Melvin Romohr
GRESHAM -- Melvin Wayne Romohr, 81, of Gresham died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at the Hearthstone in York.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Gresham Presbyterian Church. The Rev. Noel DeKalb will officiate. Burial will be at Cedar Lawn cemetery in Gresham.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg.
Memorials are suggested to the Cardiac Rehab unit of the York General Hospital.
Mr. Romohr was born March 29, 1920, in a farm home near Gresham to Mark A. and Stella Romohr. He started farming as a teen-ager during the Depression while his father worked for the Federal Agricultural Service, AAA, in York. He graduated from Gresham High School in 1937 and enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corps in December 1941. He completed pilot-training in 1942 and spent the majority of his service in World War II flying supply and troop transports in North Africa and Italy retiring as a captain in 1946. He returned to farming after the war.
He married
Maxine Sapp of North Platte in 1951. He farmed until 1982, retiring to a home in Gresham.
He was an avid reader and golfer, and until recently went fishing in Canada at least once every summer. He also enjoyed pheasant hunting. He and his wife spent much of their retirement preparing, planting and caring for wildlife habitat acreages on their farms.
He joined the Davidson/Neujahr Post No. 13 of the American Legion in Gresham after World War II and served as its commander. He served terms on the local school and co-op board and the Gresham Housing Authority. He also was an elder of the Presbyterian Church, a 50-year member of the Stromsburg Masonic Lodge No. 126 and a past member of the Sesostris Shrine in Lincoln.
Survivors include his wife; a brother and sister-in-law, Mark and Jennie Romohr of Gresham; one sister, Esther Schultz of Lincoln; four sons and daughters-in-law, Monte and Carolyn Romohr, Arnold Romohr and Matthew Romohr, all of Gresham, and Kim and Beth Romohr of Randolph; one daughter and son-in-law, Melanie and Joel Honegger of Lake Zurich, Ill.; and nine grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Gladys Paulick, and one son, Scott.
Raymond Trueman
MESA, Ariz. -- Raymond A. Trueman, 95, of Mesa, Ariz., died Sunday, Jan. 6, 2002.
Graveside services will be at West Lawn Memorial cemetery in Grand Island at a later date. His body was cremated.
Botimer Funeral Home Inc. in Phoenix is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials are suggested to the Hospice of the Valley in Mesa or Broomfield United Methodist Church in Broomfield, Colo.
Mr. Trueman was born July 8, 1906, at Sumner to William and Fern Trueman. He grew up and worked on the family farm. He graduated from high school and went to Kearney State Teachers College. After a few years of teaching and farming, he went into sales work and completed his career in insurance sales with Lincoln Life and Casualty.
He married
Elaine Chaney on May 16, 1941. The couple lived in Grand Island.
He enjoyed pheasant, deer and elk hunting, golfing, fishing, playing pool and traveling. He and his wife spent 40 years in Arizona during the winter months. The couple lived in Broomfield, Colo.
Survivors include his wife; a daughter, LaDonna Scheel of Broomfield, Colo.; two sons, Vaughn of Evansdale, Iowa, and Arden of Grand Island; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Christopher Watts
CODY, Wyo. -- Christopher D. Watts, 26, of Cody, Wyo., formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2002, as the result of an automobile accident near Cody.
Services are pending with Levander Funeral Home in Albion and Cedar Rapids.
'Sarah' Bresci
Cucenta "Sarah" Bresci, 71, of Grand Island died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at Park Place Health Care and Rehab Center.
Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Parkview cemetery in Hastings. The Rev. Scott Jones will officiate.
Visitation will be from 8 to 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Hospice.
Miss Bresci was born on Oct. 13, 1928, in Hastings to Filatelfo and Lucia (Aliano) Bresci. The family lived in Hastings until she was 13 years old and then moved to Beatrice, where she lived until she was 25 years old. She moved back to Hastings, then to Kearney, Doniphan and Grand Island.
She had lived at Park Place since December 1995.
Miss Bresci did small piece work for Mid Nebraska Individual Services. She enjoyed the outdoors and communicating through signing. Other special interests included stringing beads, putting puzzles together, playing bingo, doing crafts and listening to her Walkman radio and feeling the vibrations from the music in the headset.
Survivors include two brothers, Fred Bresci of Nevada and Yanno Bresci of Colorado Springs, Colo.
She was preceded in death by one sister, Ann Gilchrist.
Virginia Jensen
Virginia K. Jensen, 79, of Grand Island died Monday, Nov. 22, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home. Elder Terry Dewey will officiate. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4:30 to 9 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 4:30 to 6 p.m., Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.
Mrs. Jensen was born on March 16, 1920, in rural Gothenburg to Seth S. and Edith P. (Dorn) Helberg. She was educated in Gothenburg.
She married
Arthur Jensen on Sept. 1, 1939, at North Platte. She worked as a clerk for Safeway Stores in Gothenburg. She later worked as a bus driver for the Shelton public schools.
She enjoyed bowling, photography and gardening.
She was a member of the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Grand Island.
Survivors include her husband; two sons, Laverne Jensen of Grand Island and Dwayne Jensen of Denver; five daughters, Eunice Vayas of Austin, Texas, Rosemary Moore of Belen, N.M., Carol Gronewold of Gothenburg, Jolyn Harris of Fort Mill, S.C., and Kathy Pottor of Germantown, Wis.; 22 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Frank Helberg of Lincoln, Neil Helberg of Tucson, Ariz., and Seth Helberg of Riverside, Calif.; and three sisters, Mae Betty Osborn and Effie Johnson, both of Edgar, and Signe Helberg of LaJunta, Colo.
She was preceded in death by one grandson; one brother, Larry Helberg; and one sister, June Daharsh.
'Nancy' Keener
STROMSBURG -- Shirley "Nancy" Keener, 66, of Stromsburg, formerly of York, died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Palmer Funeral Home in Stromsburg. The Rev. Thomas McGuire will officiate. Burial will be at a later date.
There will be no visitation.
Mrs. Keener was born on March 17, 1933, in Philadelphia. She attended school in the Philadelphia area before moving to Nebraska, where she attended York College and the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
She lived in various places. She lived in York for the past three years at the leisure home before moving to Midwest Covenant Home in Stromsburg.
While living in York, she was a member of the Eagles Club and enjoyed crocheting.
Survivors include one son, Michael Drennen of Osceola; three daughters, Kathy (Mrs. Tim) Roberts of San Antonio, Kolleen Dilbeck of Fort Bragg, Calif., and Carla Mahlock of Lincoln; and nine grandchildren.
Leona Miller
FARWELL -- Leona Miller, 86, of Farwell died Wednesday, Nov. 24, 1999, at the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.
Services are pending at Jacobsen Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Elsie Pokorney
ORD -- Elsie Mabel Pokorney, 88, of Ord died Tuesday, Nov. 23, 1999, at the Valley County Nursing Home in Ord.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Ord Memorial Chapel. The Rev. James Splane will officiate. Burial will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday in the Wilber Czech cemetery in Wilber.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mrs. Pokorney was born on June 25, 1911, at Wilber to Adolph and Emma (Skopec) Hynek. She grew up in Wilber, where she attended school and was a graduate of Wilber High School. After receiving her education, she continued to work on her family's farm.
She married
Joseph Pokorney on July 12, 1955, at Ord. The couple lived on a farm west of Ord. She lived on the farm until recently moving into the Valley County Nursing Home.
She enjoyed quilting, baking bread and gardening.
Survivors include her husband.
She was preceded in death by a twin sister, Evelyn Pokorney; and two brothers, Frank and Adolph Hynek Jr.
