Cecil Jacquot
BROKEN BOW -- Cecil X. Jacquot, 87, of Broken Bow, formerly of rural Merna, died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Jennie Melham Memorial Medical Center in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo with the Rev. Mark Maresh officiating. Burial will be in the Dale Catholic Cemetery.
Visitation is from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with a wake service at 6 p.m. Thursday.
Memorials are suggested to St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo.
Mr. Jacquot was born Dec. 24, 1913, west of Merna to George and Mary (Mohatt) Jacquot. He grew up on the family farm that was homesteaded by his grandfather, Nicholas Jacquot. He attended Sunshine School District 54 and Merna High School, graduating in 1930. He worked on the family farm with his father and brothers.
On Oct. 26, 1937, he married
Meta Steinmeyer at Giltner. They lived in the Merna area for 10 years, later moving to the Jacquot home place, where they farmed and ranched. Mrs. Jacquot died Jan. 27, 2001.
He was a member of St. Anselm's Catholic Church in Anselmo and 4th Degree Knights of Columbus, receiving the Knight of the Year Award in 1961. He served on the rural school board for nine years and the Anselmo-Merna school board for 15 years, serving as president during the reorganization and building of the new Anselmo-Merna High School. He was also a 4-H Club leader, a member of the Custer County Extension Board, Broken Bow Elks Lodge and the Dale cemetery Board. In 1967, he received a Soil Conservation Award.
Survivors include five daughters, Patsy Downey of Merna, Jeanne (Mrs. Bill) Miller of Anchorage, Alaska, Marita (Mrs. K.C.) Gottschalk of Broken Bow, Mary Coffman of Broken Bow and Kathryn (Mrs. Michael) Sledge of Omaha; one son, Bill of Loveland, Colo.; 29 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Bernice (Mrs. R.J.) Miller of Broken Bow.
He was preceded in death by his wife; one son, Jerry; an infant daughter, Mary Elaine; two brothers, Harold and Charles; and one sister, Geraldine Lacher-Spanel.
Berniece Schumm
CAIRO -- Berniece J. Schumm, 77, of Cairo died Sunday, March 18, 2001, at the BryanLGH East Medical Center in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church with the Rev. Don Larmore officiating. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery in Hastings.
Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday with a 7 p.m. rosary at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mrs. Schumm was born on June 16, 1923, in Adams County to Earl J. and Effie J. (Mapes) Hollister. She attended school in Hastings and graduated from Hastings High School in 1941. After her education, she was employed at the Naval Ammunition Depot in Hastings. She was also employed at several restaurants and cafes in Hastings. She then managed the Disabled American Veterans Club in Hastings for several years.
She married
George Schumm on Nov. 23, 1971, in Hastings. She served as Department Commander of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary from 1974 to 1975. She was also an admiral in the Nebraska Navy.
After retiring, she enjoyed traveling throughout the United States.
She was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Survivors include her husband; four sons, Dale Janssen of Norfolk, Va., David Janssen of Cairo, Wendell Janssen of Ft. Collins, Colo., and Wesley Janssen of Loveland, Colo.; two stepsons, Dennis Schumm of Mt. Pleasant, S.C., and Steve Schumm of Jacksonville, Fla.; three stepdaughters, Gloria Park of Bailey, Colo., Marilyn Schumm of Hastings and Bonnie Schumm of Broken Bow; one sister, Lavetta Williams of Grand Island; five grandchildren; seven step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and five step great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by two brothers, Millard and Glenn Hollister.
Gertrude Wise
SHELTON -- Gertrude Wise, 101, of Shelton died Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at the Good Samaritan Center in Gibbon.
Services are pending with Godberson Mortuary of Gibbon-Shelton.
Esther Yilk
HASTINGS -- Esther G. Yilk, 82, of Hastings died Monday, March 19, 2001, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at St. Cecilia's Catholic Church with the Rev. Larry Gyhra officiating. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery in Hastings.
Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Wednesday and from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and also one hour prior to service Friday at the church. A rosary will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to Adams County Cancer Society or Alzheimer's Support Group of Hastings.
Mrs. Yilk was born March 23, 1918, in Hastings to Alfred William and Esther (Bailey) Sorenson. She graduated from Nelson High School in 1935.
She married
Anthony "Tony" Yilk on Oct. 21, 1942. Mr. Yilk died in 1984.
She worked at Woolworths, Allen's Department Store, Crosier Monastery and Sunnyside Home.
She was a member of St. Cecilia's Catholic Church and Altar Society, Community Quilt Guilds, Catholic Daughters and was active in Extension Club.
Survivors include three sons, Tom of Hastings, Jack of Wood River and Mike of Hastings; three daughters, Mary (Mrs. Donis) Perrott of Los Angeles, Calif., Diane Snider of Kearney and Nancy Yilk of Sacramento, Calif.; one brother, Frank Sorenson of Macomb, Ill.; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one brother, William; one son, Bob; and a daughter, Pat Horacek.
'Clint' Hardy
JOHNSON LAKE -- Albert C. "Clint" Hardy, 64, of Johnson Lake died Sunday, March 18, 2001, in Shreveport, La.
Memorial services will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Reynolds-Love Chapel in Lexington.
There will be no visitation. Mr. Hardy was cremated.
Mr. Hardy was born Feb. 6, 1937, at Mullen to Earl R. and Agnes D. (Hladky) Hardy. He grew up in the Sandhills of Nebraska, attending school in Mullen and Chadron. He earned his teaching degree from Chadron State College and taught in a one-room country school south of Whitman.
He enjoyed working around the ranch, horses, rodeos and the cowboy life.
He worked highway construction, and later enjoyed trucking, retiring after many years with Consolidated Freightways.
He was president of the Lakeview Acres Lot Association at Johnson Lake.
Survivors include two brothers, Richard of Port St. Lucie, Fla., and Earl Jr. of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Marjorie Goosic
Marjorie A. Goosic, 68, of Grand Island died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. The Rev. James Schmidt will officiate. Mrs. Goosic's body will be cremated.
Carl Lamm
Carl E. Lamm, 92, of Lebensraum Retirement Home died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church.
Visitation will be one hour before services at the church. Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Edward Lane
Edward T. Lane, 79, of 1518 N. Kimball died Wednesday, March 17, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church. The Rev. Byron Shafer will officiate. Burial will be at 2 p.m. Friday in the Arcadia Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 5 to 7 p.m., Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Lane was born on Oct. 25, 1919, in a sod house on a farm in Sherman County near Arcadia. He attended rural school. He farmed with his parents until entering the U.S. Army in March 1942. He served in the 5th Armored Division in Europe, received the Purple Heart and was discharged in 1946.
He married
Della Henderson on June 7, 1948, at Loup City. They lived in Loup City until moving to Grand Island in 1952. He was a line foreman at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. He retired in 1976 due to failing health.
He was a member of the First Baptist Church and was a former member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion. He collected antique cars and was a member of the Fort Kearney Car Club and the Classic Wheels of Grand Island.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Linda (Mrs. Larry) Kaslon of Hastings and Kathy (Mrs. Bryan) Matejka of Grand Island; three sons, Dennis, Scott and Douglas, all of Grand Island; 15 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Louise (Mrs. Roy) Wooden of Loup City.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Clinton, during World War II.
