Katherine Scholl
PETERSBURG -- Katherine E. Scholl, 84, of Petersburg died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in Petersburg. The Revs. Jerel Scholl and Frank Baumert will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion and will continue at 6:30 p.m. at the church with a 7 p.m. wake service.
Mrs. Scholl was born Feb. 17, 1917, on a farm west of Loretto to Edward C. and Mary (Powers) Kelley. She attended Boone County District 89 School until the eighth grade. She graduated from Albion High School in 1934. She then received normal training and taught for one year at District 67 School and then for four years at District 89 School in Boone County. In 1942, she moved with her mother to Albion where she worked at J.C. Penney Co. for 16 years.
She married
Leonard Scholl on Nov. 11, 1957, at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church in Columbus. The couple lived on a farm east of Petersburg. She also worked as a homemaker.
She was a member of St. John's Catholic Church in Petersburg and Christian Mothers. She enjoyed gardening, teaching, watching Nebraska football and was good cook and hostess. Her husband died Nov. 18, 2001.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Mary L. and Michael Meuret of Norfolk, Kathleen A. and Scott Jackson of Columbus and Sharon Scholl of Albuquerque, N.M.; three sons and daughters-in-law, Cletus and Carol of Columbus, LaVern and Dianne of Tilden and Waldean and Karen of Petersburg; 20 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and five brothers, Patrick, Robert, Edward, James and Leonard.
Elsie Kain
SYLMAR, Calif. -- Elsie W. (Bockman) Kain, 94, of Sylmar, Calif., formerly of Grand Island, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at Holy Cross Hospital in Mission Hills, Calif.
Services are pending at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
William Shomshor
AURORA, Colo. -- William W. Shomshor, 60, of Aurora, Colo., died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital in Denver.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Horan & McConaty Family Chapel in Aurora, Colo. Burial of cremains will be in Fort Logan National cemetery in Denver.
Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association in Denver.
Mr. Shomshor was born Sept. 29, 1941, at Grand Island to William A. and Beatrice Shomshor. He attended St. Mary's Blessed Sacrament and Central Catholic High School in Grand Island. He received his Nebraska Electronic degree from Central Nebraska Tech in Hastings. He joined the U.S. Navy and was honorably discharged in 1962.
He married
Linda J. Guzman on June 15, 1963, in Grand Island. He was a senior engineer for Lucent Technologies for 30 years.
He was an avid Nebraska University fan. He enjoyed working on the computer and riding his motorcycle.
Survivors include his wife; two sons and a daughter-in-law, William J. and Donna Shomshor, and Mark Shomshor, all of Parker, Colo.; four grandchildren; and a sister and brother-in-law, Margo and Larry Denning of Salina, Kan.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas F. Shomshor.
Rev. C. Leo Sweeney
CHICAGO -- The Rev. C. Leo Sweeney, 83, of Chicago, formerly of O'Connor, died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at St. Joseph Hospital in Chicago due to colon cancer.
Services will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Madonna Della Strada Chapel at Loyola University in Chicago. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. until service time at the chapel. Burial will be Thursday at 9:30 a.m. in All Saints cemetery in DePlains, Ill.
The Rev. Sweeney was born Sept. 22, 1918, on a farm east of O'Connor. He completed grade school and high school studies at St. Joseph's Academy before entering the Society of Jesus in Florissant, Mo., in 1936. During his studies to become a priest, he earned his bachelor of arts degree, a licentiate in philosophy degree in 1943 and completed his masters of art degree in philosophy in 1945, all from St. Louis University in St. Louis.
In September 1954, he became a professor of philosophy at St. Louis University, where he remained for 13 years until he took a sabbatical to pursue various research and writing projects. In 1968, he went to Creighton University and spent two years as a research professor before moving to Catholic University of American in Washington D.C. where he taught philosophy from 1970 to 1972. In September 1972, he was hired by Loyola University in Chicago and has served there as a professor of philosophy for the last 29 years.
Throughout his career, the Rev. Sweeney did extensive research on the subject of neoplatonism, a system of thought started by Plotinus. His paper, "Was St. Augustine a Neoplatonist or a Christian? Old Question, New Approach, " was acclaimed at the 11th annual conference of Patristic, Medieval, and Renaissance Studies at Villanova University in October 1985. He was elected president the U.S. section of the International Society of Neoplatonic Studies in 1986.
In addition to his many articles and papers, he published a number of books, including "Metaphysics of Authentic Existentialism, " "Infinity in the Presocratics: A Biographical and Philosophical Study, " "Authentic Metaphysics in an Age of Unreality" "Divine Infinity in Greek and Medieval Thought" and "Christian Philosophy: Greek, Medieval, Modern Developments."
Survivors include a sister, Bernice Cline of Omaha and a sister-in-law, Teresa Sweeney of Greeley.
James Wood
FULDA, Minn. -- James M. Wood, 85, of Fulda, Minn., died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at his daughter's home.
Services will be held at a later date in Kearney. A time of remembering will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Bryan and Linda Lund's home in rural Fulda.
Mr. Wood was born June 9, 1916, in Nebraska. He attended Haigler High School. He later attended Denver Bible Institute in Denver and Sterling College in Sterling, Kan. He attended Central Baptist Theological Seminary in Kansas City, Kan.
He married
Doris Puckett on Aug. 31, 1948, in Lincoln. He served as pastor in Chillicothe, Mo., and Flagler, Colo. The couple moved to Tura, Meghalaya, India, and then to Jorhat, Assam, India, where he and his wife served as missionaries for the American Baptist Church. When they returned to the U.S., they lived in Alliance, Kearney and Grand Island. In 1981, he retired but continued doing interim pastorate work.
In March 2001, they moved to Fulda, Minn., where they lived at Maple View Estates until November 2001, when they moved to their daughter's home in rural Fulda.
He was a member of American Baptist Church. He was active on the board of the Center for Rural Affairs in Nebraska. He enjoyed fishing and golfing.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen Wood of Denver and Linda and Bryan Lund of Fulda; two sons and daughters-in-law, Paul and Morna Wood of Chennal, India, and Bill and Pat Wood of Kearney; nine grandchildren; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Alice Shaftstall of LaJunta, Colo., and Mary and Delmar Stevens of Lincoln; a brother-in-law, Arsenio Lewis of Lincoln; and two sisters-in-law, Donna Wood of California and Jewel Wood of Canon City, Colo.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Paul and John Wood, and a sister, Ruth Lewis.
June Schreiner
June C. Schreiner, 72, of Grand Island died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Kleine Funeral Home Chapel. Richard Fritz will officiate. A private burial will be held at a later date in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mrs. Schreiner was born June 1, 1929, in Grand Island to George and Ruth (Frank) Linaberry. She was raised and attended school in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island Senior High.
She married
Donald Schreiner on Oct. 9, 1951. The couple celebrated their 50th anniversary this year. She worked at St. Francis Medical Center in the baby wing and later worked for K mart.
She was a member of Jehovah's Witness Kingdom Hall in Grand Island. She was an avid reader and enjoyed yellow roses and being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Steven and Elaine Schreiner of Grand Island; two daughters and sons-in-law, Lori Jo and Duane Bebee, and Margare and Charles Paggi, all of Grand Island; a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Sherry L. and Ron Summers of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and two sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty and Maurice Olson of Fort Myers, Fla., and Charlene and Phil Stuart of Brandon, Fla.
She was preceded in death by an infant son, George Schreiner and a daughter, Linda S. Brundage.
Taylor Grieves

CENTRAL CITY -- Taylor Marie Grieves, the 2-month-old daughter of Russell Grieves Jr. and Jessica Sumovich, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City. The Deacon Robert Flesch will officiate.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Thursday at the funeral home.
Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Taylor was born Oct. 3, 2001.
Survivors include her parents; one brother, Russell Lee Grieves, III; grandparents, Keith and Rhonda Cain of Central City, Russell Lee Grieves Sr. of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Terri Varah of Lincoln; and great-grandparents, Lawrence and Mary Fishler and Patsy Baker, all of Central City and Patricia Grieves of Amenia, N.D.
