'Bill' Glendy
81, Rancher
OCONTO -- William L. "Bill" Glendy, 81, of Oconto died Friday, April 5, 2002, at his home.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church in Callaway with the Rev. Dale Coates officiating. Burial will be in the Oconto cemetery with military honors.
Visitation will be from 1 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Govier Brothers Mortuary in Broken Bow.
Memorials are suggested to the donor's choice.
Mr. Glendy was born Feb. 6, 1921, to Leonard O. and Mabel (Stockham) Glendy in the Finlen house on the South Loup River on the ranch where he grew up and lived his entire life. He attended Tuckerville School until he finished the eighth grade, then worked with his father on the family ranch. He broke horses for his father and played junior, Legion and men's league baseball for the Oconto ball team.
He married
Elsie Pflaster at the courthouse in Broken Bow on Dec. 27, 1941. He began serving during World War II on Sept. 16, 1942. He served in the 477 truck division. He helped build the Alcan Highway and drove a truck most of the time to transport supplies. He completed his tour of duty on Oct. 23, 1945, and returned home to the ranch.
Mr. Glendy was a leader of Tuckerville Future Feeders for many years. The family's summer vacation was the week at the county fair. He served on the Oconto School Board for several years and helped establish the Oconto Rural Fire District. He was a member of American Legion Post 250 in Oconto.
He received his honorary high school diploma as a World War II veteran from Callaway High School in 1999.
He spent his lifetime raising cattle. In 1993, the Glendy ranch was honored as the outstanding commercial cattlemen of the year in Nebraska.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie, of Oconto; one son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Donna Glendy of Broken Bow; three grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister, Carol Wackerla of Oconto.
He was preceded in death by one son, Jerry, in August 1978, and his brother Eldon in March 1993.
John Hack
GENOA -- John Hack, 80, of Genoa died Friday, April 5, 2002, at Genoa Community Hospital.
Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Augustana Lutheran Church in Genoa with the Rev. Kelley Pedersen officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Patrick Funeral Chapel.
Memorials are suggested to Augustana Lutheran Church in Genoa.
Mr. Hack was born Sept. 12, 1921, at Cheyenne, Wyo., to Bernard and Clara (Packard) Hack. He was educated in Cheyenne and South Sioux City, Neb. He served with the U.S. Army 334th Infantry Regiment from July 1942 to February 1946. His overseas assignments included the Ardennes, the Rhineland and Central Europe. He lived in numerous areas of the country and moved to Genoa in September 1949.
He married
Darlene Juhl on Jan. 11, 1950, in Genoa. He was employed in several area businesses and retired as head custodian of Genoa High School in June 1986.
He enjoyed gardening, woodworking and being with family.
He was a member of the American Legion and Nebraska Custodians Association.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene, of Genoa; one son and daughter-in-law, Monte and Sheri Hack of Grand Island; four grandchildren; one brother, Arden Hack of Central City; one sister, Fern Meyer of Grand Island; six half brothers, Raymond, Bob, Jack, Doug, Cecil and Goldie; and five half sisters, Bernadine, Trula, Sadie, Jean and Helen.
Dora Hilmer
BOELUS -- Dora B. Hilmer, 99, of Boelus died Saturday, April 6, 2002, at Beverly Health Care at Lakeview in Grand Island.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Methodist Church in Boelus with the Rev. David Masten officiating. Burial will be in Ebenezer cemetery near Boelus.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Jacobsen-Greenway Funeral Home in St. Paul.
Memorials are suggested to Grace United Methodist Church of Boelus or St. Francis Hospice.
Mrs. Hilmer was born on Dec. 22, 1902, on the family farm near Boelus to Ernest and Bertha (Paulman) Seery. She received her education at District 25 rural school in the Boelus area and grew up on the family farm.
She married
Edward W. Hilmer Sr. at Boelus on July 15, 1923. They farmed north of Boelus until 1972, when they retired. They moved to Boelus. He died in May 1979. She continued to live in Boelus until 1997, when she moved to Hulett Park Apartments in Cairo. She entered Beverly Health Care at Lakeview in Grand Island on Dec. 15, 1999.
She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church of Boelus, the Friendship Club and a Howard County extension club. She had been a choir member and a Sunday school teacher in the former Ebenezer Methodist Church north of Boelus.
She enjoyed gardening, raising flowers, sewing, embroidering and reading.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Ronald Obermeier of Cairo; three sons, Edward Jr. of St. Paul, Walter of Boelus and Arnold of Green Forest, Ark.; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant daughter; and three brothers, George, William and Elmer Seery.
Lola Hughes
RAVENNA -- Lola E. Hughes, 82, of Ravenna died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at St. John's Good Samaritan Center in Kearney.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ravenna with the Rev. Steven Schlund officiating.
Rasmussen Mortuary in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.
Mrs. Hughes was born July 25, 1919, on a farm near Poole to Herman and Ella (Hadenfeldt) Rohde. She was baptized and confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church south of Ravenna. She attended rural School District 117 and graduated from Ravenna High School in 1936.
She married
Harry E. Duffy on Feb. 4, 1940, in Los Angeles, Calif. They lived in Connecticut for many years.
She later married
Birney Hughes of Ravenna. They lived in Ravenna.
Survivors include two daughters, Lorna Frehm of Del Ray Beach, Fla., and Rhoda Kilgore of Ravenna; one son, Robert Duffy of Sonoma, Calif.; three granddaughters; one grandson; and one brother, Robert Rohde of Ravenna.
She was preceded in death by her husbands and two sisters, Helen Poston and Betty Matlock.
Charlotte Miller
LOUP CITY -- Charlotte Miller, 90, of Loup City died Friday, April 5, 2002, at the Rose Lane Nursing Home in Loup City.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the First Baptist Church in Loup City. The Rev. Del Unruh will officiate. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery in Loup City.
Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Monday at Higgins Funeral Home in Loup City.
Memorials are suggested to the Miller family.
Nelson Dearmont
81, World War II veteran
O'NEILL -- Nelson Dearmont, 81, of O'Neill, formerly of Burwell, died Thursday, April 4, 2002, at his ranch in Burwell.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the O'Neill Presbyterian Church and at 2 p.m. at the Burwell Baptist Church. The Rev. Dale Sallans will officiate. Burial will be in the Cottonwood cemetery in Burwell with military rites provided by American Legion Post 298 of Burwell.
Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday at Biglin's Mortuary in O'Neill.
Mr. Nelson was born Aug. 6, 1920, at Rae, Mo., to G.L. and Grace (Heck) Dearmont. He graduated from Burwell High School. He entered the U.S. Army on Dec. 7, 1942. He was a member of the 42nd Armored Division during World War II. He was a recipient of the Bronze Star.
He married
Mary Jo Clayton on July 10, 1960, in Ord. She died Oct. 24, 1987.
He married
Dorothy Graves on May 10, 1997, in O'Neill.
He was a lifetime member of the American Legion Post 298 and VFW. He served on the Co-op Board of Directors and as a 4-H leader.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy; three daughters and sons-in-law, Sandra and Fred Erpelding of Kearney, Nancy and Mark Suckstorf of Ainsworth and Tamzen and Chris Jenkins of Burwell; two stepdaughters, Diane O'Hern of Okoboji, Iowa, and Cheryl Mueller of Grand Island; two stepsons, Norman Graves of Omaha and Blaine Graves of O'Neill; two grandchildren; eight step grandchildren; three sisters, Helen Fischer and Ruby Percell, both of Burwell, and Ivy Everhart of Omaha; and three brothers, Alvin Dearmont of St. Paul, John Dearmont of Rose and Charles Dearmont of Elyria.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Jo; an infant son; a brother, Robert; and a sister, Viletha.
Allard Bushhousen
Allard A. Bushhousen, 72, of Grand Island died Wednesday, April 3, 2002, at the St. Francis Medical Center.
