Fred Howard
BELGRADE -- Fred Howard, 77, of Belgrade died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Revs. Edward Gill and Valjean Warman will officiate. Burial will be in the Main cemetery at Belgrade.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.
Mr. Howard was born Sept. 15, 1924, at Verdigree to William A. and Maude E. (Vibbard) Howard. At an early age he moved to Paige with his family. He attended country schools. He served in the Navy during Pearl Harbor.
He married
Irene Gamel in O'Neill. He worked as a ranch hand. He then moved to Winner, S.D., and farmed. They later moved to Springview and continued to work for the same rancher. In 1972 they moved to Belgrade and worked for Richardson Feedlot until he retired in 1992. In 1997 he entered the Veterans Affairs Nursing Home in Grand Island, and the past two years he lived at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.
He enjoyed playing pool and sheephead.
Survivors include three sons, Rex of Bassett, Ray of Fullerton and Rod of Grand Island; two daughters and son-in-law, Lorraine and James Mahaffey of Mittie, La., and Frieda Smith of Belgrade; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Ella VanAvery of O'Neill.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Minnie Urkoski; six brothers and three sisters.
'Jim' Jacobi
CLARKS -- Russell "Jim" Jacobi, 75, of Clarks died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at the Christus Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Solt Funeral Home chapel in Central City with President Ronald Spencer of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints officiating. Burial will be in the Clarks Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Solt Funeral Home.
Dorothy Koger
BURWELL -- Dorothy Koger, 73, of Burwell died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Valley County Hospital in Ord.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Burwell with the Rev. Rolly Salts officiating. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery.
Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the ambulance supply fund.
Patricia Seeley
HALSEY -- Patricia L. Seeley, 75, of Halsey died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Heritage Hall in Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow with the Rev. Linda Martin officiating. Burial will be in the Merna Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the Halsey United Church of Christ.
Mrs. Seeley was born Oct. 12, 1926, to Floyd A. and A. Opal (Small) Johnson on the Johnson homestead near Merna. She received her education in the Merna Public School and graduated in 1944.
She married
Burdell Seeley of Halsey on Dec. 7, 1945, in Lincoln. They lived their entire married
life on a ranch west of Halsey. She was a longtime active member of the United Church of Christ at Halsey and a charter member of the Merna chapter of Eastern Star. She was also a 4-H leader for a number of years. She worked for the U.S. Forest Service office at Halsey for more than 20 years and retired in 1977.
She loved to entertain family and friends. She enjoyed cooking, baking, playing bridge and going on gambling trips.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Margaret A. and Harold Thompson of Alliance, Marilyn L. and Steve Anderson of Dunning, Patricia R. and Darrell Andersen of Alliance and Johna K. Eaton of Halsey; one son and daughter-in-law, and John B. and Karyn Seeley of Halsey; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; one sister, Norma Ellingson of Hastings; two brothers, Douglas Johnson of Long View, Wash., and Bud Johnson of Mesa, Ariz.
She was preceded in death by her husband; two brothers, Vernon and Erwin Johnson; and two sisters, Evelyn Hostich and Ruthanna Marten.
Thelma Zehr
HASTINGS -- Thelma G. Zehr, 96, of Hastings died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Mary Lanning Memorial Hospital in Hastings.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Hastings with the Revs. Jim Miller and Dean Joy officiating. An Eastern Star memorial service will be conducted by Acacia Chapter 39, Order of the Eastern Star, in Hastings. Burial will be at 1 p.m. MST Wednesday in Chappell cemetery in Chappell with the Rev. Dean Joy officiating.
Visitation is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings and one hour prior to the service Tuesday at the church.
Memorials are suggested to Grace United Methodist Church.
Mrs. Zehr was born March 19, 1905, near Juniata to Clarence and Goldie C. (Conger) Hunt. She graduated from Chappell High School.
She married
Nicholas C. Zehr in Greeley, Colo., on June 4, 1925. They lived in Chappell until 1936, when they moved to Fremont. She was a clerk in several stores in Fremont, including J.C. Penney Co. They moved in 1989 to Good Samaritan Village in Hastings. Mr. Zehr died on Feb. 28, 1996. She moved to Sunnyside Retirement Home in 1997 and lived there until becoming ill in November 2001. She then lived at Haven Home in Kenesaw and in Perkins Pavilion at Good Samaritan Village in Hastings.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church; a dual member of Order of the Eastern Star Acacia Chapter 39 and Arbor Vitae Chapter 92 in Fremont; past noble grand of Rebekahs in Chappell; and NARFE in Hastings.
Survivors include one daughter, Barbara E. Yost of Hastings; two grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Waunetta Hosch of Ackley, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her husband and two sisters, Marguerite Spindler and Dorothy Riley.
Lenna Hanna
Lenna Hanna, 76, of Grand Island, formerly of Purdum, died Sunday, Aug. 12, 2001, at Park Place Nursing Home.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at the United Church of Christ in Purdum. The Rev. Tim Pearson will officiate. Burial will be in the Purdum Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the United Church of Christ in Purdum.
Mrs. Hanna was born Feb. 1, 1925, at Halsey to Clyde and Bertha (Glause) Anderson. She grew up in Halsey and graduated from Halsey High School in 1942. Prior to graduation, she worked as a librarian at the Halsey Library. After graduation, she cooked for a hay crew in Ashby.
She married
Marion M. Hanna on Aug. 23, 1942, at Hyannis. They lived on the Hanna Ranch at Purdum all their married
life. Her husband died in 1984. Due to health problems, she moved to Grand Island in 1999. She lived at both Riverside Lodge and Park Place Nursing Home, helping with various activities in any way she could.
She was a leader of both 4-H and Girl Scouts for many years and taught many about sewing and cooking. She enjoyed crocheting. She was a member of Purdum United Church of Christ.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Marion R. "Bob" and Bev Hanna of Grand Island; three daughters and a son-in-law, Dona and Frank Hawk of Grand Island, Crissie Wobig of Glenrock, Wyo., and Dalene Hanna of Purdum; three grandchildren; three step grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; eight step great-grandchildren; a brother, Donald Anderson of Lodgepole; and four sisters, Esther Shaw of Broken Bow, Pauline Richmond of Denver, Mary Wright of Grand Island and Grace Longfellow of Alaska.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Bob, Dale, Kenneth, James Rudell and an infant; two sisters, Elizabeth and Elsie M.; and a son-in-law, Larry Wobig.
Alta Burt
ST. PAUL -- Alta E. Burt, 91, of St. Paul died Monday, Aug. 13, 2001, at Howard County Community Hospital in St. Paul.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at United Methodist Church in Wolbach. The Rev. Ken West will officiate. Burial will be in Hillside cemetery in Wolbach.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Church in Wolbach or the Howard County Community Hospital.
Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home of St. Paul is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Burt was born March 21, 1910, at Elkhead, Mo., to Rhoney and Susie (Purdum) Dunn. At a young age, she moved with her family to the Nebraska areas of Mullen and Omaha. In 1922, the family settled in Burwell where she attended school and graduated from Burwell High School in 1929. After the death of her father, the family moved to the Stocks farm northwest of Wolbach.
She married
Harry Burt on Sept. 29, 1942, at O'Connor. They adopted a daughter in 1953. The family lived on the Burt family farm west of Wolbach for 48 years. Upon retirement in 1992, the couple moved to St. Paul. Her husband died Sept. 29, 1994.
She was a member of United Methodist Church, United Methodist Women and the Ray Maples American Legion Auxiliary, all in Wolbach; and the Fun and Learn Club and the Mary Circle of St. Paul. She enjoyed sewing, cooking and flowers.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Irene and Gary Walker.
Other than her husband, she was preceded in death by a brother, Almus Dunn; and a sister, Ruth Brayton.
