Norman Reardon
ST. EDWARD -- Norman J. Reardon, 69, of St. Edward died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Boone County Health Center in Albion after suffering an apparent heart attack at his home.
The Catholic funeral mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist-Presbyterian Church in St. Edward. The Rev. Jim Novotny will officiate. Burial will be in the St. Edward Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward and after 7 p.m. at the church with a 7:30 p.m. wake service.
Bill Sahlie
ARCADIA -- Bill Sahlie, 81, of Arcadia died Monday, Dec. 10, 2001, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln.
Services are pending at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Katherine Scholl
PETERSBURG -- Katherine E. Scholl, 84, of Petersburg died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in Petersburg. The Revs. Jerel Scholl and Frank Baumert will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion and will continue at 6:30 p.m. at the church with a 7 p.m. wake service.
Melvin Sims
95, Mechanic
AURORA -- Melvin C. Sims, 95, of Aurora, formerly of Giltner, died Sunday, Dec. 9, 2001, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Giltner. The Rev. Nora Leeds will officiate. Burial will be in the Giltner Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora.
Mr. Sims was born April 10, 1906, in Hamilton County to Claude and Rosa (Luthy) Sims. He grew up on a farm between Giltner and Phillips and attended country school through the eighth grade. He worked on his parent's farm.
He married
Leola Louise Griffin on June 18, 1932, in Grand Island. He was a mechanic. He worked for Hamilton County maintenance in Giltner for several years. He owned an auto repair shop in Giltner, then later went to work in Grand Island for Diers Ford and Priest Truck Service.
He returned to Giltner to work for the Giltner Co-op as a mechanic before he retired. His wife died June 15, 1989.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Giltner. In his spare time he enjoyed reading and working in his garden.
Survivors include a son, Richard Sims of Grand Island; two daughters and a son-in-law, Rosemarie Consbruck of Juniata and Carol and Jody LaBrie of Doniphan; a daughter-in-law, Joyce Sims Grimminger of Chapman; 14 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Cecil Sims of Aurora.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a son, Jerry Sims, a grandchild and two sisters, Wilma Olson and Bernice Hoffmaster.
Vera Taylor
78, Farmer
BURWELL -- Vera Evelyn Taylor, 78, of Burwell died Saturday, Dec. 8, 2001, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at First Christian Church in Burwell. The Rev. Rolly Salts will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to Hospice.
Mrs. Taylor was born February 6, 1923, in southern Holt County on a farm to Dewey and Hazel (Demary) Maring. With her brother, she spent most of her childhood living with her grandfather, Logan Maring.
She married
Hubert Taylor on Nov. 15, 1941, in Greeley. Shortly after their marriage, the couple moved to a farm 17 miles northeast of Burwell in Garfield County in the Eastside School District. They remained on the farm until 1977, when they moved to their current location six miles east of Burwell, where they enjoyed their retirement years.
She was a member of American Red Cross, election board and Midvale Social Club. She enjoyed her children, dancing, dance music, talking on the telephone and flower and vegetable gardening. She also enjoyed watching birds at her feeders in her later years, especially cardinals.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Vera Marie Gideon of Burwell and Taylor Meyer of Sarasota, Fla.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Lynn and Robin Taylor of Yankton, S.D., and Lyman Taylor of Lincoln; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, and a brother and sister-in-law, Hubert "Shorty" and Viola Maring of Washburn, Mo.
He was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Jack Gideon.
Doris Hudson
SUPERIOR -- Doris Hudson, 87, of Superior died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 in Superior.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior. The Rev. Dorthea Fairbanks will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery in Superior.
Visitation was held Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Hudson was born Sept. 5, 1914, in Oak to Henry Schultz and Pearl Seidle. She attended school at Sandy Nob, near Bostwick, and graduated from Superior High School in 1933.
She married
W. Edward Hudson on March 31, 1941, in Topeka, Kan. She lived in Bostwick and Superior most of her life.
She was a member of the Sunnyside Club, Rural Social Circle, Couples Pinochle Card Club and was a 4-H Leader. She enjoyed gardening and flowers and spent many hours baking pies and cooking at the Leslie Hotel.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Floyd Rothfuss of Omaha and Carol and Leslie Warneking of Superior; four grandchildren including Cindy Miller of Grand Island; and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and a brother, Gerald Schultz.
Cecil Carpenter
73, Mechanic
DELTA, Colo. -- Cecil C. Carpenter, 73 of Delta, Colo., died Wednesday, Dec. 10, 2001, at his home.
Services were Monday at Taylor Funeral Home Service Chapel in Delta. The Rev. Donald C. "Pat" Malone officiated. Burial will be private.
Memorials are suggested to Colorado Chapter of American Diabetes Association in Denver.
Mr. Carpenter was born April 26, 1928, at Amelia to Elliot and Audrey (Sigman) Carpenter. He spent his childhood in Burwell and graduated from high school there in 1944.
He married
Eleanor Shockley in 1946.
He married
Patricia Tyler in 1958.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He retired in 1988 from IBM after 25 years of service, where he had been a mechanic. He had also spent several years as a truck driver. Prior to moving to Delta 10 years ago, he had lived in the Denver-Boulder area for 30 years and had at one time lived in Tucson, Ariz., for a period of 10 years.
He held a private pilot's license for more than 20 years and was knowledgeable about aviation. He enjoyed making model airplanes, was an avid reader and loved watching the history channel on television. He was a member of Coffee Club at C.J.'s in Delta.
Survivors include three daughters, Jeanette Roberts of Delta, Christine Armstead of Phoenix, and Sandi Reeves of Seattle; seven grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four brothers and sisters-in-law, Gene and Tamara Carpenter of Elko, Nev., Rex and Jonadyne Carpenter of Grand Island, Bob and Kathy Carpenter of Las Cruces, N.M., and Denny and Maureen Carpenter of Lincoln; and three sisters and a brother-in-law, Irene East of St. Charles, Mo., Vivian Nixon of Pinelles Park, Fla., and Sherry and Ken Freadhoff of Las Cruces, N.M.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Sylvia Culver and Sharon Slosser, and two sisters, Elayne Gould and Dion Nissen.
