Fairy Wingo
BROKEN BOW -- Fairy E. Wingo, 89, of Broken Bow, formerly of Texas, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grove Hill cemetery in Dallas. The Rev. Dan Carroll will officiate.
Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Custer County Hospice.
Mrs. Wingo was born March 5, 1912, at Broken Bow to John and Cora (Hughes) Wooters. She grew up in the Bethel Union community in Custer County. She attended Snake Run School before graduating from Broken Bow High School in 1929. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln for two years.
She married
Howard Taylor in 1932. They were divorced in 1941.
She married
Walter Wingo in Las Vegas, N.M., in 1947. She lived in Dallas from 1948 to 2000, when she moved back to Broken Bow to live with her daughter.
Survivors include a daughter, Marilyn Maudlin of Broken Bow; a son, Walter S. Wingo of Dallas; three grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a sister, Faye Hatfield.
Velma Sandell
POLK -- Velma I. Sandell, 88, of Polk died at BryanLGH East in Lincoln on Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Polk. The Rev. Roger Burke will officiate. Burial will be in the Lindale cemetery near Polk
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Solt Funeral Home in Polk.
Memorials are suggested to the Gideons International or the Polk Senior Center.
Mrs. Sandell was born Oct. 7, 1912, in Valley County to Charles R. and Grace I. (Gustafson) Leach. She grew up in the Hamilton County and Polk County areas and graduated from York High School in 1930. After graduation, she taught for two years at District 74 School in Hamilton County and 11Ž2 years in Valley County.
She married
Elwood M. Sandell on March 25, 1934, at her parents' farm in Hamilton County. The couple lived in the Polk area where they farmed. Her husband died in January 1999, and she moved to Lincoln later that year.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Polk, served in the Sunday School as the treasurer and as a teacher, and belonged to the Mission Circle of the church. She also was a charter member of the Gideon Auxiliary. She enjoyed reading.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Kendall and Cindy Sandell of Polk; three daughters and son-in-law, Mary Lou Sandell and Carmen Sandell, both of Lincoln, and Joan and Jerry Jones of LaVista; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Kenneth and Gwen Leach of Ord and Dale and Ernestine Leach of Loveland, Colo.; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Mamie Leach of Grand Island; and brother-in-law, Robert Tupper of Purcell, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a brother, Virgil Leach; and a sister, Blanche Tupper.
Dorothy Taylor
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -- Dorothy M. Taylor, 80, of Colorado Springs, Colo., formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday, Oct. 2, 2001, at Colorado Springs.
Service will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. The Rev. Julie Bringelson will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or American Lung Association.
Survivors include her husband, Ferrol P. Taylor, and a daughter, Sally Taylor, both of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Harold A. Zlomke.
'Herb' McCullough
Harold I. "Herb" McCullough, 66, of Grand Island died Friday, July 20, 2001, at his home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Kleine Funeral Home. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island Cemetery. Military rites will be given by Fort Riley Color Guard.
Visitation was Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the American Diabetes Foundation or the Veteran Affairs Medical Center.
Mr. McCullough was born Oct. 3, 1934, at Bassett to Henry and Helen (Fleming) McCullough. He grew up on the farm before moving with his family to Bassett at age 10. He attended school in Bassett, graduating in 1953.
After graduation, he taught country school for six months and then was drafted into the U.S. Army. He served in the Army from 1954 to 1957. After returning from the service, he worked as a butcher at the IGA in Atkinson.
He married
Carolyn Grieg on April 8, 1961, in Atkinson. They moved to Alliance, where they lived from 1961 to 1967. They moved to Grand Island in 1967 and lived there until his death. He worked at Fine Liquors for the past 10 years.
He enjoyed arts and crafts and playing bingo and cribbage. He played pool in the Monday night league and was a member of the Blue Knights pool team, Eagles Club and American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Cheryl and John Palmer of Grand Island; a son, Robert of Omaha; and two brothers, Robert of Aurora, Colo., and Gene of Thornton, Colo.
Geneva Carter
SILVER CREEK -- Geneva N. Carter, 97, of Silver Creek, died Monday, July 23, 2001, at the Community Long Term Care in Genoa.
Services are pending with Solt Funeral Home in Central City.
Survivors include a brother, Cedric Finecy of Osceola; a daughter-in-law, Katherine Carter of Central City; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
'Pete' Fischer
BURWELL -- LaVerne R. "Pete" Fischer, 59, of Burwell died Tuesday, July 24, 2001.
Services are pending.
Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Virgil Johnson
LINCOLN -- Virgil A. Johnson, 80, emeriti professor at University of Nebraska-Lincoln, died Sunday, July 22, 2001, at his home in Lincoln.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Roper and Sons Mortuary.
Visitation will begin Saturday. The family will greet friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Dr. Johnson was born June 28, 1921, at Newman Grove to Oscar J. and Fairy Bell (Johnson) Johnson. He graduated from Albion High School in 1940 and in December of that year he joined the U.S. Army. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. As a pilot in the 416th Night Fighter Squadron (12th Air Force), he flew in the European Theater, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross and Air Medal with two Oak Clusters.
He married
Betty Ann Tisthammer of Albion on July 29, 1943, at Williams Field in Chandler, Ariz. Returning to Nebraska after the war, he earned his bachelor of science degree in 1948 and his Ph.D. in 1952 from UNL. He was employed by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as part of the Agricultural Research Service and was located at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Department of Agronomy from 1952 to 1986.
Along with long-time colleague, John Schmidt, he was co-leader of internationally recognized Nebraska Wheat Research Team.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Chuck Harris of York; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. Reed and Kathleen Johnson of Faribault, Minn., and Dr. Scott and Linda Johnson of Ames, Iowa; eight grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a brother and sister-in-law, Leslie and Pauline Johnson of Turlock, Calif.; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Irene Thur of Newman Grove, Norma and Richard Burton of Balboa Island, Calif., and Leona and Bill Swartz of Sun City West, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Leslie and brothers, Harlan, Floyd and Noah Johnson.
