'Ike' Elwood
Ira "Ike" D. Elwood Sr., 65, of Grand Island died Sunday, Sept. 2, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Congregational Church. The Rev. Lonnie Logan will officiate. Burial will be at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Lincoln Memorial cemetery in Lincoln. The Rev. Steve Raddatz will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Kleine Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family in his name.
Mr. Elwood was born July 15, 1936, at Red Oak, Iowa, to Joseph and Gladys (Carper) Elwood. He was raised and graduated from high school in Elliott, Iowa.
He started his own trucking business in Iowa before moving to Grand Island, where he continued his business. He was a truck driver for 44 years, and worked in construction for four years.
He married
Sandra Vogt on Dec. 14, 1979, in Grand Island.
He was a member of the Grand Island Saddle Club. He enjoyed working in his yard and golfing.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters and sons-in-law, Stacy and Jerry Umbenhower of Lincoln, Sue and Kirk McConnell of Bolivar, Mo., and Jackie and Don Grassia of McCook; three sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Christi Elwood of Stanton, Iowa, Kent and Vicki Elwood of Ft. Dodge, Iowa, and Rusty and Jan Elwood of Villisca, Iowa; 19 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; six brothers and five sisters-in-law, Bill and Loretta Elwood of Grandview, Texas, Gordon and Mary Elwood of Glenwood, Iowa, Joe and Dorothy Elwood and Ed and Vickie Elwood, all of Elliott, Iowa, Bob Elwood of Lincoln and Dale and Janie Elwood of Red Oak, Iowa; and four sisters and brothers-in-law, Mary and Morris Kille of Dumas, Texas, Jean and Charlie Pope of Omaha, Linda and Vern Gute of Modale, Iowa, and Judy and Bob Blay of Villisca, Iowa.
David Pugh
David L. Pugh, 47, of Grand Island died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001, at his home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at First Church of the Nazarene in Grand Island. The Rev. Dominic Pecoraro and Dennis Mudloff will officiate.
There will be no visitation. His body was cremated.
All Faiths Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Pugh was born May 10, 1954, at Grand Island to Myron D. Pugh and Karlene G. Olson. He was raised in Grand Island. He attended Northwest High School and later lived in Oshkosh where he attended school for one year.
He married
Mary Ann Jones on April 22, 1978, in Grand Island.
He worked at Monfort in Grand Island. The couple later moved to Austin where he worked in maintenance in the hotel business. He moved back to Grand Island in June 2000 where he worked at Overhead Door.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, photography and watching sports. He also enjoyed attending black powder shoots.
Survivors include two sons, Andrew and Christopher Pugh, a stepson, Anthony Jones and a daughter, Nicolette Pugh, all of Austin; mother and stepfather, Karlene and Vernon "Smokey" Larson of Doniphan; stepmother, Barbara Pugh of Seward; three sisters, Janet Cole of Phillips, Kathy Higgins of Colorado Springs, Colo., and Cindy Springstell of Grand Island; and three brothers, Larry Larson of Grand Island, Vern Larson of Giltner and Jay Larson of Omaha.
He was preceded in death by his father, Myron and a brother, Gary Pugh.
Marie Cetak
ORD -- Marie Cetak, 77, of Ord died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Ord Christian Church. The Rev. Mike Chase will officiate. Burial will be in the Ord Bohemian Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to Ord Christian Church Building Fund or the Valley County Hospital.
Wallace Hendrickson
BROKEN BOW -- Wallace Hendrickson, 86, of Broken Bow died Sunday, Sept. 2 at the Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Broken Bow. The Dr. Charles Spence and Rev. Bob Winn will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to Custer County Hospice and Broken Bow Ambulance Fund.
Mr. Hendrickson was born March 14, 1915, at Chokio, Minn., to Abner and Roseannah (Smith) Hendrickson. When he was 3, his family moved to Sodtown by train. They later moved to Garden City, Kan., where he started school. When he was five, he harnessed a team of horses and drove the school teacher to school.
The family also moved to Litchfield and Weiser, Idaho, and then back to the Sodtown and Litchfield area where he finished the eighth grade. He then left school to help on the farm and work for neighbors and various farmers.
He married
Emma M. Peterson of Swiss Valley on Nov. 4, 1936, in Broken Bow. The couple then left for Torrington, Wash., driving through a winter storm. He and his brother worked digging potatoes. His wife was the hired girl. They returned to Broken Bow and lived with his wife's parents before moving to the Nick Smets farm. In April 1942, they rented a farm in Swiss Valley that they bought in 1946.
In September 1983 he and his wife retired and moved to Broken Bow. In March 2001 he became ill and moved to Sandhills Manor Nursing Home.
He was a member on the school board for Swiss Valley and Rose Valley.
Survivors include his wife; five sons and daughters-in-law, Allen and Dee Hendrickson, Ted and Mary Hendrickson, Bill and Reva Hendrickson and Don and Karen Hendrickson, all of Broken Bow and John and Nancy Hendrickson of Lincoln; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marlene and Cliff Rapp and Karen and John Nehls, all of Broken Bow; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; a brother, Don Hendrickson of Yuma, Ariz.; and two sisters-in-law, Iola Purinton of Broken Bow and Dorothy Dutcher of Chandler, Ariz.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lela Hendrickson; a grandchild; a brother, Lyle Hendrickson; and four sisters, Hazel McAlvey, Bernice Blythe, Helen Evans and Blache Ryan.
Viola Jacobs
NORTH LOUP -- Viola Jacobs, 97, of North Loup died Monday, Sept. 3, 2001, at the Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at North Loup United Methodist Church. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Burial will be at the Hillside cemetery at North Loup.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to North Loup Popcorn Days, North Loup Rescue Unit or the Valley County Hospital Foundation.
Margarite Line
BROKEN BOW -- Margarite M. Line, 90, formerly of Broken Bow, died Sunday, Sept. 2, 2001 in Clarinda, Iowa.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow. Dr. Charles Spence will officiate. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Prairie Pioneer Center in Broken Bow.
Mrs. Line was born Jan. 20, 1911 in Berwyn to Ulrick and Cor (Talbot) Sorensen. She attended school at Berwyn and graduated from Berwyn High School in 1929. She attended Kearney State Teachers College and earned her teaching certificate.
She taught at New Hope rural school for two years and a country school near Westerville for four years.
She married
Thomas Line on March 21, 1936 in Holdrege. They lived in Broken Bow all of their married
life. She worked at the ASCS office in Broken Bow for 28 years.
She was a member of the United Methodist Church in Berwyn for 50 years.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Barbara Jean and Howard Teuscher of Clearmont, Mo.; two sisters, Hazel Butler and Gracie Knapp, both of Berwyn; two grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in April of 1981.
