Wayne Holoch
Wayne R. Holoch, 78, of Grand Island died Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Lakeview Rehabilitation Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Kleine Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Reich officiating. Burial will be in the Pleasant Ridge cemetery near McCool Junction with military rites by the Ft. Riley, Kan., Honor Guard.
Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Holoch was born Oct. 21, 1922, on a farm east of McCool Junction. He grew up on the farm and attended District 102 School. He enlisted in the United States Army, serving from January 1943 until February 1946 in the Philippines.
He married
Helen Sullivan on Nov. 23, 1944, at Boston. After his discharge, the couple lived on the farm at McCool Junction for 17 years until 1962 when they moved to Boston, where he drove truck for a rum distillery. They moved to Grand Island when he retired in 1988.
He was a member of the American Legion in Grand Island and enjoyed playing golf at Fonner View, watching sports on television and gardening. He also enjoyed spending time with family and friends, traveling with his wife and caring for his two dogs.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and sons-in-law, Diane and Ray Highman of Norwood, Mass., and Nancy and Rick Sweet of Antioch, Calif.; one grandchild; and one sister, Leona Woods of Broken Bow.
Robert Johnstone
Robert J. Johnstone, 83, of Grand Island died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at Wedgewood Care Center.
Graveside Masonic services will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Thomas Nuss officiating.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to Wedgewood Care Center.
Mr. Johnstone was born July 31, 1917, in Straiton, Scotland, to James and Shara (Ferguson) Johnstone. He received his education in Galloway, Scotland, later attending agricultural college in 1934. He served in the British Home Guard during World War II.
He lived in various communities, where he sold and exported Scottish cattle. Mr. Johnstone was employed by George F. Daniels Co. in California from 1952 to 1959, the British Livestock Exports from 1959 to 1968, and the Galloway Cattle in Rapid City, S.D., from 1969 to 1977.
He married
Verna Ahmann on Feb. 12, 1963, in Ukiah, Calif. The couple moved to Grand Island in 1977, where he was employed by the Games and Parks Commission until 1984. Mrs. Johnstone died on Nov. 7, 1996.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church; Gorebridge Dundas Lodge No. 1039, A.F. & A.M.; Gorebridge Midlothian, Scotland; Scottish Rite, Tehama Temple, Hastings; and the Galloway Cattle Society, where he was a lifelong member. He was commissioned an admiral in the Nebraska Navy by Gov. Robert Kerrey on Dec. 31, 1984, and served as an international judge of cattle.
Survivors include two sisters, Isabel Johnstone and Marion Chalmers, both of Dumfries, Scotland.
He was preceded in death by his wife, one brother and a sister.
Evelyn Oliver
Evelyn Oliver, 69, of Grand Island died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Dennis Reich officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Oliver was born on Sept. 13, 1931, at Grand Island to Clarence and Frieda (Bergholz) Rauert. She grew up and received her education in the Grand Island area.
She married
Myron Oliver on Sept. 21, 1952, in Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island. In 1974, she began working at the Fonner Park race track, where she was employed until her death.
She volunteered at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center for nine years and at the Grand Generation Center. She enjoyed bingo, traveling and spending time with her family.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Rodney and Lisa Oliver of Grand Island; two grandsons; and one sister and brother-in-law, Bette and Richard Dent of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother, James Rauert.
Reuben Paulsen
90, Retired
Reuben C. Paulsen, 90, of Grand Island died Friday, June 8, 2001 at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church with the Rev. John D. Russell officiating. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Pauls Lutheran Church.
Mr. Paulsen was born July 25, 1910, in Howard County, near Elba, to Paul C. and Anna (Lassen) Paulsen. He attended District 29 School in Howard County and later started farming with his father.
In 1966 he moved to Grand Island and began working at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant where he worked until 1972. He then did carpentry work until his retirement.
On July 8, 1967, he married
Edna Wiese in Grand Island.
He enjoyed woodworking, baseball and fishing and was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church, the Platt-Duetsche and the Eagles Club.
Survivors include a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Robert and Joan Wiese of Grand Island; three grandsons; one great-granddaughter; and one niece and her husband, who were caregivers, Irene and Shorty Hahn of Central City.
He was preceded in death by his wife and two sisters, Edna Christensen Boldt and Agnes Nielsen.
'Alex' Ramirez
Ruben "Alex" Ramirez, 2, of Grand Island died Sunday, June 10, 2001, as a result of a vehicle-pedestrian accident.
Services are pending with All Faiths Funeral Home.
Blanche Urban
83, Retired from Retail Sales
Blanche M. Urban, 83, of Grand Island died Sunday, June 10, 2001, at her daughter's home in Elwood.
Graveside services and burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery with the Rev. Onamae Waddel officiating.
There will be no visitation. Mrs. Urban's body was cremated.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Central Plains Home Health and Hospice in Cozad.
Mrs. Urban was born July 9, 1917, in Colome, S.D., to Joseph and Anna (Brom) Rada. She grew up in the area and attended and graduated from high school in Winner, S.D.
She married
Frank J. Urban, Jr., on April 20, 1938, at Colome, S.D. The couple farmed near Colome until moving to Springview in 1946. The family came to Grand Island in 1950. They moved to Boelus, where they spent two years, returning to Grand Island in the early 1960s. She helped her husband with his various businesses and also sold Avon products. Mr. Urban died in 1975. She then worked in retail sales for Clayton's Gifts and later at Sheila & Co.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, BPOE Does, Grand Island Woman's Club, Platt-Duetsche, Saddle Club and the Liederkranz.
She enjoyed sewing, embroidering, reading and flower gardening.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Ann and Lindsay Michalski of Elwood and Arlene and Robert Hanna of Lincoln; one son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Sherry Urban of Round Rock, Texas; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
