Lewis Edward and Anna (Jennings) Fisher. When he was young, the family moved to Berwyn where he attended elementary and high school. In 1950, he graduated with the last senior class to attend Berwyn High.
He spent several summers working in hayfields in the Sandhills and after graduating worked for the Lowe Cattle Co. north of Ashby for three years. In 1953, he joined the U.S. Navy and trained as an electronics technician. He served several six month tours aboard ship.
He married
Marilyn Griffith on July 29, 1956, in Broken Bow. They spent the next two years in California while he served shore duty. Following his five years in the Navy, they moved to Lincoln where he enrolled at the University of Nebraska. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in math education in 1962.
In August 1962, they moved to Sargent where he taught at the high school. He attended summer school at UNL and earned a master's degree in school counseling.
In 1968, the family moved to Hyannis where he taught math and physics and served as the high school guidance counselor. He continued in this position for the next 26 years.
In September 1987, he suffered a severe heart attack, which led to a heart transplant on Jan. 1, 1988. In the spring of 1988, he returned to his teaching position until his retirement in 1994 at which time the couple moved to their present home south of Broken Bow.
He was a staunch Republican and die-hard Husker fan. He was a proud member of the Masonic Lodge, the VFW, and the American Legion. He was an avid reader and enjoyed following many sports team. He enjoyed his work, both in education and in nurturing cattle during his retirement. His grandchildren were a source of pleasure and pride for him.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Pam of Broken Bow, Matthew and Donna of Imperial, and Grant and Diane of McCool Junction; seven grandchildren; and three sisters, Bessie Landreth of Sargent, Mary Neel of Issaquah, Wash., and Francis Kraft of Russell, Kan.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Ralph, Howard and Guy; and four infant siblings, Mable, Ada Grace, and twins Max and Maxine.
Wallace Hendrickson
BROKEN BOW -- Wallace Hendrickson, 86, of Broken Bow died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at the Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. Bob Winn and Dr. Charles Spence will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
Lester Hochstetler
HERMAN -- Lester Hochstetler, 67, of Herman died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at the V.A. Nursing Home Care Unit in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Cairo United Methodist Church. The Revs. David Mastin and George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in the Mennonite Church cemetery north of Wood River.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Hochstetler was born May 23, 1934, in Wood River to Ezra and Sadie (Roth) Hochstetler. He grew up in the Wood River and Cairo areas and attended school in Wood River and Cairo. He was baptized into the Mennonite Church and was a member of the Mennonite Faith.
He entered the Army in 1954, serving for nine years in Korea, Germany and various other sites. He was honorably discharged in 1963 and moved back to Grand Island.
He married
Caroline Stahlnecker Christensen on Sept. 23, 1967, in Grand Island. The couple moved to Fort Calhoun.
He married
Tina Wiese in 1984 and the couple lived in Herman.
He enjoyed fishing, camping and restoring old cars.
Survivors include three step-daughters and two step-sons-in-law, Cindy and Bruce Webster, Christine and Mark Webster and Charlotte Koneck, all of Blair; two brothers, Donald of Dannebrog and Roy of Cairo; and one sister and brother-in-law, Doris and Leo Kroll of Cairo.
He was preceded in death by his wife Caroline; one brother, Maynard; and one sister, Mary Asher.
Loraine Livingston
ALBION -- Loraine Maude Livingston, 85, of Albion died Saturday, Sept. 1, 2001, at Harmony Home.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion. The Rev. David L. Ritter will officiate. Burial will be in the Mount Pleasant cemetery in Petersburg.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Livingston was born Dec. 28, 1915, to Will and Sarah (McKay) Totter in Elgin. She grew up on an Antelope County farm where she attended country school east of Elgin and graduated from Elgin High School in 1933.
She married
Elmer Livingston on Oct. 12, 1933, in Bartlett.
The couple lived in Petersburg for six years before moving to Albion where she worked in the dry cleaning businesses for Tony Suchanek and Ted Schlange for 15 years.
She later did housekeeping for the local motel as well as several Albion families.
Following her husband's death in 1980, she moved to Elgin where she lived with her sister until returning to Albion in January 2000. She then moved to Harmony Home.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Bill and JoAnn of Pacheco, Calif., and Duane and Donna of Omaha; one daughter, Patricia Coil of Newman Grove; one sister, Yvonne Wilgocki of Genoa; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one brother, Monte.
Opal Peterson
STROMSBURG -- Opal M. Peterson, 88, of Stromsburg died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at Annie Jeffrey Care Center in Osceola.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the St. Paul Lutheran Church of Osceola. The Rev. Clifford Hoper will officiate. Burial will be in the Osceola Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home.
Mrs. Peterson was born Nov. 11, 1912, in rural Stromsburg to Oscar Carl and Beda (Ahlgren) Fredrickson. She attended Kearney State College.
She married
Kenneth Peterson on Dec. 30, 1936, in Omaha. The couple lived in rural Stromsburg from 1936 to 1988 and in Stromsburg from 1988 to 2001.
She worked as an elementary school teacher and was a member of T.C. W.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Franklin and Beverly of Aquila, Ariz., and Douglas and Wanda of Stromsburg; two sisters, Slyvia Johnson of Stromsburg and Laverne (Mrs. Jim) Dryden of Portland, Ore.; one brother, Marvin Fredrickson, of Polk; five grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 1, 1996; one brother, Ansel Fredrickson; and two sisters, Myrtle and Pearl.
