'Jean' Palu
68, Retired nurse
Caroljean "Jean" A. Palu, 68, of Grand Island died Monday, August 20, 2001, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. The Rev. Jim Hunt will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation with the family present will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday with a scripture rosary service at 7 p.m. at Curran Funeral Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Francis Hospice.
Mrs. Palu was born Oct. 11, 1932, at Hanover, Kan., to Henry R. and Karoline H. (Bollman) Hunt. She lived in various cities in Kansas and Missouri before moving to Grand Island in 1946. She graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School in 1950. She attended St. Francis School of Nursing, graduating with the class of 1953.
She married
Elvin E. Palu on June 26, 1954, at Grand Island. The couple lived in Grand Island. She was an obstetrics and pediatrics registered nurse at St. Francis Medical Center for 39 years, retiring in 1992.
After retiring, she enjoyed gardening, quilting, reading, puzzles, Nebraska football and being a grandmother.
Mr. Palu died in September 1977.
She was a former member of St. Mary's Cathedral and a member of St. Leo's Catholic Church.
Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Thomas A. Palu and Michael A. and Valerie Palu, all of Grand Island and David G. and Betty Palu of Doniphan; two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Gaylord Martens of Grand Island and Amy and Juan Pacheco-Bloch of Bogota, Colombia; six grandchildren; and one sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Ray Hunnicutt of Leavenworth, Kan.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles and H.R. Jr.; and one sister, Mary Davis.
Helen Stahlnecker
Helen Stahlnecker, 69, of Grand Island died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at her home.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grand Island with a family prayer service at 1:15 p.m. The Rev. Martin Schmidt will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday with the family greeting friends from 6 to 7 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Francis Hospice or Trinity Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Stahlnecker was born March 22, 1932, to Iler and Carrie (Nielsen) Hansen at Winside. She was educated in the Winside Public Schools graduating in 1949. She attended Grand Island Business College graduating in 1952 with a secretarial degree. She was employed at Bankers Life of Nebraska Insurance Company from 1952 until 1963. She worked at the Mason Hanger Ammunition Plant from 1966 to 1974. In 1974, she went to work for the City of Grand Island as secretary to the mayor and retired in 1997 as purchasing agent for the City of Grand Island.
She married
Franklin "Stony" Stahlnecker Sr. on Nov. 2, 1956, at Columbus. The couple lived in Grand Island all their married
life.
She was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. She enjoyed cooking for her family and taking care of her grandchildren. She enjoyed golf, embroidery and gardening.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Dave Theodore of Glendive, Mont., and Dawn and Jeff Splattstoesser of Grand Island; six grandchildren; one great-grandchild; a sister, Alice Olin of Crosby, N.D.; and two brothers, Bernard Hansen of Olathe, Kan., and Norris Hansen of Winside.
She was preceded in death by two brothers.
'Bus' Christensen
83, Farmer and rancher
MERNA -- Thomas "Bus" Christensen, 83, of Merna died Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow. The Rev. Bob Winn will officiate. Burial will be in the Cliff Table cemetery west of Merna.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the People City Mission in Lincoln, the Merna Rescue Unit or the Evangelical Free Church in Broken Bow.
Mr. Christensen was born July 23, 1918, to Thomas and Anna (Jensen) Christensen in the Cliff Table area of Custer County. He attended rural schools, graduated from Arnold High School in 1936 and served in the Army during World War II. He spent his whole life farming and ranching in the Cliff Table area.
He loved his livestock. He enjoyed restoring old tractors.
Survivors include his wife, Olive of Merna; two daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret and Rusty Warner of Lincoln and Marguerite and Craig Lind of Lincoln; and a sister, Eleanor Cornish of Wood River.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Carl.
Evelyn Hammond
HASTINGS -- Evelyn R. Hammond, 81, of Perkins Pavilion in Hastings died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Perkins Pavilion.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Peace Lutheran Church. The Rev. Donald E. Boeschen will officiate. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Gardens in Hastings.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday with family present from 7 to 9 p.m. at Butler-Volland Funeral Home and one hour prior to services Thursday at the church.
Mrs. Hammond was born Dec. 3, 1919, in Juniata to Edo and Anna (Koch) Borchers.
She married
Harley Hammond on Dec. 2, 1944, in Juniata. They moved from Thurston to Hastings in 1948. She provided day care, was an Avon representative, worked at Hastings High School, Sunnyside Home, was a housekeeper at Mary Lanning Hospital Dormitory and as a night receptionist for Butler-Volland Funeral Home. Her husband died May 15, 1959.
She was a member of Peace Lutheran Church, Lutheran Women's Missionary League and Fellowship League, all in Hastings.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Larry Hammond of Hastings, Ron and Teri Hammond of Blue Springs, Mo., and Ken and Marcia Hammond of Omaha; a daughter and son-in-law, Judy and Steve Power of Central City; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a brother, Elmer Borchers of Hansen.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by one grandson; three sisters, Martha, Elise and an infant Helena; and six brothers, Henry, William, Albert, Lorenz, Leonard and an infant Ernest.
Steven Jorgensen
NORTH LOUP -- Steven Jorgensen, 78, of North Loup died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the North Loup United Methodist Church. The Rev. Melanie Adams will officiate. Cremation will follow the funeral service. Inurnment will be at a later date at the Hillside cemetery at North Loup.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Ord Memorial Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to the North Loup United Methodist Church, the North Loup First Responders or to the family.
Louis Mach
79, Farmer
BURWELL -- Louis Mach, 79, of Burwell died Monday, Aug. 20, 2001, at his home southwest of Burwell.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Assembly of God Church in Burwell. The Rev. Mike Blatchley will officiate. Burial will be in the Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell.
There will be no visitation.
Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Field of Dreams at Burwell or Huskie Foundation at Arcadia.
Mr. Mach was born Nov. 24, 1921, in Custer County to John and Anna (Hulinsky) Mach. He attended country school in Custer County. He farmed all his life and retired in 1989.
Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Frank and Jeanette Mach of Callaway.
He was preceded in death by five brothers, Joe, John, Albert and two infants; and two sisters, Agnes and Bessie.
Helen Nilson
MARQUETTE -- Helen E. Nilson, 71, of Marquette, died Tuesday, Aug. 21, 2001, at Midwest Covenant Center in Stromsburg.
Services are pending for Friday.
