'Sonny' Vollweiler
HASTINGS -- Louis J. "Sonny" Vollweiler, 82, a lifelong Hastings resident, died Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2001, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Butler-Volland Chapel with William Morrow officiating. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery in Hastings will military rites.
There will be no visitation. His body was cremated. Book signing will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. to service time Friday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to Shrine Transportation Fund.
Mr. Vollweiler was born June 26, 1919, at Hastings to Louis J. and Lena (Sittner) Vollweiler. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1938. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from Feb. 13, 1941, to Oct. 3, 1945.
He married
Helen Brotherton in November 1946. He owned and operated Bak-Vol Starter and Generator Co. for 39 years, retiring in 1987.
He was a member of First Presbyterian Church, 50-year member of Mid-West Lodge No. 317 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rites, Tehema Shrine Temple, Elks and American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and sons-in-law, Connie and Gene Smith of Albuquerque, N.M., and Madeline and Time Kennedy of Hastings; six grandchildren; four stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; a sister, Lucille Stephenson of Lincoln; two sisters-in-law, Sheila Brotherton of Littleton, Colo., and Marietta Vollweiler of Hastings; and a brother-in-law, B.L. "Stub" Herzog of Ft. Collins, Colo.
He was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters.
Donald Klein
MONTEREY, Calif. -- Donald S. Klein, 76, of Monterey, Calif., formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Sept. 16, 2001, at Community Hospital of Monterey, Calif.
Services will be 10:00 a.m. Saturday at Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m.
Mr. Klein was born June 15, 1925, at Grand Island to Samuel and Lillian (Kay) Klein. He received his education in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island Senior High in 1943. He entered the U.S. Army in 1943 and served during World War II at the Battle of the Bulge. He was discharged in 1946.
He married
Darlene B. Metro on June 16, 1946, in Grand Island. The couple lived in various parts of the United States, including Nebraska, Kansas and Oklahoma before residing in Del Ray Oaks, Calif. He was an owner and operator of retail clothing. His wife died on Dec. 29, 1994.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island.
Survivors include three sons, Donald Klein of Las Vegas, Nev., Tom Klein of Bayou Vista, La., and Richard Klein of El Paso, Texas; nine grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Harold R. Klein of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his wife and two grandchildren.
Gerhart Pritschau
THE DALLES, Ore. -- Gerhart W. Pritschau, 85, of The Dalles, Ore., died Tuesday, Sept. 11, 2001, in Evanston, Wyo.
Services were at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna. The Rev. Mark Cadenbach officiated. Burial was in Hayestown cemetery north of Ravenna.
Visitation was held prior to the service at the mortuary.
Mr. Pritschau was born Sept. 21, 1915, at Loup City to Werner and Etta (Christiansen) Pritschau. He was educated in Ravenna and The Dalles, Ore.
He owned and operated a bar, Babe and Marge's, in The Dalles for many years.
Survivors include his sister, Margaret Smart of The Dalles, Ore.
Carlton Bloom
Carlton J. Bloom, 92, of Grand Island died Monday, December 17, 2001, at the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Charles Vlcan
Charles A. Vlcan, 89, of Grand Island died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Tiffany Square Nursing Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Harms will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Island Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to Alzheimer's Association.
Mr. Vlcan was born Dec. 20, 1911, at Monowi to Frank A. Sr. and Carrie (Masek) Vlcan. He was raised in Monowi where he graduated from high school. He attended the Grand Island Business College. He entered the U.S.. Navy on Oct. 5, 1942, serving in World War II. He was honorably discharged Oct. 26, 1945, at Bainbridge, Md.
He married
Audrey Clark on Aug. 10, 1936, in Grand Island. He was employed by the Veteran's Administration in Washington D.C. and the Veterans Medical Centers in Lincoln and Grand Island. Following retirement, they lived in Sun City, Ariz., from 1970 to 1990 before returning to Grand Island.
He enjoyed gardening and flowers.
Survivors include his wife and three sisters, Rose Stoural of Creighton, Mildred Baines of Omaha and Helen McGreevy of Malibu, Calif.
He was preceded in death by four brothers, Henry, Jim, Emil and Frank Vlcan.
Eva Adams
CENTRAL CITY -- Eva K. Adams, 97, of Central City, formerly of Belgrade, died Saturday, Dec. 15 at Litzenberg Long Term Care Unit in Central City.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Rev. Jurdan Counts will officiate. Burial will be in Main cemetery near Belgrade.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Mrs. Adams was born July 24, 1904, at North Bend to William and Mary (Arps) Landers. She moved at an early age with her family. She worked as a telephone operator in Belgrade for several years.
She married
Ottie Adams on Jan. 3, 1922, in Albion. In 1926, they moved to Belgrade. During the war, she worked at Adams Oil Company. Her husband died Dec. 22, 1963. She continued to live in Belgrade. In 1944, she moved to Merrick Manor in Central City and then later to Litzenberg Long Term Care Unit until her death.
She was a member of Belgrade United Methodist Church, Charter Member of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 99 of Belgrade and had been active in Nance County Red Cross. She enjoyed growing and working with flowers, bingo, dancing and caring for the sick and needy.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles and Irene and Lewis and Donna, all of Belgrade; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Louis and LeRoy, and two sisters, Lena Irwin and Alice Best.
Anna Kirby
ORD -- Anna Kirby, 95 of Ord died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Ord. The Rev. Robert Caldwell will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society or the donor's choice.
Mrs. Kirby was born Feb. 20, 1906, at Denmark to Julius and Camelia (Jensen) Mogensen. At a young age, she moved with her family to the United States. At the age of 12, she returned to Denmark for a short time before returning to the United States and settled in the Sutherland, Hershey, North Platte area. She lived much of her time growing up with her aunt and uncle Chris and Mary Jensen. She worked in housekeeping.
She married
Chester Kirby on March 2, 1930, in North Platte. The couple moved to Valley County where they farmed. They sold eggs, milk and cream so they could buy groceries. She also did a lot of baby-sitting. They retired from the farm in 1970 and moved to Ord. Her husband died May 27, 1988. She then moved to Parkview Village in Ord. Since January 2001, she lived at Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
She was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Ord. She enjoyed playing cards and being with her family.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Clarice and Ernie Lewandowski of Rockford, Ill., Alice and Albin Bruha of Burwell and Mary Lou Hulinsky of Grand Island; 21 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, Mary Boyce of Ord.
She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Louis; four grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a son-in-law, Stanley Hulinsky, three brothers, Frank, Bill and Hank Morgensen, and two sisters, Marie Parnell and Elsie Parnell.
