Dorothy Pomeroy
CLIVE, Iowa -- Dorothy Lewton Pomeroy, 72, of Clive, Iowa, died June 16, 2000 at her home.
Services were June 20 at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in West Des Moines, Iowa. Burial was at the Resthaven cemetery in West Des Moines.
Memorials are suggested to the Catholic Charities or House of Mercy, both in Des Moines.
Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines was in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Pomeroy was born Oct. 7, 1927, at Ashton. She had lived in Des Moines since 1954, moving from Hastings. She was a homemaker and had also worked as a beautician.
She was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, the Franciscans, the 76 Dance Club and the Couples Club. She had been an election volunteer for more than 30 years.
Survivors include her husband, Robert of Clive; two daughters, Ginger Sirianni of Indianola, Iowa, and Laurie Schmillen of Cottage Grove, Minn.; five sons, Steve Lewton of Davenport Iowa, Scot Lewton of Johnston, Iowa, Terry Lewton of Beaverdale, Iowa, Russ Lewton of Ankeny, Iowa and Kenny Lewton of Grand Island; three sisters, Louise Borowski of Grand Island, Marge Sass of Hastings and JoAnn Koenigsman of Omaha; one brother, Jim Stobbe of Grand Island and 20 grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Harold Lewton.
Dr. Earl Rogers
FAIRFIELD BAY, Ark. -- Dr. Earl A. Rogers, 90, of Fairfield Bay, Ark., died Tuesday, July 4, 2000, at Clinton, Ark.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Kirk of the Hills Church in Fairfield Bay. The Rev. Glen Nagel will officiate.
Roller McNutt Funeral Home of Clinton is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Rogers was born on Sept. 30, 1909, in Nebraska to James E. and Myrtle H. (Jerome) Rogers.
He married
Helen Wilch on July 3, 1931. He graduated from medical school in 1936 in Nebraska.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and retired as a colonel. He served as Nebraska director of health for a number of years.
He was a member of Kirk of the Hills Presbyterian Church in Fairfield Bay. He also was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Alpha Omega Alpha honor society. He was named one of two Young Outstanding Nebraska Citizens in 1930.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Lou Ann Brach of Walkersville, Md., and Sharon L. Berdine of Fairfield Bay; a foster daughter, Lynnelle Sapp of Fort Pierce, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Mary Dooley of Omaha and Billie Gee of Central City.
He was preceded in death by a son, Dr. James Rogers.
Rodney Rodgers
Rodney L. Rodgers, 51, of Grand Island died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002 at St. Francis Medical Center Emergency Room.
Services are pending with Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Survivors include his mother, Patricia Kellogg of Norfolk; three sisters, Rhoda Rodgers of Charleston, S.C., Rhonda Rodgers of Atlantic, Iowa and Rita Lawson of Springfield, M.O.; and one brother, Randy Rodgers of Omaha.
Doris Welch
Doris V. Welch, 85, of Grand Island died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Beverly Healthcare Park Place in Grand Island.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. George Whitehead will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Kleine Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Welch was born Nov. 25, 1916, in Grand Island to William and Charlotte (Holsinger) Bennett. She grew up and attended Grand Island schools, graduating from Grand Island Senior High.
She married
George O. Welch on June 3, 1939, in Grand Island. She worked at the Army Ammunition Plant and several other jobs. She was self-employed for some time doing office cleaning, worked at Tiny Tot Manor and helped care for other people and children.
She enjoyed spending time with her family.
She was a lifelong member of the Mormon Church.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, George and Kathy Welch of Glendale, Ariz., and James and Connie Welch and Oren Welch of Grand Island; six daughters and sons-in-law, Carol and Bruce Starkey of Omaha, Gayle and Robert Newman and Donna and John DeBacker of Grand Island, Deanna and Terry Barnum of Denver, Barbara and Charles Core of Castle Rock, Colo., and Julie and Howard Cottam of Escondido, Calif.; 27 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband who died March 9, 1986; one infant daughter, Wendy; one infant granddaughter; one sister, Josephine Beberniss; and one brother, William Bennett.
June Bessey
CENTRAL CITY -- June Bessey, 97, of Central City died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002 in Salem, Ore.
Graveside services will be at 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the Central City Cemetery. The Rev. Joy Savage will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Solt Funeral Home chapel in Central City.
Solt Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Doris Pester
ARCADIA -- Doris Pester, 75, of Arcadia died Friday, Jan. 4, 2002 at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Tom Mullowney will officiate. Burial will be in the Lee Park cemetery near Arcadia.
Visitation will be from 2 to 5 p.m. Monday at the funeral home and from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the church. A vigil service will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Josaphat's Catholic Church, the Loup City American Legion Auxiliary or to the donor's choice.
Mrs. Pester was born July 12, 1926 in Custer County to Zera A. and Mary M. (Papiernik) Sell. The family moved to Arcadia when she was 5. She graduated from Arcadia High School in 1944. After high school she worked at the Loup City hospital.
In 1945 she began nurse's training in Chicago. She received her R.N. degree from the St. Joseph's School of Nursing in 1948. She earned her B.S. degree at Kearney State College in 1980. She returned to Nebraska in 1950 and was employed at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
She married
Byron A. Pester on Aug. 26, 1952. They lived on a farm west of Arcadia. She worked with the bloodmobile and student health screening programs, and also as a private duty nurse in hospitals in the area.
The couple moved to Arcadia in 1959, where she worked in the Arcadia Health Center Clinic. She was employed at Valley County Hospital and then with E.S.U. 10 as a school nurse serving Valley, Loup, Garfield, Custer and Sherman counties. She had a 46 year nursing career, with 24 of those years spent as a school nurse.
Mr. Pester died in January 1995.
She was a member of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church, Loup City American Legion Auxiliary and served on the Gathering Place Board. She served several years as parade chairman for the Arcadia Fall Festival. She enjoyed gardening and working in her yard and helping and caring for people with health needs around Arcadia.
Survivors include one sister and brother-in-law, Florence and Bernard Guggenmos of Sioux City; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Norman and Joyce Sell of Lincoln and Marlin and MarJo Sell of Ansley; two sisters-in-law, Marion Sell of Bellevue and Fern Sell of Fairbury; and one half-brother and his wife, Brad and Carolyn Sell of Arcadia.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two brothers, Allen Sell and Delwin (Buzz) Sell.
Nellie Sallach
ALBION -- Nellie Sallach, 78, of Albion died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at the Boone County Health Center in Albion.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Albion. The Rev. Terry Otto will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Levander Funeral Home in Albion.
Mrs. Sallach was born on Sept. 1, 1923, in Waukesha, Wis., to Harold and Helen (Andersen) Brown. She attended Lindbloom School in Chicago. She also helped for a short time in an office where they made materials for World War II. She volunteered at the USO Club, where she met her future husband.
She married
Lyle Sallach on Oct. 22, 1943, at her parents' home. She traveled to live near Lyle while he was stationed in Louisianna and Arkansas. Following Lyle's discharge, they lived and farmed near Albion for 17 years, before moving into Albion. She worked as a bookkeeper for Brown McDonalds and later for Azonic Products for 27 years.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women. She received her 50 year United Methodist Church member pin and a UMC Special Membership Pin. She was a member of the 50-year Y.M. Club and served as activities chairman at UMC.
Survivors include her husband; one son and daughter-in-law, David and Harriet Sallach of Evanston, Ill.; two daughters and son-in-law, Barbara and John James of Humboldt and Peggy Belgum of Albion; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two brothers and a sister-in-law, Victor and Fran of Houston and Maurice Brown of Albion; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene and Frank Robinson of Carterville, Ill., and Doris and Bob Bogart of Latrobe, Pa.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Lily Janson and Margaret Jensen and one granddaughter.
