Betty Giese
Betty K. Giese, 86, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2002, at Tiffany Square Care Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Gollaher Chapel of Trinity United Methodist Church in Grand Island. The Revs. Delvin Roper and Vernon Rice will officiate. Burial will be in the Elmwood cemetery at St. Paul.
Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to Grand Island Woman's Club or the church.
Mrs. Giese was born Sept. 11, 1915, at Elba to Christian and Petrea (Andersen) Koborg. She grew up in Elba and graduated from Elba High School. Following graduation, she attended nursing school in Lincoln.
She married
Glenn H. Gibson in 1936 at Elba.
She married
Frederick Giese on Dec. 19, 1959, in Grand Island. The couple owned and operated Ideal Cleaners.
She was a member of Trinity United Methodist Church, Past Worthy Matron of Eastern Star, past president of the Grand Island Woman's Club, past president of the Liederkranz Ladies and a member of the DOES. She enjoyed acting in school plays and playing bridge.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Glenn and Pat Gibson of Loveland, Colo.; two daughters and a son-in-law, E. Jane and Dick Dubas of Grand Island and Margaret Ann "Peggy" Gibson of Ravenna; a sister, Deta Adams of Scottsbluff; nine grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by both husbands; a brother, Carl Koborg; two sisters, Anna Koborg and Edith Arnold; and a grandchild.
Dale Wetzel
Dale E. Wetzel, 69, of Grand Island died Thursday Jan. 31, 2002, at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home Chapel in Grand Island. The Rev. George Wheat will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Island City Cemetery.
There will be no visitation.
Memorials are suggested to the family.
Mr. Wetzel was born on July 23, 1932, to William and Ruth (Paist) Wetzel at Grand Island. He grew up and attended school in Grand Island. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High School.
He married
Rosella Peters on Oct. 8, 1952, in Worms. He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 18, 1952, and served in the Korean War in Germany near the Iron Curtain. He was discharged on Nov. 1, 1954.
After his discharge, the couple lived in Grand Island where he was an auto mechanic and later owned and operated Dale's Lawn Care.
He married
Myrna Gillham on Feb. 26, 1971, in Grand Island. She died in 1980. He retired in 1998.
He was a member of the United Veterans Club and the VFW.
Survivors include five daughters and sons-in-law, Sarilee Wetzel of Cairo, Sally and Jim Jackson, and Deirdre "Dee" and Gordon Desel, all of Wood River, Theresa and Frank Kucera of Grand Island and Nancy and Richard Acker of Blair; one son, Timothy Wetzel of Grand Island; 13 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Bud Wetzel of Independence, Ore.; one half brother, Lloyd Beliel of Kearney; one sister, Myrtle Peterson of Murphy's, Calif.; and one half sister, Wilma Kenyon of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by one sister, Donna Schoel, and one half sister, Opal Lorang.
Linda Spellman
SHELTON -- Linda M. Spellman, 60, of Shelton, formerly of Kearney, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Shelton. The Revs. Paul Collins and Thomas Mullowney will officiate. Burial will be in the Shelton Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at the church with a funeral vigil and rosary at 7 p.m.
Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society and to the Sacred Heart's building fund.

Roderick Schimmer
NORTH PLATTE -- Roderick Martin Schimmer, 78, of North Platte died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Sutherland Care Center.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Patrick's Catholic Church. The Rev. R.L. Piontkowski will officiate. The body will be cremated after the service. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Grand Island Cemetery.
Visitation will be from noon to 6 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday with a Christian wake service at 7 p.m. Sunday at Adams & Swanson Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to the St. Patrick's Catholic Church or to the St. Jude Cancer Center for Children.
Mr. Schimmer was born Jan. 23, 1924, to Walter and Emelia Schultz Schimmer at Grand Island. He was raised and attended school in Grand Island, graduating from Grand Island High School.
He married
Marian Patterson on Aug. 6, 1991, in Las Vegas. He ranched most of his life, although he also worked part time for CarQuest for 10 years.
He was an avid musician and played the drums with many bands. He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church and the Elks Club in Ord.
Survivors include his wife; three daughters and sons-in-law, Julie and Guy Stethem of Rose, Martha and Ken Kollasch of Ord and Peggy and Bill Schmitz of North Platte; one son and daughter-in-law, Roderick W. and Teresa Schimmer of North Platte; one stepdaughter, Pam Benjamin of Kansas City, Mo.; one stepson and his wife, Ed and Jill Woods of McCook; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four step grandsons; one step great-granddaughter; and one sister and brother-in-law, Jean Ann and Bob Clark of Streamwood, Ill.
He was preceded in death by an infant son.
MaryAnne Prunty
OMAHA -- MaryAnne Prunty, 70, of Omaha, formerly of Grand Island, died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at the Methodist Hospital in Omaha.
Services are pending with Apfel-Butler-Geddes Funeral Home.
Thomas Pickett
MIDDLEBURG HEIGHTS, Ohio -- Thomas E. Pickett, 56, of Middleburg Heights, Ohio, died Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at Parma, Ohio.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Tomon and Sons Funeral Home in Middleburg Heights. Burial will be in the Eastlawn cemetery in Brunswick, Ohio.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
Mr. Pickett was born Oct. 10, 1945, to Arlene M. and Glenn Pickett at Beaver City. He was a U.S. Army Vietnam War veteran and was a truck driver.
Survivors include his mother; four daughters, Michelle Corrigan, Shawna Pickett, Tammi Gusler of Lincoln and Tarra Pickett; three stepchildren, Patty Lederer, Terri Jewell and Jamie Taylor; 11 grandchildren; two sisters, Ann Gregg and Mary Sue Grossman and one brother, Robert Pickett.
He was preceded in death by his father.
'Bart' Bartlett
Arthur D. "Bart" Bartlett, 73, of Grand Island died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002 at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church with the Revs. Martin P. Schmidt and Ronald Benson officiating. Burial will be at the Grand Island City Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday with the family present from 6 to 8 p.m. at Kleine Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to Missouri Synod Lutheran Foundation, the Bethphage Foundation, the Grand Island Firefighters Foundation or the Altrusa International Foundation.
Mr. Bartlett was born May 24, 1928 to Dr. Grover and Mabel (Rave) Bartlett at Primrose. In 1945, he graduated from Belgrade High School and then attended Christian College in Central City. He then went to Midland Lutheran College in Fremont. After serving in the Marine Corps, he returned to Grand Island and served as a fireman for 22 years.
He married
Verna Kuhn in 1949. She died in 1968.
On August 10, 1968, he married
Alice Beck in Omaha. In 1984 they moved to Mira Valley where they lived for 16 years before moving back to Grand Island. During his life he was co-owner/operator of Whiteway Tree Service in Grand Island, owner/operator of Dip-N-Strip (a furniture stripping and renovation service) and also served as a deputy fire marshall for the State of Nebraska.
Mr. Bartlett was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church and the Platt Deutsche Society. He enjoyed fishing and camping.
Survivors include his wife, Alice; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tim and Cathy, and Daryl and Doris, all of Grand Island; one stepson, Gerald Beck of Grand Island; two stepdaughters, Marilyn Sok of Grand Island and Marcia Beck of Des Moines, Iowa; nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother and sister-in-law, Grover "Duke" and Joyce of Grand Island.
He was preceded in death by a half-brother, Harold Beck; a grandson; and his first wife, Verna.
