Mary Ellen Cowan
ORD -- Mary Ellen Cowan, 90, of Ord died Saturday, June 9, 2001 at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Ord Memorial Chapel with Stanley Morrison officiating. Graveside services will be at 3 p.m. at the Grand Island Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with family receiving friends from 7 to 8 p.m., at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the Ord Senior Center.
Mrs. Cowan was born Nov. 23, 1910 to Lincoln and Minnie (Snow) Crouch in Sargent. She moved with her family to Blaine County near Brewster and in 1916 the family moved to a farm southwest of Ord. They moved to Taylor in 1926 and returned to Ord in 1929.
She attended Ord Elementary and her freshman year at Ord High School. She graduated from Taylor High School in 1928.
She married
Arthur Rux on Oct. 28, 1952 in Greeley, where they lived for two years before moving to Ord.
On Feb. 4, 1980 she married
William Cowan of Arena, Wis., in Kearney. The couple lived in Arena.
She returned to Ord in 1984.
She was employed at Hans Larsen Grocery Store, the telephone company, Sack Lumber Yard and Mode O'Day. While in Wisconsin she was the coordinator of the Senior Center Meal Site.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Carol and Leo Thomsen of Ord, three granddaughters and one sister-in-law, Leona Crouch of San Benito, Texas.
She was preceded in death by her husbands; two brothers, Merrill and Harley Crouch; one sister, Leona Janssen; and one half sister, Lucy O'Shields.
Richard Kelly
CENTRAL CITY -- Richard Paul Kelly, 81, of Central City died Sunday, June 10, 2001 at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Memorial services are pending with Solt Funeral Home in Central City.
Helen Lathrop
BURWELL -- Helen Lathrop, 86, of Burwell died Friday, June 8, 2001 at the Rose Lane Home in Loup City.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church in Burwell with the Revs. Eldon Davis Jr. and Michael Laing officiating. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hitchcock Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the Rose Court at Rose Lane Home in Loup City or the Burwell Ambulance Supply Fund.
Mrs. Lathrop was born Sept. 24, 1914 to George and Laura (Whitesell) Davis in Burwell.
On Feb. 11, 1936 she married
Joy Lathrop in Burwell. They moved to Woodland, Calif. for about five years, then moved to Grand Rapids, Mich. In the 1940s they moved to Grand Island, and in 1949 moved to Burwell where they built and ran Mercury Cleaners until 1974. They bought Burwell Bowl and ran the bowling alley until they retired in the late 1970s.
Mr. Lathrop died Feb. 26, 1986.
She had been a resident of Rose Lane Home since 1996.
Survivors include one sister, Louise Miller of Burwell and one grandson.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one son, Larry, and two brothers, Elsworth and Eldon Davis.
Perry Rostvit
ST. PAUL -- Perry Eugene Rostvit, infant son of Pam Caruso and John Rostvit, died at birth Friday, June 8, 2001 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Private funeral services will be at a later date, with burial at Clarinda, Iowa.
Memorials are suggested to the Perry Eugene Rostvit memorial fund.
Kleine Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include his parents, both of St. Paul; one sister, Chelsea; grandparents Lowell and Sue Rostvit of Kearney and Beverly Gard of Emerson, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Eugene Goforth.
Harold Swanson
ORD -- Harold Swanson, 76, of Ord died Saturday, June 9, 2001 at his home in Ord.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Christian Church in Burwell with the Rev. Rolly Salts officiating. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the Mid Nebraska Individual Services.
Mr. Swanson was born Feb. 24, 1925 to Roy and Pearl (Conner) Swanson at the family home in Garfield County, where he later attended rural school.
In the mid 1960s he moved to Broken Bow and was a resident at Mid Nebraska Individual Services. In 1982 he moved to Ord and was one of the first residents of Mid Nebraska Individual Services in that community.
He made bullet weights at the workshop at Mid Nebraska Individual Services.
He enjoyed listening to the radio, polka music, pocket and wrist watches and observing farm machinery.
Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Gene and Darlene Swanson of Burwell.
Ronald Carlson
OSCEOLA -- Ronald J. Carlson, 61, of Osceola died Friday, June 8, 2001 at his home.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Osceola with Pastor Clifford Hoper officiating. Burial will be in the Swede Home Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Kepner-Roberts Funeral Home in Osceola.
Mr. Carlson was born April 27, 1940 to G. Clarence and Minnie (Ekstrom) Carlson in Omaha. He graduated from Osceola High School in 1958 and Luther Junior College in 1960.
On Feb. 12, 1961 he married
Carol Ann Henry in Osceola.
He worked as a truck driver for Roberts Dairy and also for Husker Co-op in Osceola.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Tina Carlson of Osceola; two daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Scott Nickolite of Columbus and Cheryl and Troy Nelson of Scribner; one brother, Paul Carlson of Osceola; two sisters, Miriam Johnson of Grand Island and Nancy Carlson of Minneapolis; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Mary Haynes Smith
WAVERLY -- Mary G. Haynes Smith, 94, of Waverly died Saturday, June 9, 2001 in Waverly.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. The Rev. Patrick Grindol will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery.
Mrs. Haynes Smith was born July 7, 1906 to Arthur D. and Clara (Butler) Haynes in David City. The family moved to Grand Island in 1917. She attended the Grand Island schools.
On June 12, 1923 she married
Howard J. Smith in Central City. They lived all their married
life in Grand Island. She worked at the Army Ammunition Plant as a guard in World War II, and also worked at J.C. Penney and Greenbergers.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Church Circle, Eastern Star Andrew Chapter 41, Hall County Extension Club, Daughters of the Nile 108 in Hastings, and a garden club.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Marjorie and Glen Klanecky of Lincoln; one daughter-in-law, Margaret Jane Smith of Versaille, Ky.; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and one sister, Melda B. Shippey of Madison, N.J.
She was preceded in death by her husband, one son, Melvin H. Smith, three brothers and an infant sister.
