Steven Boyd
HASTINGS -- Steven Gilruth Boyd, 31, of Hastings died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings after a lengthy battle with melanoma.
Wake/Rosary services will be at 7:30 p.m. Monday at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Fathers Michael Houlihan and David Bourek will officiate. Burial will be in the Parkview cemetery in Hastings.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home, one hour prior to Rosary Monday at the church and one hour prior to service time Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to the Steve Boyd Memorial Fund for Easton Boyd in care of City National Bank, 800 W. Third, Hastings, NE 68901.
Mr. Boyd was born Dec. 4, 1970, in Denver to Jerry and Blue (Darrington) Boyd. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1989. He graduated from Central Arizona Junior College and attended the University of Nebraska Lincoln.
He was a record holding pitcher for the University of Nebraska baseball team during the 1992 and 1993 seasons.
He married
Heidy DeWitt July 20, 1996, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Hastings. He worked at Nebraskaland Distributors in sales.
He was actively involved in softball, golf and was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Lochland and Southern Hills Country Clubs.
Survivors include his wife; a son, Easton of home; his parents of Hastings; a brother and sister-in-law, Michael and Dana Boyd of Hastings; and a sister and brother-in-law, Jean and Dr. John Fallick of Lincoln.
Helen Garris
AURORA -- Helen Garris, age 71, of Aurora died Sunday, February 24, 2002, at her home.
Funeral Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Chapel of Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. The Rev. Mary McQueen will officiate. Burial will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary.
Mrs. Garris was born Nov. 15, 1930, toHenry and Opal (Rawlings) Schneider in Nebraska City. She grew up in Nebraska City and attended school there.
She married
Robert Joseph Garris on September 6, 1948, at Lincoln. In 1953, they moved to Aurora, where Bob was plant manager for the Phillips Petroleum Company. Her husband died on July 4, 1993.
She was a member of the Nebraska City Alumni Foundation. She enjoyed gardening, interior decorating, reading and music. She also enjoyed shopping with her daughters and friends.
Survivors include four children, Pat Garris of Grand Island, JoLynn Brown and her husband David of Lincoln, Kristy Wittler and her husband Neal of Hoskins and Debbie Wright and her husband Wes of Lincoln; three grandchildren, Scott, Stacy and Susan Wittler of Hoskins; a step-granddaughter, Jenna Garrow of Lincoln; her mother, Opal Billingsley of Nebraska City; a sister, Susie Shull and her husband John of Riverton, Iowa; a half-sister, Nora Barrett of Lincoln; sister-in-laws, Verona Bolen of Bolivar, Mo., Juanita Miller and her husband George of New Market, Va., and Yvonne Berthold and her husband Walter of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her father, step-father, George Billingsley; her brother, Mark Schneider and half-sister, Paula Billingsley.
Robert Opp
WOOD RIVER -- Robert R. Opp, 70, of Wood River died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services are pending with Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Christine Schaffert
AURORA -- Christine "Tena" Schaffert, 84, of Aurora died Sunday morning, February 24, 2002, at Memorial Hospital.
Funeral Services will beat 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Hampton. The Rev. George E. Damm will officiate. Interment will be in the Aurora Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Monday at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora.
Survivors includefour sons and daughters-in-law, Richard and Stella of Aurora, Donald of Ashby, Ronald and Joyce of Park Ridge, Ill., and Robert and Ilka of SeteLagoaf, Brazil.

Clara Micek
OMAHA -- Clara T. Micek, 89, of Omaha died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Mercy Care Center in Omaha.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Peters Catholic Church in Clarks. The Rev. Don Cleary will officiate. Burial will be in the Calvary cemetery in Clarks.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday at the church with a vigil service at 7 p.m. and from 9 a.m. until service time on Wednesday. McKown Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Micek was born April 28, 1912, in Genoa to John S. and Josie (Klimek) Tomasiewicz. She attended Nance County School.
She married
Frank Micek at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church-Krakow in rural Genoa. The couple lived and farmed north of Clarks until his death on Aug. 15, 1961.
She moved to Omaha for a short time before returning to Clarks where she was a housekeeper for Father John Korus. In 1965, she moved back to Omaha where she has lived since.
She was a member of St. John Vianney Catholic Church. She enjoyed reading, sewing, cooking, gardening and her family.
Survivors include a daughters and son-in-law, Louise and Robert J. Wagner of Omaha; a sister, Agnes Kampovitz of Hastings; and two grandsons.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Gertrude Augustyn; and three brothers, Henry, John and Phillip Tomasiewicz.
Bradley Elkins
Bradley E. Elkins, 37, of Grand Island died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, in Grand Island.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at All Faiths Funeral Home with the Rev. Richard Karohl officiating.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established in his name.
Clarence Hanner
Clarence W. Hanner, 83, of Grand Island died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002, at the VA Nebraska-Western Iowa Health Care System in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. Julie Bringelson will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. until service Wednesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the St. Jude's Leukemia Foundation.
Mrs. Hanner was born March 13, 1918, at Seneca to Lewis E. and Kathryn (Miller) Hanner. He grew up and was educated in Seneca and Octavia, graduating from Octavia High School in 1936. He entered the U.S. Air Force on May 18, 1942, and served with the RRAF Command (Australian Command) during World War II. He was discharged Oct. 28, 1945. In 1950, he began working for Diamond Engineering.
He married
Eva Kuhn on May 27, 1955, in Valentine. The couple lived in Clarks and moved to Grand Island in 1960. He continued to work for Diamond Engineering as a foreman and retired in 1983 after 33 years of service. His wife died Feb. 26, 1995. He continued to live in Grand Island.
He was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Eagles, VFW and American Legion.
Survivors include a stepdaughter and stepson-in-law, Lois and Larry Mason of Central City; three stepsons and stepdaughters-in-law, Dan and Jackey Roumpf of Kearney, Monte and Betty Roumpf of Des Moines, Iowa, and Kent and Lana Roumpf, Nebraska City; two grandchildren; several step grandchildren and step great-grandchildren; and two sisters and brother-in-law, Vera Sercel of Lincoln and Glena and Alvin Hosenohr of Dewitt.
He was preceded in death by his wife, a daughter, Sharon Berger, and three brothers, Kenneth, Lloyd and Walter Hanner.
Jack Matthiesen
Jack W. Matthiesen, 74, of Grand Island died Sunday, Feb. 24, 2002.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home chapel. The Rev. William Forbes will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the donors choice.
Mr. Matthiesen was born June 6, 1927, at Grand Island to Harry and Alma (Siemers) Matthiesen. He grew up and was educated in Chapman and Grand Island. He enter the U.S. Navy on Sept. 15, 1943, serving during World War II in the Pacific Fleet. He served on the USS General W. F. Hase, USS Ingraham and USS Tucson. He was honorably discharged June 6, 1947.
He married
Illadaun M. Wagner in 1954 in Broken Bow. The couple lived in Grand Island. He worked as a Finishing Carpenter for Lacy's, Claussen's and Mid Plains Construction Co.'s. He also helped construct many sites for Bosselman's Inc.
He was a member of the Platt Duetsche. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
Survivors include a sister, Anita Brabander of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his wife.
