U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

James Snyder

FULLERTON -- James D. Snyder, 86, of Fullerton, died Wednesday, Sept. 5, 2001, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Fullerton. The Rev. Valjean Warman will officiate.

There will be no visitation. Burial will be at a later date.

Palmer Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Snyder was born on Feb. 11, 1915, at Concordia, Kan., to George and Dessie (White) Snyder. At an early age, he moved to Omaha where he grew up and attended schools. He worked as a self-contractor painter for 50 years in Iowa, Colorado and Nebraska.

He married Audrey Folsum on Feb. 25, 1922, in Fullerton. They lived there until his death.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Fullerton. He enjoyed painting, woodworking and mechanic work.

Survivors include his wife; three son and daughter-in-law, Dale C. and Mary Snyder of Omaha, Charles Carlentine of San Diego, Calif., and Sam Carlentine of Santa Maria, Calif.; a daughter and son-in-law, Sonja and Pete Dittmar of Littleton, Colo.; eight grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and two sisters and brother-in-law, Ruth and Anton Kozel Jr. of Omaha and Madelein Duchess of Ocean Springs, Miss.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Russell.

Alfred Sweet

CLARKS -- Alfred G. Sweet, 83, of Clarks died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at his home near Clarks.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church in Central City. The Rev. Brad Rick will officiate. Burial will be in the Clarks Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City.

Memorials are suggested to the St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Mr. Sweet was born Aug. 31, 1918, in Clarks to Alfred and Sarah (Sharman) Sweet. He grew up on a farm north of Clarks and graduated from Clarks High School in 1936. On Feb. 10, 1942, he joined the U.S. Army during World War II.

He married Rita A. Goerl on Sept. 26, 1944, in Grand Island. The couple lived on the farm near Clarks where he farmed and fed cattle all his life.

He was a member of St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church and was a past president of the Clarks School board. He was a member of the Voter's Assembly and a trustee for St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church.

He enjoyed attending cattle sales and driving teams of horses, especially for kindergarten kids through Clarks.

Survivors include his wife; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Eddie A. Sweet and Jack J. and Coleen Sweet, all of Clarks; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sally A. and Jack Neel of Clarks and Susan and Eddie Sweet Grossi of Rohnert Park, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Ethel M. Sweet of Clarks and Alice M. Hirschbach of South Sioux City.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, George, Frank, Joe, and Eddie Sweet; three sisters, Ellen Sloan, Florence Morgan and Lucy Fern Sweet; and a daughter-in-law, Sue Sweet.

'Bill' Swindell

HOLDREGE -- William E. "Bill" Swindell, 60, of Holdrege, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at Edgewood Vista in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege. The Rev. Kenton Birtell will officiate. Burial will be in the Prairie Home cemetery in Holdrege with military honors.

Visitation will be from 1 to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family greeting friends from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Nelson-Harris Funeral Home in Holdrege.

Memorials are suggested to Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church.

Mr. Swindell was born Feb. 18, 1941, at Orleans to William "Edward" and Edith (Williams) Swindell. He was baptized in the Atlanta Methodist Church in Atlanta on April 17, 1952, and confirmed into the Lutheran faith on July 2, 1967, at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church in Holdrege. He attended school in rural Phelps County, then Atlanta, and later graduating from Holdrege High School in 1958. After his education, he served in the U.S. Army as a military policeman from 1962 to 1964. After his honorable discharge in December 1964, he returned to Holdrege where he was employed by the city of Holdrege.

He married Janice M. Hohner on July 16, 1966. He continued to work for the city of Holdrege until June 1998 when he retired due to his failing health.

He was an active member of Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church where he was a past elder and trustee. He was an avid Husker football and New York Yankees baseball fan. He was also a member of the Holdrege bowling league.

Survivors include his wife; a son, William C. Swindell of Lincoln; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Jo and Ray Skrdlant of Doniphan and Evelyn and Lynn Johnson of Loup City; and a brother and sister-in-law, Eldon and Marilyn Swindell of Omaha.

Thelma Weeks

RAVENNA -- Thelma E. Weeks, 85, of Ravenna, formerly of Gibbon, died Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Family graveside services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Gibbon Riverside Cemetery. Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Gibbon Baptist Church. The Rev. Bob Flynn will officiate.

Visitation will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Godberson Mortuary in Gibbon.

Memorials are suggested to the Maranatha Bible Camp or other missionary projects.

Mrs. Weeks was born July 5, 1916, on a farm south of Gibbon to Chester A. and Elsie M. (Lowell) Smith. She grew up in that area, attending rural Gibbon and Shelton schools. She also attended public schools in Gibbon and Shelton, graduating in 1934 from Gibbon High School.

She married Reo V. Weeks on Aug. 18, 1935, on her family farm near Gibbon. The couple lived near Roscoe. They lived in various Central Nebraska communities as well as in Texas and Kansas where her husband's work took them. They moved back to Gibbon in 1970 where they lived until moving to the Seneca Sunrise Living unit in Ravenna in July of last year.

She was a member of the Gibbon Baptist Church and other missionary organizations.

Survivors include her husband; four sons and daughters-in-law, Rollin and Wendy of Torrance, Calif., Reo C. and Marilee of Gibbon, David and Deloris of Lincoln and Robert and Ava of Agana, Guam; four daughters and sons-in-law, Elain and Don Curry of Ponca, Jean and Clem Hewitt of Ravenna, Dorothy and Rex Beam of Botswana, Africa, and Marilyn and Wes Roe of Central City; a brother and sister-in-law, Elton and Anita Smith of Gibbon; four sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary Boyd, Bernice Slack and Doreatha and Bob Clevenger, all of Gibbon, and Bernidean and Max Wilke of Potter; 30 grandchildren; 50 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a brother and two sisters.

Jack Lee

BEDFORD, Ind. -- Jack D. Lee, 73, of Bedford, Ind., formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Oct. 7, 2001, at Bedford Regional Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home. The Rev. Robert Phillips and the Rev. Darrell Flynn will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Run cemetery in Lawrence County, Ind.

Visitation was Tuesday at the funeral home.

Mr. Lee was born Feb. 12, 1928, at Bedford, Ind., to Thomas L. and Roxie (Smith) Lee.

He married Etta M. Englehaupt. They were later divorced.

He married Zellma L. Grubbs Spinks on Dec. 25, 1975, in Orleans, Ind. He was a truck driver. He retired from Peake, Inc.

He was a member of Bedford Boat and Sportmen's Club, Teamsters Union, an avid fisherman and a World War II veteran.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Rick Spinks of Bedford, Ind., Byron Wilson of Grand Island; Jack H. Lee of Bedford, Ind., and Nathan Lee of Bedford, Ind.; six daughters, Linda Kavanaugh of Linton, Ind., Kathy Ruyan of Ellettaville, Ind., Cindy Inman of Linton, Ind., Ramona Stultz of Bedford, Ind., Sarah Stewart of Indianapolis, Ind., and Shelia Terrell of Bedford, Ind.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Juanita Meadows of Bedford, Ind.

He was preceded in death by a son, Jamie D. Lee; and three brothers, Bill, Jim and Bob Lee.

Lucille Matheson

Lucille A. Matheson, 83, of Grand Island, died Monday, Oct. 8, 2001, at Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center.

Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.

Candelaria Garcia

Infant

ST. PAUL -- Candelaria M. Garcia, infant daughter of Dorothy Ruiz and Alfredo Garcia, died Wednesday, Oct. 3, 2001, at the Children's Hospital in Omaha.

Private family services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul. The Rev. Larry Lepper officiated. Burial was in Elmwood cemetery in St. Paul.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Survivors include her parents, a sister, Alicia DeBraal, a brother, Adrian Garcia, all of St. Paul; grandparents, Ronald and Linda Thompson of St. Paul, Marie and Sanchez Garcia of Grand Island and Steven DeBraal of Trumball; and great-grandparents, Bob and Shirley Thompson of St. Paul, Rita DeBraal of Wood River and Lillie Stout of Grand Island.

She was preceded in death by her great-grandfathers, James DeBraal and Floyd Stout.
