Dan Baird
CLAY CENTER -- Dan W. Baird, 59, of Clay Center died Wednesday, Aug. 16, 2000, at BryanLGH Medical Center East in Lincoln.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church in Clay Center. There will be a private family burial.
McLaughlin Funeral Home of Clay Center is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the American Heart Association or Crooked Creek Country Club.
Mr. Baird was born on May 11, 1941, in Gordon to Ralph and Fern (Jenny) Baird. He moved with his parents to Hastings at the age of 2 and to Blue Hill a year and a half later. He graduated in Blue Hill in 1959 as salutatorian. He played in the first Nebraska Shrine Bowl that year.
He married
Janice Goble of Ayr on April 8, 1961. He graduated in 1963 from Hastings College, where he was Student Association president, named to Who's Who, football team captain in 1962 and also played baseball.
He taught from 1963 to 1967 at Hastings Senior High School.
He received a juris doctorate from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1970 and entered private law practice with S.W. Moger in Clay Center. He later practiced law with Ted Griess of Sutton and was his partner for nearly 20 years.
He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Clay Center and served on the church council. He was a member of the Clay Center Community Club and Crooked Creek Country Club. He was city attorney for Clay Center and Harvard.
Mr. Baird was Clay County attorney from 1974 to '79 and deputy county attorney from 1983 until his death. He served on the Clay County Fair Board for eight years and was active in 4-H. He raised and exhibited registered Suffolk sheep for many years.
He coached football and baseball for nearly 30 years and coached the Hastings Braves and Chiefs from 1964 to '69. He was a volunteer football coach at Clay Center High School from 1984 to '91. He was an avid sportsman and member of Ducks Unlimited and Pheasants Forever and worked many years in wildlife enhancement.
Survivors include his wife; one son, Greg of Grand Island; two daughters, Susan (Mrs. Loren) Griess of Sutton and Jennifer (Mrs. Wade) Fleischer of Glenvil; his mother, of Clay Center; one brother, James of Clay Center; and one sister, Ruth Koepke of Blue Hill.
He was preceded in death by his father.
Anna Kisler
OMAHA -- Anna Kisler of Omaha died Saturday, Aug. 12, 2000, at St. Joseph's Villa.
Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Friday at Dworak Mortuary in Omaha.
'Ivy' Nicholson
GOTHENBURG -- Ivadell "Ivy" Nicholson, 91, of Gothenburg died Thursday, Aug. 17, 2000, at the Gothenburg Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Blase Memorial Chapel in Gothenburg.
Memorials are suggested to the Gothenburg Senior Center.
Mrs. Nicholson was born on April 28, 1909, at Gothenburg to Oscar and Millie (Lindstedt) Lundquist. She attended country school north of Gothenburg. She lived in Washington for five years and moved in 1943 to Grand Island, where she worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant during World War II.
After the plant closed, she worked at various cafes and bakeries.
She married
Orville T. Nicholson on June 5, 1960, at Grand Island. After his death in 1981, she moved back to Gothenburg in 1982 and to Hilltop in 1998.
Survivors include one sister, Jerry (Mrs. Marvin) Lambertus of Gothenburg; one brother, Ole "Lottie" Lundquist of Payson, Ariz.; and a special friend, Gladys Stevens of Gothenburg.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers and two sisters.
Edward Saunders
OMAHA -- Edward F. Saunders Jr., 75, of Omaha, a former teacher at Grand Island Senior High, died of a heart attack Tuesday, Aug. 15, 2000, in Omaha.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian UCC Church in Aurora. The Rev. Kevin Killion will officiate. Burial with military honors will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Higby Mortuary in Aurora is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Saunders was born at Exeter to Edward and Ann (Yates) Saunders.
He fought in World War II as a liaison officer in the 91st Infantry and served during three campaigns on the Italian front.
He earned a bachelor of arts from Doane College and a master's degree from Kearney State College.
He married
Betty Grosvenor on Aug. 14, 1949, in Aurora. They just celebrated 51 years of marriage.
Mr. Saunders taught history and social studies at Grand Island Senior High from 1966 to his retirement in 1992. The Grand Island public schools selected him as a candidate for the Christa McAuliff Award.
He previously served as personnel director and chief accounting officer for St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Lincoln and was co-owner of the Story County Credit Bureau in Ames, Iowa.
Gov. Kay Orr appointed Mr. Saunders to the Nebraska Equal Opportunity Commission, where he served for three terms. He recently received his 50-year pin in the Franklin Masonic Lodge. He was active in Big Brothers, UNL Touchdown Club, Kiwanis Club, Sigma Phi Theta, Pi Kappa Delta, Trinity United Methodist Church, Presbyterian Church of the Cross, American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Trudy (Mrs. Bryan) Saunders Bredthauer of Omaha; and two grandsons.
Harold Salter
MEDFORD, ORE. -- Harold Salter, 83, of Medford, Oregon, died Monday, August 14, 2000 in Medford.
Mr. Salter was born in Greeley, and graduated from Greeley High School. He entered the Army in 1942 and flew transport plains to India as part of his duties.
He moved to Oregon following World War II and worked as a contractor.
Survivors include his wife, Georgia; two sons, Jack of Medford and Ray of Roseville, Calif.; one daughter, Barbara Garrett of Portland, Ore.; two sisters, Edna Thompson of Laramie, Wyo., and Dorothy Lyons of Grand Junction, Colo.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Ruby Alexander
Ruby H. Alexander, 88, of Grand Island died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Wedgewood Care Center in Grand Island.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Walter Guenther
91, Retired construction worker
Walter H. Guenther, 91, of Grand Island died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Beverly Healthcare at Lakeview.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home. The Rev. Patrick Grindol will officiate. Entombment will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Mausoleum.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with family greeting friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Guenther was born Aug. 5, 1910, at Pickrell to Adolph and Cora (Holroyd) Guenther. He was raised on a family farm and was educated near Pickrell.
He married
Laurine Conley on Oct. 10, 1936. They lived in Grand Island where he worked construction.
He was a member of the Eagles. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, wood working and his dogs.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Gail Ridgway of Omaha, Janice Holmen of Grand Island and Sherry Kluver of Fairfield; 11 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; a brother, Virgil Guenther of Conrow, Texas; and two sisters, Marilyn Goetter of Pensacola, Fla., and Phyllis Smith of Houston.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Howard and Raymond and two infant sisters.
