U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Clarence Heiden

HAMPTON -- Clarence Heiden, 93, of Hampton died Monday, Aug. 27, 2001, at Memorial Long Term in Aurora.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton. The Rev. Loren Cooper will officiate. Burial will be in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.

Mr. Heiden was born Aug. 3, 1908, on his family's farm in rural Hampton to Gustav and Minnie (Rau) Heiden. He was baptized on Aug. 30, 1908, at Zion Lutheran Church by the Rev. Moellering and was confirmed on April 9, 1922, by the Rev. Brommer. He attended Zion Lutheran School through the eighth grade before farming with his father. When he was 13, he won second place in the state spelling contest in Lincoln.

He married Alma M. Dose on April 28, 1935, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton with the Rev. Hugo Degner officiating. The couple farmed one mile north of Zion for nine years and 1Ž2 mile east of Zion for 32 years.

They retired from farming in 1976, when they moved to Hampton, where he continued working as a carpenter for his son, Fred, for several more years. He and his wife were married for 66 years.

He was a lifetime member of Zion Lutheran Church in Hampton, where he served in several offices and sang in the church choir for 52 years. He also sang in the Lutheran Choral Union in York for many years. He served on the Hampton Public School Board.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Mary and Daryl Swanson of Lincoln; two sons and daughters-in-law, Fred and Ann Heiden of Hampton and Ed and Laura Heiden of Sterling; nine grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Frances Klute Rehrs of York and Irene Mundt of Polk.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Norma Budnick and Gertrude Rohde.

Edna Snyder

CAIRO -- Edna Snyder, 89, of Cairo, died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the First Baptist Church in Cairo. The Rev. Eldon Elsberry will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Pleasant cemetery south of Cairo.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church with family receiving friends at that time.

Apfel Funeral Home of Cairo is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Snyder was born April 6, 1912, at Shelton to Herman and Amelia (Hadenfeldt) Klein. She grew up and received her education in the Cairo area. She was baptized on Aug. 3, 1947, at the First Baptist Church in Cairo.

She married Verne W. Snyder on Feb. 14, 1930, in Hall County. The couple lived in Elba for a short time before moving back to Cairo. She worked at the White Spot Cafe in Cairo, Cairo School as a cook and janitor and as on line production at the Ordnance Plant. Her husband died April 8, 1967.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Cairo, serving as treasurer for many years, and Ladies of Mission Circle. She enjoyed watching Nebraska football, crocheting afghans, quilting and baking.

Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Verna R. and Keith Johnson of Lutz, Fla., and Marlene and Bob Crowford of Roseburg, Ore.; two sons and daughters-in-law, Darold and Sue Snyder of Williams, Ore., and Richard and Connie Snyder of Grand Island; 14 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; a sister, Ruth Wiegel of Tucson, Ariz.; and a brother, Clifford Klein of Medford, Ore.

She is preceded in death by an infant daughter, Beradean; two brothers, Orval Klein and Leonard Klein; and a sister, Opal Prouty.

Elsie Little

OMAHA -- Elsie Little, 92, of Omaha died Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at the Lutheran Home in Omaha.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Ord Memorial Chapel in Ord. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be in Mt. Hope cemetery at Scotia.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

John McShannon

ASHLAND -- John McShannon, 87, of Ashland, formerly of Omaha, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at Milder Manor Nursing Home in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at American Lutheran Church (ELCA) in Ashland. The Rev. Lance Lindgren will officiate. Evening services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Marcy Mortuary Chapel in Ashland.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary and one hour prior to services at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the American Lutheran Church or Ashland Senior Citizen Center.

Mr. McShannon was born Nov. 20, 1913, at Bloomfield to Duncan and Anna (Claussen) McShannon. He attended Bloomfield High School.

He married Minnie H. Stark in June 10, 1937, in Yankton, S.D. He was employed at Swartz Ford Garage in Bloomfield and McFayden Ford in Omaha. He retired as a mechanic. His wife died March 8, 1998.

He was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Ashland.

Survivors include four sons and daughters-in-law, Jami McShannon of Frederick, Md., Gary and Venus McShannon and Roger and Sharon McShannon, all of Grand Island, and Neil and Mary McShannon of Omaha; three daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Dale Johnson of Ashland, Judith and Frank Vaccaro of Omaha and Bonnie Hays of Austin, Texas; 27 grandchildren; 37 great-grandchildren; 2 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Moritz McShannon of Redmond, Ore.; and four sisters and brothers-in-law, Evelyn Sharp, Mary Ann and Kenny Gilpatrick, and Betty and John Bauer, all of Louisburg, Kan., and Jeanette and Augie Cappellano of Omaha.

He was preceded in death by his wife; and two brothers, Archie and Duncan McShannon.

'Frank' Nordhues

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA. -- Francis "Frank" J. Nordhues, 90, of St. Petersburg, Fla, died. Sunday, Aug. 26, 2001, at College Harbor in St. Petersburg.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Greeley. The Rev. Gerald Carlson will officiate. Burial will be in Sacred Heard cemetery in Greeley.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. A rosary will be at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

T.J. Finn and Sons Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Suncoast Hospice in Largo, Fla.

Ernest Borgmann

Ernest C. Borgmann, 68, of Grand Island died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.

Services are pending with Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Alma Cordova

Alma Y. Cordova, 27, of Grand Island died Thursday, Aug.16, 2001, at St. Francis Skilled Care Unit.

Services will be at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Curran Funeral Chapel. The Rev. Jose Chavez will officiate with a rosary at 3 p.m. Sunday. Additional services and burial will be at a later date in La Lima Cortes, Honduras.

Memorials are suggested to St. Mary's Cathedral.

Linda Barta

BROKEN BOW -- Linda Barta, 39, of Broken Bow, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Funeral services are pending with Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.

Mabel Brox

BROKEN BOW -- Mabel (Collins) Brox, 94, of Broken Bow, died Wednesday, Aug. 15, 2001, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Don Schauda will officiate. Burial will be in the Mt. Hope cemetery at Sargent.

Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to Eppley Cancer Research Center at the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Mrs. Brox was born Dec. 30, 1906, at Mt. Vernon, S.D., to Clarence and Mary (Stults) Wright. She attended country school near Mt. Vernon and high school at Mitchell, S.D. She also attended Grand Island Commercial College.

She married Milton Collins on June 19, 1933. The couple lived in Broken Bow. In April 1939, they moved to the family farm in the Round Valley Community in Custer County. Mr. Collins died Dec. 24, 1964. She moved to Bellevue, Fla., in 1971.

She married Al Brox in May 1982. The couple lived in Florida. Mr. Brox died in September 1988. She moved to Cave Junction, Ore., in 1996 and lived with her daughter for three years. She has been a resident of Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow for the last two years.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Wayne and Sharon Collins of rural Broken Bow; a daughter, Clara M. Tate of Cave Junction, Ore.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and special friends, Jim and Mary Brox of Lincoln.

She was preceded in death by two husbands and a foster brother.
