Carl Christensen
TAYLOR -- Carl Christensen, 83, of Taylor died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Evangelical Free Church in Taylor. The Rev. Roy Kiester will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in Ft. McPherson National cemetery in Maxwell with military rites.
Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Rhoad Funeral Home in Sargent.
Memorials are suggested to Loup County Rescue Unit or the church of the donor's choice.
Mr. Christensen was born Jan. 23, 1918, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Jens P. and Fannie C. (Graham) Christensen. He moved to Loup City with his family in 1921. He received his education in Loup County, graduating from Taylor High School in 1935. He helped his parents on the ranch until January 1941 when he was drafted into the U.S. Army for a one-year tour. He was the first person from Loup County to be drafted under the Selective Service System. He was assigned to the Horse Calvary in Arizona. He expected to get begin discharge paperwork Dec. 8, 1941, when the attacks on Pearl Harbor extended all active duty personnel until the end of the war. He spent the next four years with the 9th Tank Battalion in the European Theater where he participated in the Battle of the Bulge, Remegan Bridge Head and other operations in the war effort. He was discharged in November 1945. He returned to Taylor.
He married
Margaret Campbell on Dec. 23, 1945, in Smith Center, Kan. The couple lived on the Christensen family ranch north of Taylor. They began contracting a school bus route in 1972. His wife passed away Aug. 8, 2001.
He took pride in his family, Hereford cattle and the Sandhills. He was a charter member of Taylor VFW Clements Post 6159. He was active in the Memorial Day observances at Loup County cemeteries in the capacity of honor guard, various post offices and placement of memorial markers on veteran's graves. He became a licensed Amateur Radio Operator in 1969. The couple were instrumental in the planning of the annual Victoria Springs Amateur Radio picnic for many years.
Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Bob of Springview and Jim and Shirley of Mead; a daughter and son-in-law, Carla and Leon Freeman of North Platte; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a sister and brother-in-law, Marie and Bernard Dill.
He was preceded in death by his wife and a sister, Grace Watland.
'Louie' Greenwalt
ELYRIA -- Aloysius "Louie" Greenwalt, 101, of Elyria died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ord. The Rev. Bob Rooney will officiate. Burial will be in Ord Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel with a rosary at 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the church or donor's choice.
Mr. Greenwalt was born Aug. 22, 1900, in Valley County to Zack and Mary (Carkoski) Greenwalt. He grew up in the Ord and Elyria area, attending the Valley County schools.
He married
Elizabeth Benden on May 4, 1926, in Elyria. The couple lived and farmed in the area for many years. His wife died June 19, 1993. In 1986, he suffered a stroke. In August 2000, he celebrated his 100th birthday. He remained on the family farm until his death with the care of his grandson, David Eiberger.
He was a member of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed music, playing the accordion and playing with his family in a bad at many dances. He also enjoyed telling stories, playing cards and fishing.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Dolores and Maurus Eiberger of St. Paul and Rita and Jack Lliteras of Grand Island, 10 grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, three sisters, Rose Lonowski, Magdalen Wisniski and Dorothy Niemeyer, and a brother, Edwin Greenwalt.
Leo Haith
CENTRAL CITY -- Leo G. Haith, 81, of Central City died on Tuesday, December 18, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Central City with the Rev. Joy Savage officiating.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Baseball Program or the United Methodist Church in Central City.
Mr. Haith was born on March 2, 1920, in Auburn to George T. and Della Mae (Miller) Haith. He was raised in Auburn and graduated from Auburn High School in 1939. After graduation, he worked on the barges on the Missouri River before entering the U.S. Navy. He served in World War II aboard the USS Crescent City.
On January 20, 1939, he married
Donna Mae Newton in Auburn. After his discharge from the military, he returned to Auburn and opened Haith's Service Station. In 1946, they moved to Central City. He owned and operated Haith Motor Company. He also operated the Central City ambulance service for 26 years.
In November 1962, he married
Norma Lee Gillan. She worked with him in their business. They retired in 1993 and his wife died on January 10, 1997. He continued to live in Central City after his retirement and on October 23, 1997, he married
Marie McMahon-Gee.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City, a 50-year member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Clarks VFW, American Legion Post 6 in Central City and the 40 and 8 Club. He loved horses, watching all youth sports events, and American Legion Baseball. He was awarded the Service to Mankind Award given by the Sertoma Club.
Survivors include his wife Marie of Central City; his children, Charlene and her husband Paul Page of Broken Bow, Leo G. Haith, Jr. of Valley, William and his wife Deb Beck of Medford, Ore., Ruthie and her husband John Carrington of St. Louis, Deborah Haith of Bellevue, Deon Haith of Milwaukee, Wis., Leon and his wife Nancy Haith of Omaha, Toria and her husband Kent Clausen of Central City and Georgia and her husband J.R. Osbon of North Platte; one brother, Carl and his wife Margaret Haith of Plattsmouth; two sisters, Gladys Thystreep of China Springs, Texas, and Lucile Barnes of Fountain Valley, Calif; five step-daughters, Diane and her husband Robert Evers of Gilbert, Ariz.; Rebecca and her husband Dennis Sealey of Seattle, Hyla and her husband Dennis McLean of Mesa, Ariz, Barbara "Bobbi" and her husband Steve Seymour of Mobile, Ala., and Patricia Gee of Chandler, Ariz.; 11 grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 9 step grandchildren; 3 great great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Leo was preceded in death by his wife, Norma; two grandchildren, Jessica Haith and Jacob Erlandson and two sisters.
Madalyn McNeff
PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Madalyn McNeff, 53, of Pittsburgh, Pa., formerly of Fullerton, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001, at her home of natural causes.
Services are pending at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton.
Don Schuessler
FAIR OAKS, Calif. -- Don W. Schuessler, 70, of Fair Oaks, Calif., died Sunday, Dec. 16, 2001, at his home.
Private services for the family will be Thursday in Fair Oaks, Calif.
Mr. Schuessler was born Aug. 19, 1931, at Grand Island to Alfred and Clara (Daudt) Schuessler. He attended Trinity Lutheran School and graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1949. He attended the University of Nebraska. After serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he attended a court reporting school in San Francisco. He served as a court reporter for the county of Sacramento for 34 years until his retirement.
He enjoyed the arts and world travel.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Genevieve; two daughters and son-in-law, Heidi Schuessler and Karen and Bob Hennigi; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Michelle Schuessler; seven grandchildren; two sisters, Emma Campbell of Canby, Ore., and Lena Biagi of Roseville, Calif.; and two brothers, Reinie and Harold of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Bertha, and a brother, Ernest.
Carlton Bloom
Carlton J. Bloom, 92, of Grand Island died Monday, Dec. 17, 2001, at the Nebraska Veterans Home.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Rosehill cemetery in Waverly. The Rev. James Brewer will officiate.
There will be no visitation.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Bloom was born March 15, 1909, at Atkinson to Charles R. and Anna H. (Erickson) Bloom. He grew up and attended school in Atkinson. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1942 and served in World War II. He was honorably discharged in 1943.
He married
Mary J. Clouse. The couple lived in Lincoln where he was employed in maintenance for the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. He later resided at Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Calvin and Callie Bloom; a stepson, Calvin Clouse; two stepdaughters, Alpha Jansen and Gloria Cummings; and four stepgrandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife; a stepdaughter, Blanche Clouse; and six sisters, Esther Anderson, Lillian David, Lucille Bloom, Ferne Zehrung, Mable Liden and Kathleen Evans.
Randy Jeppesen
Randy Jeppesen, 49, of Grand Island died on Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2001 at his home after an illness.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Kleine Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Bill Forbes will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice Association.
