Doris Hudson
SUPERIOR -- Doris Hudson, 87, of Superior died Friday, Dec. 7, 2001 in Superior.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Megrue-Price Funeral Home Chapel in Superior. The Rev. Dorthea Fairbanks will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery in Superior.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mrs. Price was born Sept. 5, 1914 at Oak, Neb., to Henry Schultz and Pearl Seidle. She attended school at Sandy Nob, near Bostwick, and graduated from Superior High School in 1933.
She married
W. Edward Hudson on March 31, 1941, in Topeka, Kan. She lived in Bostwick and Superior most of her life.
She was a member of the Sunnyside Club, Rural Social Circle, Couples Pinochle Card Club and was a 4-H leader.
She enjoyed gardening and flowers and spent many hours baking pies and cooking at the Leslie Hotel.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Karen and Floyd Rothfuss of Omaha and Carol and Leslie Warneking of Superior; four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband and one brother, Gerald Schultz.
Helen Hesselgesser
Helen M. Hesselgesser, 88, of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at Boswell Hospital in Peoria, Ariz.
Services are pending with the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Robert Mahaffy
Robert D. Mahaffy, 23, of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, as a result of injuries received in an accident at Monfort Meatpacking Co. in Grand Island.
Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday from Kleine Funeral Home Chapel. The Rev. Lonnie Logan will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Mahaffy was born Feb. 11, 1976, in Hastings to Stanley and Mary (Jewett) Mahaffy. He grew up in Hutchinson, Kan., and attended school there. He graduated from Ogden, Utah, High School.
He entered the U.S. Navy, serving from Dec. 16, 1996, until Jan. 11, 1997. Later he worked in Hutchinson, Kan., and Grand Island area. He worked for Monfort Meatpacking Co. in Grand Island at the time of his death.
He enjoyed airplanes and ham radios.
Survivors include his mother, Mary Jess of Grand Island; one sister, Lori Ann (Mrs. Gary) Dalby of Sutherland, and his grandmother, Edith Mahaffy of Hutchinson.
He was preceded in death by his father; two grandfathers and one grandmother.
'Fritz' Miller
Raymond "Fritz" E. Miller, 78, of Grand Island died Tuesday, June 8, 1999, at the St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home. The Rev. Jim Keyser will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Thursday with the family receiving friends from 7 to 9 p.m. at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mr. Miller was born on April 23, 1921, to Raymond and Gladys (Wilkie) Miller in St. Paul. He grew up and attended school in St. Paul and Grand Island. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1940.
He married
Shirley A. Hann on Aug. 6, 1942, in Grand Island. They lived in Grand Island.
He entered the U.S. Army on Aug. 28, 1942, at Ft. Crook and served with Troop H, 12th Cavalry, in the southern Pacific. He received the Asiatic Pacific Service Medal, Bronze Star, Division 44 Distinguished Unit Citation, Philippine Liberation Ribbon and a Purple Heart for wounds received in action at Luzon on Feb. 15, 1945. He was discharged on Oct. 10, 1945.
After his discharge he returned to Grand Island, where he began working at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant. He retired after working there 33 years.
He was a member of several clubs including the VFW, the Platt-Duetsche, FOE Aeries No. 378, Elks and the Central Nebraska Pigeon Association. He held offices in the Elks and the Central Nebraska Pigeon Association.
Survivors include two sons, Ron and Mark, both of Grand Island; a daughter, Susan (Mrs. Robert) Peper of Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one step-brother, Roger Taylor, and a special friend, Dee Mierau.
He was preceded in death by his wife on Oct. 10, 1990; a sister, Betty.
Charles Hock
HASTINGS -- Charles Raymond Hock, 59, of Hastings, died Monday, June 7, 1999, at his home.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Salvation Army Church in Hastings. Envoy Nolan Crago will officiate. There will be private family interment. There will be no viewing or visitation.
Butler-Volland Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army.
Mr. Hock was born Sept. 25, 1939, in Hastings to Raymond B. and Petrea (Rasmussen) Hock. He served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War from Nov. 7, 1961 to Nov. 2, 1964.
He was a member of the Salvation Army, Salvation Army Men's Club, V.F.W. and All Vets Honor Guard.
Survivors include two sisters, Shirley (Mrs. Robert) Frese and Dee (Mrs. Gary) Doyan, both of Hastings; two brothers, John of Hastings and Larry of Hayes, Kan.
Bernice Layher
WOOD RIVER -- Bernice Florence Layher, 78, of Wood River died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River. The Rev. John McKinley will officiate. Burial will be at Wood River Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to First Presbyterian Church in Wood River, Western Hall County Good Samaritan Center or donor's choice.
Mrs. Layher was born Jan. 31, 1921, to Frank and Christina (Molt) Engel on the family farm southwest of Grand Island. She attended Hall County District No. 77 school.
She married
Lester H. Layher on Sept. 15, 1943, at Grand Island. The couple farmed near Wood River throughout their married
life.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Wood River. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, crocheting and traveling.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Kenneth and Harland, both of Grand Island; one daughter, Janet (Mrs. Lyle) Broeder of Hershey; three grandchildren and one sister, Ruby Schroeder of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by three brothers, Elmer, Earl and Lester Engel and one sister, Iola Bockman.
Leona Svoboda
ST. PAUL -- Leona E. Svoboda, 97, of St. Paul died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at Integrated Health Systems in Palmer.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in St. Paul. The Rev. James Murphy and Michael McDermott will officiate. St. Wenceslaus cemetery near St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Peters Funeral Home in St. Paul with a 7 p.m. vigil service and Catholic Daughters Rosary.
