U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Madeline Luebs

Madeline R. Luebs, 89, a resident of Park Place Care Center, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Park Place.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Monday at St. Pauls Lutheran Church. The Rev. Joel Schroeder will officiate. Burial will be at 3 p.m. in the Cameron cemetery near Wood River.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.

Mrs. Luebs was born Nov. 23, 1912, in Cameron Township in rural Hall County to Emmet and Nora (Dean) Dubbs. She grew up on a farm near Shelton and attended District 13 School and Wood River High School.

She married Rudolph C. Luebs on Dec. 31, 1931, in the Lutheran Church at Cairo. They farmed near Cairo for five years, then moved to Grand Island. They later moved and farmed near Chapman for two years, then near Archer for four years. They returned to Grand Island in 1954.

Mrs. Luebs enjoyed animals. She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Wanda and Bob Ault of Grand Island; a granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; a brother, Elton Dubbs of Wood River; and three sisters, Colleen Snyder of Shelton, Cuba Snyder of Arnold and Bonnie Goodwin of Cairo.

She was preceded in death by her husband, a sister, Ruby Vogel, and an infant sister, Wanita.

Leroy Nunnenkamp

Leroy C. Nunnenkamp, 89, of Grand Island died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at St. Francis Skilled Care.

Services are pending with All Faiths Funeral Home in Grand Island.

Jean Quandt

Jean A. Quandt, 68, of rural Grand Island died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at her home following a lengthy illness.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Third City Christian Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Jerry Quandt will officiate. Burial will be at the Wiegert cemetery northeast of Grand Island.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.

Memorials are suggested to the Third City Christian Church or St. Francis Hospice.

Mrs. Quandt was born Jan. 13, 1934, at Archer to Henry and Helen (Wegner) Barnholdt.

She received her education in Archer; Cheyenne, Wyo.; Brigham City, Utah; Lincoln and Central City, before graduating from Palmer High School in 1952.

She married Ralph C. Quandt on Dec. 7, 1952, in Palmer.

Mrs. Quandt worked in the yard goods department at Five Points Skagway for six years. Because of her love of gardening, she worked for Roy Bauer and then for Barbara Quandt in their greenhouses. She retired in 1999.

She loved music, gardening, flowers, crocheting and canning garden produce. She enjoyed watching westerns and war movies on television.

Survivors include her husband, Ralph of Grand Island; a son and daughter-in-law, Jerry and Barb Quandt of Grand Island; two daughters and son-in-law, Laura and Don Hobbs of Grand Island and Kristine Marin of Glendale, Ariz.; a son-in-law, Greg Hupp of Grand Island; seven grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; one great grandson; seven step-great grandchildren; two sisters and brother-in-law, Donna and Bud Brewer of Yuma, Ariz., and Phyllis Wilcox of Huron, Ohio; and a half-brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Suzanne Green of Wichita, Kan.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Nancy J. Hupp.

Jocelyn Sipple

Jocelyn Sipple, 87, of Grand Island died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Tiffany Square Care Center of Grand Island.

Mrs. Sipple was cremated. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. There will be no visitation. Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Adult Day Care or the donor's choice.

Mrs. Sipple was born June 21, 1914, to Irving and Addie (Johnson) Harden at York. She grew up and began her education in York, then moved to Grand Island where she graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1932. After graduation, she worked as a sales lady in ladies fashion stores. She lived her adult life in Grand Island, as well as communities in Iowa and Missouri.

She married Charles Sipple on Jan. 8, 1938, at Lincoln. She then was a homemaker and mother.

She was a member of St. Pauls Lutheran Church.

Survivors include her husband, Charles, of Grand Island; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Linda Sipple, Columbus; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Boyd Harden, La Guna Hills, Calif.; and a half-sister, Frances Winstead, Albany, Ore.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Margaret.

Charlotte Colbert

CLARKS -- Charlotte Eliza Colbert, 94, of Clarks died on Friday, February 22, 2002, at the Central City Care Center.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Clarks cemetery with Rev. Ralph Supernaw officiating. There will be no visitation. Solt Funeral Home in Central City is in charge of arrangements. A memorial fund has been established in her memory.

Mrs. Colbert was born on Sept. 13, 1907, at the Pierce Chapel Community in Merrick County to Arthur F. and Jennie A. (Campaign) Pierce. She grew up in Clarks and graduated from Clarks High School in 1925.

With the death of her father, she stayed at home to care for her mother, help raise her brothers and sister, and work on the farm.

She married Earl Howard Colbert on June 2, 1939, in Greeley, Colo. They lived in Clarks where Mrs. Colbert devoted her time to raising her own family. Mr. Colbert died on February 21, 1963. Mrs. Colbert continued to live in Clarks until 1999, when she came to live at the Central City Care Center.

She was a member of the Congregational Church in Clarks and had been involved in their women's organization.

Survivors include two sons and a daughter-in-law, Earl H. and Mary Colbert of Omaha and Clifford Colbert of Lincoln; one daughter, Glenda C. Homan of Tennessee; eight grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband; five brothers, Leonard, Edwin, Donald, Raymond, and Fred Pierce; a sister, Goldie, and an infant sister.

Wilma Dainton

BROKEN BOW -- Wilma W. Dainton, 88, Broken Bow died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Heritage Hall in Broken Bow.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Chapel in Broken Bow with the Rev. Jim Stark officiating. Burial will be in the Custer Center Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow. A memorial has been established to the Cedars Richardson House in Broken Bow.

Mrs. Dainton was born Aug. 22, 1913, to Walter S. and Josephine (Porter) Bailey at Arnold in the Pleasant Hill Community. She attended grade school at Pleasant Hill School from kindergarten through the 10th grade, then graduated in 1932 from Arnold High School.

She married G. Paul Dainton on June 11, 1932. They farmed and ranched from 1932 to 1935 in the Sand Valley Community west of Anselmo. They then moved to the Eureka Valley Community, southwest of Anselmo, where they lived from 1937 through 1947. The moved in 1947 to the Custer Center Community, where they lived until they moved to Broken Bow in 1981.

Mrs. Dainton was a homemaker, a member of the First Christian Church in Broken Bow and was a member of the Custer Center Extension Club for many years.

Survivors include her husband, G. Paul Dainton; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Marilyn Catlett of Broken Bow, Sharon and Ed Tiff of Kirksville, Mo., and Sandra and Lloyd Burton of Ogden, Utah; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and four sisters.

She was preceded in death by a son, G. Paul Dainton Jr.; a brother and six sisters.

Anna Crisco

LOUP CITY -- Anna E. Crisco, 64, of Loup City died Thursday, Feb. 21, 2002, at her home in Loup City.

Graveside funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Odd Fellow cemetery in Ponca City, Okla. Memorials are suggested to the Crisco family.

Gerald Mattson

CENTRAL CITY -- Gerald Edward Mattson, 89, of Central City died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City with Mervin Oberg officiating. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Visitation is from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the Jehovah Witness.

Mr. Mattson was born July 8, 1912, in Merrick County to Edward and Anna C. (Nelson) Mattson. He grew up in Merrick County, attended District 3 School and graduated from Central City High School.

He married Eleanor Mae Bonness on June 8, 1941, at the Archer Zion Evangelical United Brethren Church. Mr. Mattson farmed the homestead he grew up on and lived his entire life on the family farm. He retired from farming in 1978. Mr. Mattson and his wife continued to live on the home place.

Mr. Mattson was baptized and grew up in the United Methodist Church in Chapman, was a member of the Zion United Methodist Church in Archer, and currently was affiliated with the Jehovah Witness.

He served on the District 3 School Board and was treasurer for many years. He also served on the Lone Tree Township Board, where he was treasurer for many years, and was still serving on this board.

Mr. Mattson enjoyed wood carving, trapping, traveling, fishing, and tending to his garden of fruits and vegetables. His greatest pleasure in working in his garden was to be able to share his produce with friends and family.

Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, LeaAnn and Bruce Alt of Waverly; Janet and Val Swanson of Lincoln, and Nancy and William Provaznik of Omaha; a brother, Robert W. Mattson of New York City; 11 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, Harry and Joseph Mattson.
