Merle Hollinger
Merle L. Hollinger, 81, of Grand Island died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at Nebraska Veterans Home.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Nebraska Veterans Home chapel. The Rev. Bill Forbes will officiate. Burial will be in Burkett cemetery on the Veterans Home grounds with military rites conducted by the honor guard of Fort Riley Kansas.
Visitation will be from 1 p.m. until service time Monday.
Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Hollinger was born Dec. 13, 1920, at Council Bluffs, Iowa, to Charles and Lillian (McGee) Hollinger. He grew up in Council Bluffs and attended Thomas Jefferson High School. He entered the U.S. Army on Nov. 17, 1942, and was discharged July 26, 1945.
He married
Geneva Wax on Oct. 4, 1945, at Yuma, Ariz. The couple lived in California where he was employed as a truck driver. He retired in 1987 and they moved to Eagle. He had been a resident of Nebraska Veterans Home since 1997.
She was a member of American Legion of Eagle.
Survivors include his wife of Eagle; a son and daughter-in-law, John and Judy Hollinger of Long Beach, Calif.; two daughters and a son-in-law, Kim and Chris Franklin of Downey, Calif., and Jo Valone of Vallejo, Calif.; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Fred Hollinger of Alvo and Robert Hollinger of Anderson, Ind.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, a brother and four sisters.
Florence Davenport
BURWELL -- Florence M. Davenport, 100, of Burwell died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at the Community Memorial Health Center in Burwell.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Assembly of God Church in Burwell. Burial will be in Cottonwood Cemetery. The Rev. Mike Blatchley will officiate.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hitchcock Funeral Home in Burwell.
Memorials are suggested to the church.
Mrs. Davenport was born Feb. 8, 1901, in Garfield County to Otto and Mary (Mauer) Tetschner.
She married
Charley Davenport on May 3, 1920, in Ord. The couple farmed in Valley, Garfield and Custer counties. They moved back to Garfield County from Comstock when they purchased the Henry Bales farm at the foot of Jones Canyon.
In 1984, her husband had a stroke which left him paralyzed on his right side. She cared for him in their home until his death in 1986. She remained on the farm until 1988 when she moved into a home in Burwell. In August 2000 she moved to the Burwell nursing home.
She was baptized at an early age and was a member of Assembly of God Church. She taught Sunday School class for many years.
Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Clarence and Vernell of Burwell; three grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Mable Nelson of Burwell; and two sisters-in-law, Lola Tetschner and Joanne Tetschner, both of Burwell.
She was preceded in death by her husband, two brothers and a sister-in-law, Ernest and Lloyd and Lucina Tetschner and a sister and brother-in-law, Carrie and Otis Conner.
Marie Klawonn
AURORA -- Jennie Marie Klawonn, 88, of Aurora died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at Hamilton Manor in Aurora.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Zion Lutheran Church northeast of Hampton. The Rev. Loren Cooper will officiate. Burial will be in Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church or Hospice.
Mrs. Klawonn was born March 22, 1913, on a farm northwest of Aurora to Emil and Alma (Sundberg) Gustafson. She grew up on the family farm near Aurora and graduated from Marquette High School.
She married
Arthur P. Klawonn on April 18, 1937. The couple lived in Bayard, Hampton, Marquette and Aurora. She taught school for three years in the Marquette area. She also cooked at the Marquette Café for two years and then cooked at the Marquette School for 16 years.
She was a member of the Zion Lutheran Church of Hampton and L.W.M.L.
Survivors include her husband; a daughter and son-in-law, Alma and Dale Rohde; a daughter-in-law, Lova Klawonn; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and a half-sister, Alma Wall.
She was preceded in death by a son, Bernard Klawonn; a grandchild; her twin sister, Mildred Goertzen; a sister, Helen Johnson; a brother, Walter Gustafson; a half brother, Reuben Gustafson; and a step-brother, Bill Bister.
Harold Klein
WOOD RIVER -- Harold E. Klein, 87, of Wood River died Friday, Jan. 18, 2002, at his son's home north of Wood River.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Grace Lutheran Church in Wood River. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant cemetery south of Cairo.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River.
Memorials are suggested to the church, Good Samaritan Center or the donor's choice.
Mr. Klein was born March 15, 1914, at the home of his parents north of Shelton to Fred C. and Millie (Vavrina) Klein. He attended District 61 School. He farmed with his brother and father.
He married
Marie E. Eickhoff on April 11, 1937, at the Zion Lutheran North Shelton Church. The couple farmed northwest of Wood River where he served on the District 33 School Board.
He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and participated in the building of the current facility. He was active in the family farming business. The couple enjoyed traveling, playing cards and spending time with their grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 64 years; two sons and daughters-in-law, Lawrence E. and Angeline of Wood River and Ivan H. and LeAnn of Gibbon; a daughter and son-in-law, Doris Y. and J. David Arterburn of Pleasanton, Calif.; eight grandchildren; two step grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a step great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Ruby, and a brother, Lester.
Lucille Larson
KEARNEY -- Lucille M. Larson, 87, of Kearney died Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002, at St. John's Center in Kearney.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Kearney. The Rev. Matthew T. Robinson will officiate. Burial will be in an Osage, Iowa, cemetery at a later date.
There is no visitation.

Mrs. Larson was born May 2, 1914, at Anoka, Minn., to Joseph and Lucy (Jansen) Larson. She graduated from Osage High School in 1930. She moved to Los Angeles in 1933 and started work at Bell Telephone Company. She moved to Kearney in 1989 to join her sister shortly after her retirement from Pacific Telesis Telephone Company in Los Angeles.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kearney where she was active in church circle and coffee clubs and Kearney Newcomers Club. She also was a member of Pioneer Telephone Association and served on its board for many years. She enjoyed extensive travel abroad and fine dining during her years in Los Angeles. She was a Dodger baseball fan and also enjoyed card playing and belonged to many bridge clubs.
Survivors include two nephews, Karl Melson of Aurora and Kirk Melson of Kearney and niece Christa Otake of Honolulu.
She was preceded in death by two sisters, Harriet Larson and Marion Melson.
Esther Rasmussen
ST. PAUL -- Esther M. Rasmussen, 73, of rural St. Paul died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, at her home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First Presbyterian Church in St. Paul. The Rev. James Hawley of North Platte will officiate. Burial will be in South Logan cemetery north of St. Paul.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to the church or St. Paul EMT Unit.
Mrs. Rasmussen was born Aug. 24, 1928, in the Gage Valley area near St. Paul to Robert and Esther Birt. Due to her mother's death, she was raised by Jesse and Etha Wimp of Palmer. She attended Palmer schools and graduated from Palmer High School in 1947. She then worked at Palmer Telephone Company.
She married
Glenn Rasmussen on Oct. 7, 1949, in Grand Island. The couple first farmed north of St. Paul. In 1952, they moved to a farm in the South Logan area north of St. Paul.
She was a member of First Presbyterian Church of St. Paul, Danish Brotherhood Lodge 211 of Grand Island, Carl Mogensen American Legion Post 119 Auxiliary of St. Paul, Rolling Eagles, Andrew Chapter 41 Eastern Star of Grand Island and Royal Neighbors of America. She was a member of the former East-West Club and had served as leader and was active in 4-H. She enjoyed being with her grandchildren, embroidering, cooking, baking, camping and watching John Wayne movies.
Survivors include her husband; three sons and daughters-in-law, Dale and Deb, Gerald and Cindy, and Richard, all of St. Paul; three daughters, Joan Rasmussen of Windsor, Mo., and Janet Rasmussen and Kim Fisher, both of North Platte; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her foster parents, a brother, LeRoy and an infant sister.
