Norman Boeka
Norman W. Boeka, 84, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at Wedgewood Care Center.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Mildred Huggard
Mildred L. Huggard, 83, a Lakeview Nursing Home resident, died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001.
Mrs. Huggard's body will be cremated. There will be no visitation.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Quandt will officiate.
Frank Kucera Sr.
Frank J. Kucera Sr., 79, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at the Grand Island Veterans Home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Frank Hoelck will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island with military rites given by Fort Riley, Kan., honor guard.
Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Friday with family receiving friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mr. Kucera was born Sept. 21, 1922, at Schuyler to Frank J. and Anna M. (Bulin) Kucera. He grew up and attended school in Howells, graduating from high school in 1942. He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 20, 1942, serving during World War II. He received a Purple Heart. He was discharged March 14, 1946.
He married
Bonnie Vavra in 1951 in Holdrege.
He married
Sally Babe on Sept. 21, 1976, at Omaha. Later, the couple lived in Grand Island. He was a dispatcher for the Nebraska State Patrol for 36 years, retiring in 1984.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, the Platt-Duetsche, VFW, Eagles and American Legion.
Survivors include his wife; three sons and daughters-in-law, Frank "Corky" Jr. and Theresa Kucera, Stephen and Rona Kucera and Stuart and Brenda Kucera, all of Grand Island; a daughter, Kathy Kucera of Aurora, Colo.; six grandchildren; a stepson and stepdaughter-in-law, Kevin and Colleen Purcell of Omaha; a stepdaughter, Lori Bucholz of Grand Island; seven step grandchildren; and three step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Stanley Karl.
Agnes McGee
Agnes A. McGee, 94, of Grand Island died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Wedgewood Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home. The Rev. Del Roper will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday with family receiving friends from 4 to 6 p.m.
Mary Ann Scherbarth
Mary Ann Scherbarth, 56, of Grand Island died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell. The Rev. Rolly Salts will officiate. Burial will be in Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Barbara Sommer
Barbara S. Sommer, 51, of Grand Island died Monday, Nov. 5, 2001, at Minden.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. Jerry Quandt will officiate.
There will be no visitation. Her body was cremated.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mrs. Sommer was born July 5, 1950, at Hastings to Joe and Mary (Serf) Weiler. She attended St. Cecilia High School, graduating in 1969. She attended University of Nebraska-Lincoln after graduation. She worked for the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Grand Island. She then worked for Monfort's in the medical center for eight years and was a licensed EMT. She worked for Stat Medical for five years. She was working for the Grand Island Clinic handling insurance claims.
She enjoyed reading, camping, jigsaw puzzles and making crafts and wreaths.
Survivors include her husband, Arnie; a stepson, Arnie Sommer III of Hastings; a brother, Joe Weiler of Topeka, Kan.; and two sisters, Nancy Grawe of Quincy, Ill., and Mary Ann Kinman of Oshkosh.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Patrick Birkby
GREELEY -- Patrick Birkby, 49, of Greeley died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at his home.
Services are pending with T.J. Finn and Sons Mortuary in Greeley.
Gail Dworak
ORD -- Gail Dworak, 74, of Ord died Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2001, at Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church in Ord. The Rev. Jim Miller will officiate. Burial will be in Ord City Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to Valley County Hospital Foundation or Ladies Auxiliary VFW.
Mrs. Dworak was born May 19, 1927, near Ansley to Robert and Hazel (Norman) Hall. The family moved to Ord where she was raised and attended school, graduating from Ord High School in 1945. She taught rural school in Valley County.
She married
George J. Dworak on June 21, 1946, in Marysville, Kan. The couple lived in Ord where they operated the Ord Bowling Alley and owned and operated the Ord Hotel. In 1964, they moved to Lincoln. She worked in advertising at J.C. Penney Co. in Lincoln. The couple spent time in Lincoln, Ord and Sherman Lake. Her husband died Aug. 9, 1986. She returned to Ord in April 1987.
She was a member of Ord Ladies Auxiliary VFW, Nebraska Democratic Central Committee and Valley County Democrats. She enjoyed her grandchildren, sewing, camping, gardening, Husker football and was an avid baseball fan, especially for the Cubs and Braves.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Marlys Dworak of Ord and Dick and Terri Dworak of Lincoln; a daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Darrell Dickman of Maxwell; six grandchildren; and two sisters, Norma Rich of LeRoy, Minn., and Carol Simpson of Ord.
She was preceded in death by her husband.
Clifford Hoshaw
BROKEN BOW -- Clifford C. Hoshaw, 70, of Broken Bow died Thursday, Nov. 8, 2001, at Heritage Hall Nursing Home in Broken Bow.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday in Westerville cemetery in Westerville with military rites. The Rev. James Stark will officiate.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Govier Brothers Mortuary Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to Custer County Hospice.
Mr. Hoshaw was born Jan. 10, 1931, at Broken Bow to Elmer C. "Bud" and Mona (Clay) Hoshaw. The family lived on a farm at Westerville.
He entered the U.S. Navy in 1948 and was discharged in 1950. He returned to Broken Bow and then moved to Idaho to help his uncle on his ranch. He moved to California where he worked as a trucker. He retired to Broken Bow to care for his parents.
He was a member of Moose Lodge at North Platte.
Survivors include three sons, Jeff Hoshaw of The Woodlands, Texas; Clifford "Kip" Hoshaw Jr. and Fred Hoshaw, both of Butte, Mont.; a daughter, Elaine Willis of Willis, Texas; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Gary.
