Peter Dibbern
CAIRO -- Peter A. Dibbern, 78, of Cairo died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at his home southwest of Cairo.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Christ Lutheran Church in Cairo. The Rev. William Voelker will officiate. Burial will be in Burwick cemetery southeast of Cairo.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the church.
Apfel Funeral Home in Cairo is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mr. Dibbern was born Aug. 27, 1922, on a farm southwest of Cairo to Herman H. and Margaret E. (Holtdorf) Dibbern. He was baptized Sept. 11. 1932, in the home of his parents and later confirmed March 21, 1937, at Evangelical Lutheran Church. He attended school at District 37 and graduated from Cairo High School in 1943. He was drafted into the Army in 1945 and served in Puerto Rico until his discharge due to his mother's death in 1946.
He married
Angeline R. Knoepfel on April 6, 1947, in Cairo. The couple moved to a farm southwest of Cairo where they lived and farmed until his death.
He was a member of the Hall County Farm Bureau, Christ Lutheran Church in Cairo, District 14 school and American Legion Post of Cairo. He and his wife celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 1997. He enjoyed camping and traveling in their RV, going to music festivals, fishing and John Deere tractors.
Survivor include his wife; six sons and daughters-in-law, Steven and Kim Dibbern of Beloit, Kan., Merlin Dibbern, Tim and Janet Dibbern and Loren and Julie Dibbern, all of Cairo, Theodore "Ted" and Connie Dibbern of Wood River and Peter and Valerie Dibbern, who are stationed with the Air Force in Alaska; three daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Steven Hansen of Cairo, Christie and Michael Hybl of Lincoln and Angela and Robb McLean of Aurora; 23 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, William of Wood River and Keith of Overland Park, Kan.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Marion Brandt.

NORTH LOUP -- Steven Jorgensen, 78, of North Loup died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.

BURWELL -- Louis Mach, 79, of Burwell died at his home northwest of Burwell.

Caroljean "Jean" A. Palu, 68, of Grand Island died Monday, August 20, 2001, at her home.
Services are pending with Curran Funeral Chapel.
Helen Yantzie
BROKEN BOW -- Helen I. Yantzie, 80, of Broken Bow died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at Sandhills Manor in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow. Burial will be in the Broken Bow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the Custer County Hospice.
Mrs. Yantzie was born Dec. 21, 1920, to Roy and Pauline (Skirkey) Cox. Her father died when she was 6 weeks old. She was raised in the home of her grandparents, Francis and Bessie Skirkey, and later lived with her aunt and uncle, Paul and Kathryn Myers. She was baptized in the Mennonite Church north of Broken Bow. In recent years, she had attended the Church of God in Broken Bow.
She married
Homer Yantzie on Nov. 25, 1940, in Davenport, Iowa. The couple spent many years farming around the Broken Bow area until 1967, when they purchased the local Western Store, which became Slim's Western Wear. They operated the store for 16 years. After retirement from the store, they spent several years traveling.
Survivors include her husband; two sons and daughters-in-law, Larry and Gerry of Broken Bow and Bob and Linda of Taylor; three daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Allen Eggleston of Broken Bow, Linda and Ron Kratzer of Broken Bow and Judy and Mike Diefenbaugh of Merna; 16 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; a sister, Bessie Gremm of Acampa, Calif.; and three stepsisters, Katie Safranek of Merna, Vanetta Andersen of Broken Bow and Dona Burnsworth of Barnesville, Minn.
She was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Mildred; two stepbrothers, Ronald and Harry Meyers; and a stepsister, Joy Koblo.
Leonard Van Pelt
ARCHER -- Leonard D. Van Pelt, 94, of Archer died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at his home.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Fairview United Methodist Church near Central City. The Rev. Rich Savage will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wagner Funeral Home in Central City.
Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, the Diabetics Associations or the donor's choice.
Mr. Van Pelt was born March 31, 1907, in Archer to Mayo and Nora (Eckles) Van Pelt. He grew up on the family farm and attended school in Archer, graduating with the first class of students there.
He married
Vera A. Woodward on Oct. 29, 1925, in Archer. The couple lived and farmed in the area all their lives.
Mr. Van Pelt was a member of the fair board and the Archer United Methodist Church until 1974 when the church burned down. He then became a member of the Fairview United Methodist Church and serves as treasurer for the District 43 school board.
He loved baseball and was an avid Husker fan. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren play sports. He also enjoyed reading, playing horseshoes and playing cards with his family and friends.
Survivors include his wife; four sons and daughters-in-law, Dewitt and Norma Van Pelt of Clarks, Dwaine and Carmen Van Pelt of Archer, Roger and Edith Van Pelt of Dannebrog and Steve and Vicki Van Pelt of Archer; five daughters and three sons-in-law, Betty Duncan of Grand Island, Rhoda Seiler of Axtell, Sharlene and Gerald Riese of Grand Island, Nora and Virgil Lindner of Archer and Judith and Stewart Anderson of Axtell; 39 grandchildren; 79 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, three sisters, four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Melvin Friedrichsen
COZAD -- Melvin R. Fried-richsen, 80, of Cozad, formerly of Grand Island, died Sunday, Aug. 19, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home in Grand Island. The Rev. Jim Henry will officiate. Burial will be in Cameron cemetery in Hall County.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Friedrichsen was born June 18, 1921, in Palmer to Henry P. and Margaret A. (Wiecks) Friedrichsen. He grew up in St. Paul, where he attended Bunker Hill School. He helped his father on the family farm.
He married
Mary E. Miller on Aug. 31, 1945, in Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island, where he was employed by Christensen Concrete Products, Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant and later the Block Co. His wife died on Dec. 4, 1995.
Survivors include four sons and daughter-in-law, Ray Friedrichsen, Melvin Friedrichsen Jr., Roger Friedrichsen and Jimmy and Vicki Friedrichsen, all of Grand Island; three daughters and son-in-law, Bonnie and Dennis Lechleitner of Cozad, Joyce Ogden of Grand Island, and Ruby Dorsey of Cozad; 10 grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Harlan and Betty Friedrichsen of Cozad; and a sister and brother-in-law, Maxine and Dale Schmidt of St. Libory.
She was preceded in death by his wife; a daughter, Barbara Jean; and two brothers, Irvin and Harry Friedrichsen.
Leona Mays
BLUE HILL -- Leona V. Mays, 96, of Blue Hill Care Center, formerly of Hastings, died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Blue Hill Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Butler-Volland Chapel. The Rev. Tom Murray will officiate. Burial will be in Juniata cemetery in Juniata.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Tuesday and 9 a.m. to service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Juniata Cemetery.
Mrs. Mays was born Aug. 20, 1904, at Skidmore, Miss., to Milton and Minnie (Yetter) Rounds.
She married
Ralph Mays on March 9, 1920, at First Christian Church in Hastings. Her husband died Dec. 19, 1966. She moved from Roseland to Hastings in 1966 and was a housekeeper and a member of First Christian Church, the Garden Club at Good Samaritan Village, A.A.R.P. and a lifetime member of Eagles Auxiliary.
Survivors include a daughter, Viva Trausch of Hastings; two brothers, Morris Rounds of Eugene, Ore., and LaVerne Rounds of Sedona, Ariz.; 19 grandchildren; 43 great-grandchildren; and 41 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two sons, Clayton and Clyde Mays; two daughters, Grace Schmitz and Lois Dubberly; a great-grandchild; a brother; and two sisters.
