Ted Pibel
86, World War II veteran
FLORENCE, Colo. -- Edwin D. "Ted" Pibel, 86, of Florence, Colo., formerly of St. Paul, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home in Florence.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Grace Baptist Church in St. Paul. Private burial will be in Bartlett Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to the Colorado State Veterans Nursing Home.
Mr. Pibel was born April 3, 1915, in Dayton, Mont., to Edwin D. and Jessie (Chambers) Pibel. He grew up in Bartlett, graduating from Wheeler County High School in 1932. Following two tours in the Civilian Conservation Corps and working in the fruit orchards around Yakima, Wash., he joined the U.S. Navy in 1941. He served as a submariner in the Pacific Fleet for the duration of World War II and was honorably discharged in 1945.
Following the war, he earned a degree in social work at University of Nebraska at Omaha. He taught school for several years, then worked as a case worker and quality-control inspector for the Departments of Social and Health Services of the States of Nebraska and Washington.
He married
Gloria Martin in 1950. The couple lived in Nebraska and Washington. After his retirement, they moved from Olympia, Wash., to St. Paul, where they lived from 1990 to 2000.
He was a member of Grace Baptist Church in St. Paul.
Survivors include his wife of Colorado Springs; two daughters, Trelani J. Pibel of Centralia, Wash., and Tara L. Pibel of Colorado Springs; a son E. Douglas Pibel Jr. of Snohomish, Wash; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Herb and Bill, and a sister, Ruth Pibel.
'Jack' Thiel
DES MOINES, Iowa -- John "Jack" Thiel, 68, of Des Moines, Iowa, died Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa.
Services were held Jan. 7 in Des Moines.
Memorials are suggested to Alcoholic Anonymous or American Heart Association.
Mr. Thiel was born Dec. 20, 1933, in Grand Island to Dwight and Fanny (Cross) Thiel. He attended school in Grand Island through the sixth grade. In 1951, he graduated from Alda High School, where he excelled in basketball, baseball and track.
After two years of service in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he attended Kearney State College and Hastings College. He began his financial career with Securities Acceptance Corporation in Hastings. He then went to work for the State of Nebraska as a bank examiner. He also worked for the Small Business Administration as a loan officer. After a stint as a private banker, he re-entered government services, retiring from the U.S. Postal System. During his retirement, he worked as a greenskeeper at Des Moines Country Club and on home remodeling projects.
Survivors include his former wife, Marge Bartuska Thiel and a son and daughter-in-law, John and Pam Thiel, all of Des Moines, Iowa; two daughters and son-in-law, Sue Thiel of Minneapolis, Minn., and Julie and Jim Collins of Chicago; two grandchildren; two brothers, Karl of Grand Island and Dee of Manteca, Calif.; and two sisters and brother-in-law, Vera Jarzynka of California and Patricia and Dale Stratman of Gothenburg; and a brother-in-law, Raymond Jusek of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by his brothers, Frank, Alfred and Robert and four sisters, Leona, Bonnie, Leithe and Winifred.
Mae Wilson
WINONA, Minn. -- Mae Lawson Wilson, 91, of Winona, Minn., formerly of North Platte, died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Sauer Memorial Hospital in Winona.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church in North Platte. The Rev. David Lux will officiate. Burial will be in Ft. McPherson National cemetery south of Maxwell.
Odean Colonial Chapel At C & Sycamore in North Platte is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Wilson was born Aug. 5, 1910, in Bickelton, Wash., to David L. and Stella (Marvel) Lawson.
Survivors include two daughters and a son-in-law, Karen and Curt Siemers of Omaha and Charlene Wilson Howard of Warwick, R.I.; a son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Sharon Wilson of Galesburg, Ill.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a sister, Grace McCormick of North Platte.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles E. Wilson, and two brothers, Leonard and Walter Lawson.
Marion Winchell
PARNELL, Mo. -- Marion W. Winchell, 78, of Parnell, Mo., formerly of the St. Paul area, died Monday, Jan. 7, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services are pending at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Samuel Houck
Samuel M. Houck, Jr., 79, of Grand Island died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at St. Francis Memorial Health Center in Grand Island after suffering a heart attack Jan. 10, 2002.
In honor of his request, a private family memorial ceremony is planned.
Memorials are suggested to the Salvation Army.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes is in charge of arrangements.
Mr. Houck was born Jan. 14, 1923, in Omaha to Samuel M. Sr. and Maude B. Houck. He grew up in Grand Island, attended school in the Grand Island public schools and graduated from Grand Island Senior High in 1941.
He married
Alice Mae Pheif on March 31, 1944, in Grand Island while on furlough from the U.S. Army.
He lived his life in Grand Island, except when serving in the U.S. Army in Europe during WW II. He fought in the Battle of the Bulge.
He was a member of many clubs and organizations, coached football as a volunteer at Central Catholic High School and sat on the board of directors of Delicious Foods.
He owned Houck Distributing Co. and retired from his business in 1972.
Survivors include his wife of Grand Island; a daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Steve Ellenburg of Boulder, Colo.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Pudge (Garland) Houck.
Sara Schnuelle
Sara J. Schnuelle, 72, of Grand Island died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Tiffany Square in Grand Island.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island with family receiving friends from 1 p.m. until service time. The Rev. Ray Schroeder will officiate. Burial of the cremains will be at the Kearney cemetery at a later date.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Children's Home or Tabitha Hospice.
Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Schnuelle was born July 13, 1929, in Kearney to Lawrence and Marvel (Gherman) Krebs. She attended school in Kearney and graduated from Kearney High School.
She married
Robert E. Schnuelle Nov. 2, 1952, in Kearney. The couple lived in Hastings and Grand Island.
She worked for the Buffalo County superintendent of schools, DeMars Distributing, KMMJ Radio and was a bookkeeper for Spelts-Bailey Advertising, Atch's Restaurant and Dreisbach's. She took classes at Central Community College for two years and enjoyed computers.
She was the primary caregiver for her husband.
She led a full and active life and was an avid golfer, bridge player and enjoyed fishing, camping, travel, gardening, reading, painting and did beautiful find handiwork, knitting, crocheting, embroidery and tatting.
She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and Naomi Rebekah Lodge 12 of Kearney.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter and son-in-law, Shari Schnuelle and Richard Sharkey of Grand Island and a son, Robert K. Schnuelle of Maui; two step-grandchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Carol Mae Petersen.
