Kenneth Holmes
CENTRAL CITY -- Kenneth Wendall Holmes, 93, of Central City, formerly of Chapman, died Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the chapel of Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Joy Savage will officiate. Burial will be in the Chapman Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until service time Wednesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Holmes was born on Dec. 31, 1908, in Grant to Anson K. and Eva (Laub) Holmes. His family owned the Grant Tribune.
He attended school in Grant; Aiken, Minn.; Taylor, Sumner and Kearney. In 1928, he graduated from the Kearney Teachers College Normal Training.
Immediately after graduation from high school, he went to St. Louis, where he enrolled in the Robertson School of Aviation to fulfill a long time dream of becoming a pilot. The next several years he spent the time barnstorming in Kansas, Nebraska, and Iowa and logging hours in all types of small airplanes and gaining expertise in his profession.
He was a member of a group called the "Famous Flyers." In 1939, he was given his instructors rating and was hired by the P-T Airservice of Hays, Kan., as an instructor for the Civilian Pilot Training Program.
He married
Emily "Jerrie" Arnhold Dec. 31, 1939, in Stockton, Kan.
He continued his flight instruction at Hays for several more years, then was appointed flight examiner for North Central and Northwest Kansas. At the end of WW II, he went to Cheyenne, Wyo. and worked as an expediter in the United Airlines Modification Center.
After completing his work in Cheyenne, he moved his family to a farm near Odessa where they farmed for seven years. In 1953, they moved to Kearney and helped care for his parents until their death.
In 1959, the family moved to their farm near Chapman, where his grandparents James and Margaret Holmes had homesteaded in 1876. While living in Chapman, the couple and their daughter operated the Fun Times Kiddie Rides.
The couple retired in the mid-80s and in 1997 moved into Central City. He went to live at the Central City Care Center in 1998.
He was a member of the First Methodist Church in Kearney and attended the Chapman United Methodist Church. He enjoyed reading and music. He played the clarinet in high school and for the Kearney municipal bands. He also played the saxophone and at the age of 60, learned to play the organ. He continued his love of music throughout his entire life.
Survivors include his wife, of Central City.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia "Pat" Killham; and a sister, Hazel Swanson.
Raymond Knerl
RAVENNA -- Raymond J. Knerl, 74, of Ravenna died Saturday, Jan. 6, 2002, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at United Methodist Church in Ravenna. The Rev. Karla Sheffy will officiate. Burial will be in Highland Park cemetery in Ravenna.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna.
Mr. Knerl was born Jan. 12, 1928, in Buffalo County to John and Rose (Urwiller) Knerl. He graduated from Ravenna High School and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1949.
He married
Neva Struebing on July 27, 1950, in Grand Island. He worked for Minneapolis Moline in Grand Island and later operated a Standard Oil station in Grand Island. The couple moved to a farm south of Ravenna in 1957.
He was a member of Zion United Methodist Church. He enjoyed woodworking.
Survivors include his wife; two sons, John Knerl of Ravenna and Randal Knerl of Houston, Texas; five grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lucille Okrina Ridenour of Ravenna.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Diana Prochaska.
Marie Krajewski
ASHTON -- Marie A. Krajewski, 81, of Ashton died Saturday, Jan. 26, 2002, at her daughter's home near Doniphan.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Ashton. The Rev. Larry Coulter will officiate. Burial will be in the parish cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the church with a 7 p.m. vigil service.
Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice or the family's choice.
Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Krajewski was born May 29, 1920, on a farm near Ashton to Stanley and Hedwig (Jakubowski) Wroblewski. She attended Sherman County rural schools and later attended St. Francis parochial school in Ashton. She was a 1937 graduate of Ashton High School. After graduation, she moved to Omaha where she was employed.
She married
Leo Krajewski on Jan. 30, 1940, in Omaha. The couple lived in Omaha and later moved to Lincoln, where she worked as a waitress. In 1946, they moved to Ashton. During World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War, she worked at the Cornhusker Army Ammunition Plant in Grand Island. In 1968, they moved to Grand Island where she was last employed at Woolco before returning to Ashton in 1980. Her husband died Nov. 25, 1986. She continued to live in Ashton.
She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and its Council of Catholic Woman. She enjoyed gardening, being outdoors, baking, canning, her neighbors and spending time with her grandchildren.
Survivors include four daughters and sons-in-law, Barbara and David Shelnitz of West Haven, Conn.; Glenda and Larry Baker and Ellen and Francis Kuta, all of Grand Island; and Jackie and Melvin Legg of Doniphan; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Carla Peters of Loup City.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband and a sister, Helen Neal.
Gladys Lamphear
ALDA -- Gladys F. Lamphear, 86, of Alda died Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Center of Wood River.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home chapel in Grand Island. The Rev. Rose Bartleson will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park cemetery in Grand Island.
Visitation will be from 3 to 9 p.m. Monday at Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home with the family receiving friends from 6 to 9 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to Alda united Methodist Church or the family.
Mrs. Lamphear was born April 14, 1915, in Merrick County to Henry and Laura (Beberniss) Vogt. She grew up and received her education in Merrick and Hamilton Counties.
She married
Floyd Lamphear on March 12, 1937, at Rawlings, Wyo. The couple lived in Rawlings until moving to Alda during World War II. She was employed as a clerk at the Alda Post Office for 21 years and retired in 1976.
She was a member of the Alda Methodist Church and the Platt-Duetsche.
Survivors include a daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Larry Hettler of Grand Island, a son, Leonard of Alda, two grandchildren, a great-grandchild and a brother, George Vogt of Grand Island.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and two sisters.
Gennavive Layne & Reyley Scott Roberts
Infant twins
AURORA -- Gennavive Layne and Reyley Scott Roberts, infant twin daughter and son of Scott and Holly (Kowell) Roberts of Aurora, died shortly after birth Friday, Jan. 25, 2002, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.
Graveside services were held Monday at Aurora Cemetery. The Rev. Seth L. Leypoldt officiated.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Higby-McQuiston Mortuary was in charge of arrangements.
Survivors include their parents, and grandparents, Rodney and Janet Roberts of Aurora, Bob Kowell of Colorado and Bonnie Berthelsen of Omaha.
Hazel Stucker
BROKEN BOW -- Hazel P. Stucker, 89, of Broken Bow died Sunday, Jan. 27, 2002, at Jennie Melham Hospital In Broken Bow.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Govier Brothers Mortuary chapel in Broken Bow. The Rev. Jerry Ruzicka will officiate. Burial will be in Ansley Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the mortuary.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mrs. Stucker was born Sept. 21, 1912, at Ansley to William and Sarah J. (George) Price. She was educated in Ansley.
She married
Wayne J. "Bob" Stucker on May 29, 1931, in Phillipsburg, Kan. They operated Stucker's Grocery in Ansley during the 1930s. They later moved to Broken Bow. Her husband died Dec. 8, 1966. The were married
for 65 years.
She was a member of First Baptist Church in Ansley. She enjoyed visiting, having coffee and playing cards. She also enjoyed Boston Terrier dogs.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Robert and Margaret Stucker of Kiowa, Colo., eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, Danny Stucker, a daughter, Patty Christensen, six brothers, Charles, Ray, Harold, Thomas, Ted and Bruce, three sisters, Bessie Coffman, Annie Hawk and infant sister, Minnie.
